Lakeside Lutheran Church continues with the sermon theme ‘A Walk Through the Bible’ during Holy Week. We have been journeying through the Bible, starting at Creation and we will end the series on Easter Sunday, April 12th. We have been looking at pivotal points of Biblical His-tory all the way through the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus. Dear Joyful Lakeside, May the joy of Easter wrap your heart in victory, comfort, and a deep love both for God and one anoth-er. When people connect with you I pray they see the joy of Jesus. March of 2020 will go into history as a unique time for all of humanity. Even with all the low spots there is a Good Friday and the resurrection of our Lord. Perhaps you have heard it said that Easter is just a nice coping device for people to make it through the hardships of life. So many people do not know or understand the spiritual transformation from being blind to the Gospel to seeing the Gospel with full recognition. Many people who look at the church do not grasp the concept of moving from death into eternal life. Many cannot see that moving from dark-ness into the light of Christ is an act of God’s mercy. We who live in the Easter resurrection see the sacrifice of Jesus. We are filled with joy because Easter fills us with faith, power, and steadfast love toward God and one another. The best part about it is that is shows. The great news is that this same Easter power flows from us into the lives of others. This is certainly a time for the church to be active in Jesus’ name. The people of Easter should be busier now that ever - connecting with people. We have all the ways and means to inspire people in the name of Jesus. Our job description has not changed at all.

Follow Jesus.

Seek to grow deeper in love with God through His word and sacrament.

Seek to inspire others in their faith walk with joy and your gifts.

Intentionally pray, care, and reach out to those who are confused, struggling or apart from God’s grace in Jesus.

In good times or hard times the mission and vision of the church does not change. We often respond the way the world does with complaints and anger. Easter people respond differently. How we live the mission changes often - but the mission itself does not.

I have good news of great joy: We have a savior who is Christ the Lord. Pastor Dahlke

Lakeside I’m here, you don’t know me. I am at church, I am in need. What shall this service help me to see? It’s you, it’s you, it’s You!

You sit near me, we say hello. You make me feel like I’m not alone. You sing to God, your faith is shown. It’s you, it’s you, it’s You!

I hear God’s Word, it’s spoken clear. I know that God is truly here. This is what I desire to be near. It’s you, it’s you, it’s You!

The service ends, what now to do? I look around – but then see you. You come near, I approach you too. It’s you, it’s you, it’s You!

You ask me where it is I’m from. You say you’re glad I chose to come. I leave this church, I’m not so glum? It’s you, it’s you, it’s You!

I wear a smile, I’ve seen God’s face. It happened in this holy place. In weeks to come we do embrace. I’ve met my God in you.

Discipleship and being sent! We heard about the Vision for Lakeside “Joyful Christians who inspire spiritual Growth and Discipleship”.

Today I’d like to talk about Discipleship and what it means “To be sent”. In talking with several people over the years, the words “Discipleship” and “Sending or Sent” seem like daunting expectations. They imply a special skill set, beyond the capability of most of us. We have an image of “Jesus” or “Paul”, or “Billy Graham”, which leaves us off the send list.

The real truth about these terms are found in God’s word and in Jesus’ life here on earth, in particular. A dis-ciple is simply a person who is a devoted follower of his teacher. One who is passionate enough to pass on the teachings on to others.

As joyful Christians we are devoted followers of Jesus Christ. As such, we “Love God with all our hearts” --- and we “Love our neighbors as ourselves”. We become committed to passing the Gospel (The good news about Jesus) onto others.

When we look at the man part of Jesus, we see a man who was obedient to God, He completely trusted God, He sought God’s will in all He did, and He served His fellow man even to the point of giving up His life for us. In John 3:16 we read that; “God so loved the world that He Sent (there’s that word sent), His one and only son that whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life”. Jesus as a man was not a sophisti-cated theologian or scholar. He was born of a lowly maiden, grew up in a normal household, followed the custom of the day and learned to be a carpenter just like His earthy father. As a man, He attended the syna-gogue and grew in knowledge and faith. He didn’t go to college, He was like many of us ….. knowledgeable in his Jewish faith, struggling in a secular society, obedient to God and doing what was right.

When Jesus began His ministry, He sought God’s guidance and called ordinary men to be His disciples. Fisher-men, a tax collector, etc not the Rabis or religious leaders. He taught and demonstrated the truth about God. He them sent them as His disciples (His students), to spread His message of Love, Hope, and Redemption throughout the region.

After Jesus died and was raised from the dead, He sent the Holy Spirit to help people in their faith walk and to provide them with the wisdom and strength to spread the Gospel Message. As a result, our sinful nature died with Him, we were forgiven of all our sins and were promised eternal life. Before Jesus rose from the dead, He left with the command that, “we make disciples of all nations”. He did not limit this to Rabis, theo-logians, and the well-educated. No, He sent all believers, that includes you and me. We call this Multiplying Disciples, a term we will all become more familiar with in our spiritual walk here at Lakeside.

So for us Lakeside Christians, as “Joyful Christians” we are being sent to pass on the “Good News” to others. We do this by drawing strength from the Holy Spirit and interacting in a loving way with each other, our spouses, our children and grandchildren, our siblings, our friends, our coworkers, fellow Christians and the strangers we meet.

For God uses us to introduce and show Jesus to other people. They see Him through us: how we speak, how we think, how we act, and how we spend our time, talent, and treasure. In other words, we as joyful Chris-tians become Christlike: Helpful, kind, caring, generous, forgiving, supportive, and encouraging etc. We can offer a prayer, a hug, a handshake, a gift, a word of encouragement, forgiveness, some of our time etc. So let us go forth as Joyful Christians reflecting the image of Jesus, thereby glorifying Him. I encourage you all to get involved as Bob Thompson urged as the Lakeside vision unfolds.

Finally, I also ask that as Joyful Christians you all prayerfully consider your stewardship commitments for 2020. Historically we have seen just under 30% of the commitments returned. Let us try and return 90%. This is a commitment between you and God. Lakeside as one of God’s missions uses this information to help guide our overall kingdom work.
