Lesson 1- Review of Syllables, Prefixes and Suffixes

Syllable Rules

To determine how a long word sounds we simply determine where we can divide it intosmaller groups of sounds. There are three syllable rules to help us do this they are stated

 below.

Syllable Rule #1:

When two consonants separate two vowel sounds, the first syllable usually ends after the

first consonant. For Example:

rab-bit fen-der sup-per

Syllable Rule #2:

When only one consonant separates two vowel sounds, the first syllable usually ends withthe first vowel sound.

For Example:

ma-gic hu-man ti-mid

Syllable Rule #3:

When a root word has a prefix or a suffix added to it, the prefix or suffix usually makes asyllable.

Lesson 3: Nouns and Pronouns

5. Collective Nouns

Collective nouns are not the same thing as plurals. A collective noun is a noun that

represents a large group, and the group is thought of as a singular item. A plural

noun is a noun that represents a large group, but the group is considered a

collection of individuals.

A collective noun is used with a singular verb: The class is ready.

A plural noun is used with a plural verb: The children are ready.

11. Present Tense

The Rule:  Most verbs end in s when used with the pronouns he, she, or it. Rewrite the

sentences below using the pronoun given as the subject and the s form of the verb.

1. The children swim in the pool.

12. Past Tense of Regular Verbs 

The Rule: Add d or ed to form the past tense of most regular verbs. For other regular

verbs, follow these rules:

1. If a word ends with a consonant + y, change the y to i and add ed. (worryworried)

2. If the word ends with a vowel + consonant, double the consonant and add ed.

(stop stopped)

13. Past Tense cont d

Some past tense verbs have a helping verb. Cross out the incorrect verb form and

underline the complete verb. The first one is done for you.

14. Other Forms of Active Verbs
