Lesson 1- Review of Syllables, Prefixes and Suffixes
Syllable Rules
To determine how a long word sounds we simply determine where we can divide it intosmaller groups of sounds. There are three syllable rules to help us do this they are stated
below.
Syllable Rule #1:
When two consonants separate two vowel sounds, the first syllable usually ends after the
first consonant. For Example:
rab-bit fen-der sup-per
Syllable Rule #2:
When only one consonant separates two vowel sounds, the first syllable usually ends withthe first vowel sound.
For Example:
ma-gic hu-man ti-mid
Syllable Rule #3:
When a root word has a prefix or a suffix added to it, the prefix or suffix usually makes asyllable.
For Example:
re-place thank-ful
Divide these words into syllables following the rules.
garden ___________ parrot __________ unlock __________
lady ___________ barrel __________ balloon __________
return ___________ circus __________ slowly __________
paper ___________ rainy __________ open __________
nature ___________ kindness __________ ladder __________
