NIGHT VISITORJulie Stiefel catches an unusual glimpse of a rare winged guest.jpgmag.com/people/boxless

Have you ever seen the underside of a lunamoth before? Few have.

This rarely seen moth landed on mywindow last spring and I was able to capturethis extraordinarily beautiful perspective.

When a luna first emerges from itscocoon its wings are soft and crumpled, andit takes around 20 minutes for the wingsto unfurl. After theyve had some time todry, it opens them out completely and restsuntil nighttime. Once full dark arrives, themoth will fly away to find a mate during its

weeklong life span.We live on the side of a small mountainin rural New Jersey, just uphill from acreek, and are lucky to experience nature inthe way we do.

BURNING DOWN THE HOUSEKjell Harangen snaps a portrait of a fire crews finest.jpgmag.com/people/greymale

    10

What's wrong with this picture? It might look strange, but this was all part of an exercise

for the local fire corps. I took this photo in Hvittingfoss,Norway, about 10 miles south of Oslo. I was the fire chiefat that time and the people in the picture worked for me.The old house in the background had to be taken down tomake room for new buildings, so we took the opportunityto practice smoke-diving and a few other exercises. As wewere documenting what we were doing I had them pose infront of the burning house, which we all found very funny.

THE WORLDS TOUGHEST CYCLOCROSS RACEGeoff Waugh gets winded watching Yorkshire riderstackle difficult terrain. jpgmag.com/people/fireballxl5

Why would anybody climb on a bike

clearly not suited for the purpose andthen ride, run, walk, stumble, grovelfor 38 miles on a course that goes5,000 feet over north Yorkshires threehighest peaks?

That was the question I askedmyself as I stepped out of the car andsaw the first peak, Ingleborough. Itwas an unseasonably nice day out, soI could make out the summit. I hadwanted to shoot this race for a whileand was set to do so last year, butthe foot and mouth disease outbreakmeant it was canceled for the firsttime in its near-50-year history.

The race began after a hyperactive

14-year-old local school kid tookhis bike around the course, whichpreviously had been the sole domainof fell runners: hill runners withbearded faces, small shorts, and hugelungs! Now, the race is sold out waybefore it begins. This year 600 riderslined up to climb Ingleborough (2,373feet), Whernside (2,419 feet) and PenY Ghent (2,273 feet). Crazy fools. Mostof the racers seemed relatively happyat the staging point, sipping tea andexchanging greetings, talking abouttires and gear ratios. The chatterwould soon shift to a silence broken

by the odd grunt, heavy breathing, and

cussing as a rider hit some unseenrock in the long grass. Cyclocrossriders often have to trade places withtheir equipment, carrying the bikesover harsh terrain and remountingthem in one fluid motion. The racewas won by the favorite: a skinny blokecalled Rob Jebb. Not a bad cyclist, buta world class hill runner. He won forthe seventh time in a row, breaking thecourse record with a staggering timeof two hours, 52 minutes.

    I was beat just watching.

THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS?Steph Goralnick crosses pathswith a moving message.jpgmag.com/people/sgoralnick

Can a topsy-turvy bus change opinions ongovernment spending?

Ben of Ben & Jerrys Ice Cream seems tothink so. He commissioned this visual metaphorto draw attention to what he sees as completelyabsurd U.S. government spending habits andupside down budget priorities. He points outthat if just a fraction of the funds spent on ourmilitary arsenal were set aside, we could spendtens of billions more on schools and health care.

The bus was designed by Stefan Sagmeisterand built by artists Tom Kennedy and HaideenAnderson, who create some of the epic art carsfor Burning Man.

PROSPER, TEXASJ.R. Ball finds quiet and character justan hour from Dallas commotion.jpgmag.com/people/jonball82

After being exiled from Austin, J.R.unexpectedly found inspiration in thequiet towns and solitary landscape justoutside Dallas, Texashis childhoodhome. Here he tells us how beingalone in the Lone Star State hasprovided creative fodder for wholebands of artists, musicians, andoutlaws, and how he goes searchingfor that same spirit in his ownphotography.

    Where do you live?

Just down the road. Youll find it.

What brought you there? After a series of unforeseen events,I found myself saying goodbye to myadopted hometown of Austin, Texas. Iwas forced to relocate and move backin with my folks, who live in a smalltown about an hour north of Dallas.I saw leaving Austin as an artisticdeath sentence. Little did I know justhow much creative direction I wouldfind in the expanse of open fields anddilapidated barns of Prosper, Texas.

Describe your neighborhood.Take a drive through Prosper and theidea that a name so optimistic could beattached to a hamlet so forgotten, sobarren, so desolate, is comical. But afterspending some time here, you realizethat its not ironic at all that this place iscalled Prosper. It couldnt be more apt.And then it starts to feel like home. Youbegin to feel like its all there for you, yours to find and appreciate.

Well, I did. If its not for you, Dallas isalways just an hour south.
