2PUBLIC HEALTH HAPPENINGS
The mass media helps public health workers expand their audience reach ,
Crucial considering the fact that face-to-face channels of communicaon
oen require too many human resources and reach only a small number of
people in large, undeserved rural areas, It has to be Cost effecve and Mass
media provides an important link between the rural residents and vital
health informaon.
The mass media are diversified media that are intended to reach a large
audience by mass communicaon.
The media is important in any public health situaon. It serves the role of
being a source of correct informaon , an advocate for correct health
behaviors but before the media can take on that role, it needs to understand
factors causing ailments the issues surrounding it, policy and pracces, and
finally, recommended correct behavior. The local and internaonal media
play a vital role as the link between health workers and larger public. Health
authories educate and entrust the media with essenal health
informaon, which is then relayed to the public in readily accessible formats
through a variety of media channels.

The Internet Revoluon
As Internet access connues to expand, it will increasingly serve as a rich
health resource in environments that lack health experse. Regardless of
locaon, the Internet allows people to gain access to a wide array of health-
related informaon from worldwide at a mouse click. Internet revoluon
with widely available cellular and WiFi connecvity may even begin to serve
as a health informaon hub. Since the Internet transcends geographical
barriers, there is plenty of potenal for websites to provide a valuable source
of health informaon, thus enhancing health and well being for people in
developing countries.
Reliability of Health Informaon is a maer of concern. There should be a
control on flow of health informaon through some authenc organizaons
with focused working in the field of health.
In order to increase the number of children less than a year old receiving
vaccinaons in Manila, Philippines, radio and television broadcasts were
created because almost everybody ulized one or both media channels.
According to a study done later to determine the efficacy of the campaign,
using the radio and television “resulted in more children being vaccinated on
schedule…These results show that in places where people use mass media
regularly and vaccinaons are available, effecve radio and television spots
can increase vaccinaon rates and extend the reach of health workers.

This is very exciting world for Technology Users and Public Health Professionals - Ting Shih (mHealth Global Director - JSPH )
In the last couple of years, we have been working with
JSPH in community health Projects focusing diabetes
screening. Community health workers were trained to
work on mHealth tools going door to door and screen
paents in the community of Jodhpur for Diabetes.
Findings were that 1/3 of the populaon screened had rd
symptoms of diabetes and were unaware of the
situaon or were not managing their disease. Most of all
over 90% actually went to the doctor, got the follow up
care and the students also followed up with the paents
to make sure that they understand the way to take
medicaon and what else they can do to manage the
disease. We are looking forward for more such projects
to serve the community at Jodhpur. There are many career opportunies for Public Health
students / professionals especially the one who are apt
at using mobile and digital technologies. On the funder
side lies the UN, USAID and all these aid organizaons,
CDC and many more who are working on Public Health
on a global scale. They are looking for people who can
use mobile applicaon tools, who can look at data
through analycs. To satart acng on behalf of public
globally , looking at disease, catching them early, making
analycs on what intervenons work and help predict
future disease outbreaks and prevent them before they
even happen.
About: Founded an award-winning mHealth plaorm born
out of MIT to enable health organizaons to serve more

including the US, and serves 400,000+ paents. The
plaorm is used by health workers, nurses, pharmacists,
and physicians to capture paent symptoms and images via
mobile devices to receive treatment advice by remote
specialists. Ting was named Toyota Mother of Invenon in
2015.
Click Medix was recently honored amongst 50 women-led

Chronic Obstrucve Pulmonary Disease is a progressive disease
that affects the lungs, making it difficult to breathe. Umbrella
term used to describe progressive lung diseases which include:
Ÿ Emphysema
Ÿ Chronic bronchis
Ÿ Refractory (irreversible) asthma
Ÿ Severe Bronchiectasis
People at Risk are:
Ÿ People who smoke or are exposed to smoke
Ÿ People who have a family history of COPD are more likely to
develop the disease if they smoke
Ÿ Long-term exposure to other lung irritants also is a risk
factor for COPD
Ÿ Almost 90% of COPD deaths occur in low- and middle-
income countries, where effecve strategies for prevenon
and control are not always implemented or accessible.
It is characterized by a persistent blockage of airflow from the
lungs and under-diagnosed, life-threatening lung disease that
interferes with normal breathing and is not fully reversible.
Most cases of COPD occur as a result of long-term exposure to
lung irritants that damage the lungs and the airways. The most
common irritant that causes COPD is cigaree smoke. In rare
cases, a genec condion called alpha-1 antrypsin deficiency
may play a role in causing COPD. Due to its associaon with
smoking and increasing environmental polluon, the disease
burden is more in low or middle income countries.
Symptoms include Breathlessness, Abnormal sputum (a mix of
saliva and mucus in the airway) and a chronic cough. Daily
acvies can become very difficult as the condion gradually
worsens.
