STAND WITH US—BECOME A PARTNER TODAY!BECOME A PARTNER TODAY!

IN INDIA AND ALL AROUND THE WORLD

YOU MAKE ADIFFERENCE

I never had any doubt that the ministry was doing what it said it would do. But seeing the pro-grams gave me a greater passion I could have never expected.

I was amazed at how little food it took to feed so many children at the feeding program in Ghatkesar. Or that something as basic as free medical care

in Kolkata could reach to the hearts of so many. I partner to help meet people’s needs, but ultimately it’s about leading them to Christ. And that’s what I witnessed in India.

Become a partner today. Not only will you be able to change the lives of others, it will absolutely change your life too!

Shawn, a partner from Allentown, PA, had the opportunity to witness some of the outreaches her partnership is making possible in India.

I wrote Battle eld of the Mind sixteen years ago, and it has been my most popular book. Why do you think that is? I believe it’s because most people can relate to it so well.

I wrote that book as a result of my journey through some serious issues in my own life. But even though the details may be different, we all go through similar trials. And we all need to realize that a lot of our problems—and their solutions—start in our mind.

You see, the condition of my marriage and family and basically, my whole life was partly the outcome of the way I

had been thinking—my “wilderness mentality.” But thankfully, God guided me through my wilder-ness. The main thing I needed to understand during that time was

that I would never change

DEARFRIENDS,

STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART

my life until I changed my mind! And that’s when I began to gain and maintain victory.

With the help of the Holy Spirit, I fought the battle in my mind and learned to take control of my thoughts and attitudes. It wasn’t easy—but it was well worth the ght! In place of anger, fear and all kinds of turmoil, I now have peace, con dence and ful llment in my life.

In my article A New Way to Think (page 18), let’s re ect a little more on what may possibly be the greatest ght any of us will ever face. Like I said, it may not be easy, but I believe when we recognize and understand the power of our thoughts, half the battle is already won. We can win this ght!

Change your mind and change your life.

Five Must-Have Ingredients

B Y D R . J O H N C . M A X W E L L

GROWING AS A LEADER

AAs any farmer knows, the growth of a crop only happens when the right ingredients are present. To harvest plentiful elds, the farmer has to begin by planting the right seed in rich topsoil where sunlight and water can help the seed sprout, mature and bear fruit. If any of the ingredients (seeds, topsoil, sunlight or water) are missing, the crop won’t grow.

Growing as a leader also requires the proper ingredients. Unless the right attitudes and actions are cultivated, an aspiring leader will sputter and fail rather than grow in in uence. Let’s look at ve basic qualities essential for growth in leadership.

EEL.0311.6-7.indd 6 2/3/11 11:24 AM

The Ingredients Are…

1) Teachability Arrogance crowds out room for im-provement. That’s why humility is the starting point for personal growth. As Erwin G. Hall said, “An open mind is the beginning of self-discovery and growth. We can’t learn anything new until we can admit that we don’t already know everything.”

Adopting a beginner’s mindset helps you to be teachable. Beginners are aware that they don’t know it all, and they proceed accordingly. As a general rule, they’re open and humble, noticeably lacking in the rigidity that often accompanies experience and achievement. It’s easy enough to have a beginner’s mind when you’re actually a beginner, but maintaining teachability gets trickier in the long run especially when you’ve already achieved some degree of success.

2) Sacrifice Growth as a leader involves tem-porary loss. It may mean giving up familiar but limiting patterns, safe but unrewarding work, values no longer believed in, or relationships that have lost their meaning. Whatever the case, everything we gain in life comes as a result of sacrificing something else. We must give up to go up.

3) Security To keep learning throughout life, you have to be willing, no matter what your position is, to say, “I don’t know.” It can be hard for executives to admit lacking knowledge because they feel as if everyone is looking to them for direction, and they don’t want to let their people down. However, follow-ers aren’t searching for perfection in their leaders. They’re looking for an honest, authentic, and courageous leader who, regardless of the obstacles facing the organization, won’t rest until the problem is solved.

It took me seven years to hit my stride as a communicator. During those years I gave some boring speeches, and I felt discouraged at times. However, I was secure enough to keep taking the stage and honing my communication skills until I could connect with an audience. Had I been insecure, the negative evaluations of

others would have sealed my fate, and I never would have excelled in my career.

4) Listening Listen, learn, and ask questions from somebody successful who has gone before you. Borrow from their experi-ences so you can avoid their mistakes and emulate their triumphs. Solicit feedback and take to heart what you’re told. The criticism of friends may seem bitter but, when heeded, it can save you from falling victim to your blind spots.

5) Application Knowledge has a limited shelf life. Unless used immediately or carefully preserved, it spoils and becomes worthless. Put the lessons you learn into practice so your insights mature into understanding.

Higher and Higher These ingredients are crucial for anyone who is serious about their own personal growth and leadership development. I encourage you to culti-vate these five traits in your life. Tend to them daily. Be patient. One day, you will suddenly notice your leadership abilities have grown like a mighty oak tree that’s been nurtured with water, sunlight and tender-loving care.

“ Put the lessons you learn into practice so your insights mature into understanding.”

DDo you like to get promoted? Most of us do. We want to grow as individuals. We want our businesses to grow. We want our ministries to grow. There’s nothing wrong with wanting promotion. But sometimes we fail certain tests in certain areas that keep us from getting promoted.

Areas like forgiveness.

If someone has hurt you, don’t spend the next ten years of your life hurting yourself by hanging on to the offense. Most likely, that other person isn’t even thinking about you, while you dwell on the incident for years. That only hurts one person—you.

You see, when you forgive someone, you are helping yourself.

Now, I want you to not only understand the importance of forgiveness, but I’ve also put together six ways to detect unforgiveness in your own heart. If you’ll use these six points of reference, areas of unforgiveness lingering in you will be exposed—and you’ll be one step closer to your personal promotion from God.

Here Are Six Ways to Find It and Remove It

1). Unforgiveness always keeps score. In Luke 15:29, the elder brother of the prodigal son said, “Look! These many years I have served you.” Peter wanted to know how many times he had to forgive someone. Unforgiveness is always looking at the score. But 1 Corinthians 13:5 says, Love takes no account…. It doesn’t count up the evil done to it.

Back in the early days of our marriage, when Dave and I were fussing and fuming at each other, I would bring up stuff that happened years before and Dave would say, “Where do you keep all that stuff?” Well, I had a place, and it was all in there eating at me. And every new thing Dave did wrong, I would add to this list, and it kept growing until it became a bitter giant in my heart.

2). Unforgiveness always boasts of its own record. In Luke 15:29, the older brother of the prodigal son says, “These many years I have never done wrong.” Judgment always says that I always do good and others do bad. An unforgiving spirit keeps us out of the Father’s house.

3). Unforgiveness always complains. “You never do anything for me.” Ever catch yourself thinking that about someone? This attitude only sees what others aren’t doing and doesn’t see what they are doing. God’s Word clearly shows that He does not like complaining. And if you’re continuously using your mouth to complain about some incident of offense, you won’t get past it. Don’t waste time by complaining.

4). Unforgiveness has a martyr syndrome. “I do all the work.” Workaholics are particularly suscep-tible to this one. Sometimes people who work all the time and don’t know how to enjoy their life get jealous when other people are enjoying life. Is there someone who aggravates you when you see them having a good time? If yes, you could have unforgiveness toward them.

5). Unforgiveness always alienates, divides and separates. When the kids are acting up, we say “my husband’s kids” or maybe something like, “What are you going to do about your son?” Those are divisive statements. Maybe you have a coworker who you stay away from as much as

possible or a sibling you don’t talk to much. Why do you keep yourself separated from them? Maybe you need to forgive that person.

6). Unforgiveness is always envious and jealous when angry at someone who gets blessed. If someone who has hurt you gets a blessing, it grates on you…at least it did for me until I learned how to forgive. Forgiveness is a decision—not a feeling.

When you pray for people who have hurt you, it’s a choice. But there’s healing in that for you. Bless and do not curse them means to speak well and not evil of them when that person is not around. And be good to them in various ways as wisdom allows.

Improve Your LifeI want to encourage you today to make a decision to start living a lifestyle of forgiveness and refuse to be offended.

A forgiving lifestyle helps you become more like Christ. As you learn the importance of forgiveness and begin to prac-tice forgiving others, your heart will heal from bitterness, and your personal growth will lead you to the promotions God has planned for you.

“ When you forgive someone, you are helping yourself.”

Visions of PovertyEvery year we have the privilege of witnessing the powerful impact the partners of Joyce Meyer Ministries are making around the world. But we’ve also witnessed unbelievable poverty. In Haiti, where the conditions were already the worst in the Western Hemisphere, a life-shattering earthquake on January 12, 2010, left millions in danger of disease and starvation.

We witnessed Haiti’s busy streets lined with tents…one after the other. More than a million homeless. Speechless, we watched a young mother wash her naked baby in the storm runoff along those very medians. But when you have nothing else to wash with, what do you do?

We saw the same thing during our Festival of Life in India in October 2010. Small spouts along the sides of the roads were the source of bathwater for many. And in another part of Kolkata, hundreds of men and women bathe, brush their teeth, and perform worship rituals in the “sacred” Hooghly River. Stairs that lead down to the river—called ghats—are seemingly treated as an open

toilet. In a November 2009 article of The Times of India, the writer says of the Hooghly, “The pan-oramic view of the Howrah Bridge, as it stretches across the Hooghly, is lost in the stench from the filth and grime that numbs the senses.”1

When we encounter this type of poverty, our hearts break. Especially when we realize that there is so much more we haven’t even seen. Yes, there is incredible beauty and joy found in Haiti and India, but poverty is ripping apart individu-als, families and communities. With conditions like these and the overwhelming need to feed, clothe, care for, rescue and treat, you might wonder if there is any answer to poverty.

partnershipWHERE POVERTY & POSSIBILITIES MEET

Poverty. The word alone doesn’t do it justice. Once you see it with your own eyes a part of you begins to understand what it can really do. But it also ignites a spark in your spirit calling you to something greater…doing more to help those in need.

Why Partnership WorksIt’s a simple concept really. One person can make a dif-ference on their own, but can never do as much as 2 or 3 or 10…or 10,000 can do. That’s partnership. God actually designed us to work that way. Ephesians 4:16 says, From him the whole body, joined and held together by every sup-porting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work (NIV).

It’s amazing what can happen when people come together in partnership to meet a need. It opens the door for God to reach beyond those dire physical needs straight to the person’s heart. That’s why we share their stories with you, hoping to give you a glimpse into the lives saved and restored by God through your partnership.

Recently a few partners traveled with us to India to witness these stories firsthand. Here’s what some of them had to say…

Shawn; Allentown, PA“What I do doesn’t seem like enough. These people are hungry and thirsty and need food and water. That’s something I take for granted. Water and food are such basic needs. Seeing these programs makes me want to go home and get everyone I know involved. Joyce Meyer Ministries has more than 300 feeding programs, but we need a million more.”

John; Austin, TX“Being in India and seeing what these people go through shows me just how big of a bubble I actually live in. If everyone could see what is happening here for even just one minute, they’d want to be a part.”

Georgia; Austin, TX“I got to pray with a little girl who’s eight years old and was in the hospital with AIDS. She’s only two years younger than me. Getting to pray with her showed me that God can do anything. I want to go home and get my friends together to make jewelry to sell so we can help even more kids who need it.”

Tiffany; Los Angeles, CA“What amazes me so much is the joy you see on the people’s faces at the outreaches. They’re people just like you and me—they just need some extra help. I came here just to serve, but seeing it with my own eyes made me want to give more regularly. I thought I had to give a huge amount every time, but what I’ve found is that every little bit helps.”

There’s no way to fully understand just how powerful partnership truly is, but what we’ve encoun-tered time and time again is it really does work. Lives are being changed, futures redefined and Christ’s love is spreading to the ends of the earth. Suddenly, what once looked like hopeless poverty is turning into something com-pletely new…

… We believe there is…partnership

Endless Possibilities Possibilities. In Matthew 19:26, we can see Jesus’ heart about possibilities. He says, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” How great is that? With God ALL things are possible. That means no matter how overwhelming the poverty may appear, God is using things like partnership to create possibilities where there are seemingly none.

We see these possibilities when we meet little girls like Sruthie—full of joy when her circumstances say otherwise. Her family is extremely poor. Without the feeding program in Ghatkesar, India, she wouldn’t be able to eat. But every time someone gives, projects like this continue to be possible. Sruthie is not only receiving a meal, she’s learning about the beautiful promises found in the Bible. Something we know she’ll take home to her Hindu family. At just five years old, she has an endless amount of possibilities in front of her.

What Can We Do?It’s true that poverty and hopelessness can seem over-whelming when we encounter it. There’s so much need in the world. But know that all around the world your partnership is doing something amazing. It’s slowly but surely rescuing people out of desperate situations and restoring their hope.

Every time a child licks his plate clean, a little girl gets tucked in at night, a nail is hammered into a new home, or a heart is opened to the Word of God, partnership wins and poverty is forced to take a step back.

This one scripture alone lets us know how important it is to think properly. Thoughts are powerful, and according to the writer of the book of Proverbs, they have creative ability. You cannot have a positive life and a negative mind.

Maybe you’ve spent years thinking wrong thoughts based on a warped, dysfunctional past, but that can change today.

I spent a lot of years unhappy because the minute I woke up in the morning I started thinking negative, sad, depressing things. Now I can truly say I am fully satis ed since the Holy Spirit has helped me operate out of the mind of Christ (the mind of the Spirit) that is within me.

If you struggle with negative think-ing, it’s important for you to come to grips with the fact that your life won’t change until your thinking does.

Renewed, God-like thinking is vital to a successful Christian life.

The Bible says that God loves us, but think how many of God’s children struggle to believe it. I have learned that if we never meditate on God’s Word, we will never experience the depth of His love for us.

The love of God is meant to be a powerful force in our lives, one that will take us through even the most dif cult trials into victory.

Just as our physical lives are depen-dent on good health and nutrition, our minds are dependent on God’s Word and positive thinking—and we need to choose our thoughts carefully.

THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU’RE THINKING ABOUTThe Bible presents a lot of detailed instruction on what kinds of things we should think about. Philippians 4:8 alone tells us to think about what is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, honest and worthy of praise. We’re to think about things that build us up, not tear us down.

If you’re a believer, you probably think some Scripture-based thoughts throughout each day, but think about this. Are you mixing them with negative thoughts or just any random thoughts that come into your mind?

For most of my life, I didn’t think about what I was thinking about. I simply thought whatever fell into my head. I had no revelation that Satan could inject thoughts into my mind. Much of what was in my head was either lies Satan was telling me or just plain nonsense. The devil was controlling my life because he was controlling my thoughts.

It is tremendously uplifting to think on the goodness of God and all the marvelous works of His hands.

Mark 4:24 says, …Be careful what you are hearing. The measure [of thought

I’ve been studying the mind for a long time and one of the most life-changing scriptures I’ve found is Proverbs 23:7, For as he thinks in his heart, so is he….

and study] you give [to the truth you hear] will be the measure [of virtue and knowledge] that comes back to you—and more [besides] will be given to you who hear.

What a great scripture! It tells us the more time we spend thinking about the Word, the more power and ability we will have to walk in it. It also says the more we read and listen to the Word, the more revelation knowledge we will receive to understand it.

In the esh we are lazy and want to receive from God without any effort on our own part, but that’s not the way it works. A person will only get out of the Word what he is willing to put into it.

I encourage you to make a decision to medi-tate on God’s Word every day because every moment you spend absorbing it, the more virtue and knowledge you will receive from God.

PREPARE TO BE RENEWED LITTLE BY LITTLEThe renewing of your mind will take place little by little, so don’t be discouraged if progress seems slow.

Just before the Israelites entered the Promised Land, the Lord told them He would drive out their enemies before them little by little (see Deuteronomy 7:22). In the same way, we’re given freedom slowly—little by little—which keeps us from boasting about our own abili-ties, which we’re sometimes tempted to do.

It is actually better to be set free in one area at a time. That way, we appreciate our freedom more; we realize it is truly a gift from God and not something we can make happen in our own strength.

The devil will try his hardest to stop you during the process of renewing your mind. He knows that once you have the ability to discern his lies from the truth of God’s Word, he’s lost his ability to control your thoughts. So he will attempt to stop you through discouragement and condemnation. But there is a scripture that can help you with that too.

Romans 8:1 says, Therefore, [there is] now no condemnation…for those who are in Christ Jesus….

Don’t criticize yourself when you have setbacks or bad days. Just get back up, dust yourself off and start again.

I repeat: Don’t criticize yourself. Your com-plete victory will come, but it will take time because it will come just as the Bible says, “little by little.” In the meantime, instead of thinking negatively, think like this: I refuse to be discouraged. I refuse to be condemned. Father, the Bible says You don’t condemn me for my sins but that You sent Jesus to redeem me from them. I’ll be ne and today will be a great day. Help me choose my thoughts today.

There is victory in having a cheerful, positive, God-like attitude.

YOU HAVE THE POWER TO BE POSITIVESome people are afraid to be positive or hopeful because they’ve been hurt so much in life. They don’t think they can face the pain of disappointment yet again, so they do their best to protect themselves from being hurt by refusing to hope or believe that good things can happen for them. That is a lie that Satan desperately wants you to believe.

Remember Proverbs 23:7: For as he thinks in his heart, so is he….

When I really began to study the Word and trust God to renew my mind, one of the rst things I realized was that my fear of hope had to go. The pathway to freedom begins when we face the problem without making excuses for it.

Second Corinthians 5:17 says, If any person is [ingrafted] in Christ (the Messiah) he is a new cre-ation (a new creature altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition] has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come!

As “a new creation,” you don’t have to allow the old things that happened to you to keep affecting your new life in Christ. You’re a new creature and you can have your mind renewed according to the Word of God. Good things are going to happen to you!

Hebrews 6:19 tells us that hope is the anchor of the soul. Hope is the force that keeps us steady in a time of trial. Don’t ever stop hoping. Don’t ever be afraid.

I can’t promise you that things will always turn out exactly the way you want them to. I can’t promise you that you’ll never be disappointed again. But, even in disappointing times, if they do come, you can hope and be positive.

No matter how negative your thoughts are or how long they’ve been that way, I know you can change because I did. It took time and “heaping helpings” of the Holy Spirit, but it was worth it. It will be worth it for you too. Whatever happens, trust in the Lord—and be positive!

1. Be Wise Think about what you’re doing, why you’re doing it, and what the result will be. We can win over temptation by being wise—using common sense.

For example, if you spend more money than you make, you’re going to have financial problems. If you eat more calories than you burn off, you’re going to gain weight.

Proverbs 5:1,2 says, My son, be attentive to my Wisdom [godly Wisdom learned by actual and costly experi-ence], and incline your ear to my understanding [of what is becoming and prudent for you], That you may exercise proper discrimination and discretion and your lips may guard and keep knowledge and the wise answer [to temptation].

Temptations will come. You need to be ready with a wise answer.

2. Believe That You Can Resist Temptation Many people know where they struggle but automatically think, Well, I always give in to that one. It’s a lost cause. People say things like, “I can’t just eat one cookie; I have to eat a dozen.”

I don’t mean to be rude, but that’s silly. If you’re a Christian, think about this: You’re born again, baptized in the Holy Ghost, full of the God who created the universe, and you’re telling me that a cookie is bossing you around?

Your words are so important. Stop saying “I can’t” all the time.

Start believing that you CAN resist temptation. First Corinthians 10:13 says, For NO[emphasis mine] tempta-tion (no trial regarded as something that would entice us to sin, [no matter how it comes or where it leads] has overtaken you and laid hold on you that is not common to man….

by Joyce Meyer

Temptation is an unavoidable part

of life. It’s not a matter of will you get tempted, but when. Jesus, in His model

prayer (we call it the Lord’s Prayer) tells us plainly to pray, “lead us not into temptation.” He didn’t ask not to

be tempted, so I encourage you to stop praying that, if you are, because it’s a waste of prayer time.

Areas of Weakness This is why it’s important to pray about possible temptations ahead of time. We all have weaknesses. One of mine happens to be impatience. Although I’ve made progress, if the enemy is able to push the right buttons, I struggle with impatience, so I ask God for help in this area.

For you, it could be the temptation to get angry easily. Or maybe to control the people in your life. Or gossip. It could be some type of addiction.

Maybe you’re tempted to rescue everybody, including those who don’t want to be rescued. The list of temptations is long indeed.

That’s why I want to share with you five ways I’ve learned, over the years of my walk with God,

to resist temptation.

3. Be PreparedOne of the best ways to be prepared to resist temptation is to spend time with God. Study scriptures on temptation. Meditate on them. You can’t just read

this article one time and expect to be changed, you need to review this teaching. Get the CDs, take notes and then have a meeting with yourself. And don’t be afraid to ask yourself some tough questions.

4. Avoid the Scenes of TemptationWho do you hang out with? Who do you listen to? This is extremely important, because what you watch, listen to, and read has a big effect on your life. If you’re a man who is tempted by pornography, you need to avoid the people, places and programs that set you up to fall in this area.

Now, I’m not saying that we need to be religious prudes who put blinders on like the Pharisees. But we do need to be careful about who we spend time with and how we spend our time.

5. You Can’t Trust Yourself Too MuchOut of the ve, this is the most important. Many times, people have problems with temptation because they lean on themselves instead of God.

The apostle Paul asks, “Do you really think that after receiving the Holy Spirit through the grace and mercy of God that you’re now going to reach perfection by dependence on the esh?” (See Galatians 3:3)

You cannot change yourself alone. If you nish reading this and say, “OK. I’m going to change this,” you’re already setting yourself up for failure. Instead, you need to say, “God, I’m going to start praying about my struggle with temptation. I’m going to study this area, and God, I need You to help me because I can’t do it without You.”

With God, All Things Are PossibleGod wants to help you overcome temptation. You just need to ask Him for help and allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life. Remember, tempta-tion is going to cross your path again. But with Christ, you can resist it and live in victory.

DO YOUR CHOICES OFTEN

“come back to bite you?” Since the Garden of Eden, that old snake the devil has been using temptations to get people side-tracked and in trouble.

Do you struggle with temptation? We all get tempted, but the Bible says you can resist any and every temptation that crosses your path. Addictions, anger, gossiping—there are too many temptations to count. You have the power to stay one step ahead of the devil and defeat temptation.

So what is it with men, anyway? Why do we love to blow stuff up? How in the world did we come up with hockey, paint ball, cage ghts, demoli-tion derbies? Why do little boys want to wear Spider-man pajamas? Why do young men want cars that are fast and loud? What is it with the whole sports thing? These are not comic embarrassments to otherwise sane and healthy men. They are profound clues into the masculine soul.

Right there in Genesis chapter one, right at the beginning of our story, God announces that He’s going to set His image on the earth. Notice how He does it: So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them (Genesis 1:27).

What Men Really Need Out of LifeOne of the secrets to understanding men is this: A man wants to feel powerful.

Every boy and man are basically looking for the answer to one question: “Do I have what it takes?” This fuels a man’s search for success, victory and validation. It also explains his worst fear: Failure. Because failure feels like the verdict on him, the nal sentence on his life. He is not a man. He doesn’t have what it takes.

Women don’t fear failure nearly as much as they fear rejec-tion and abandonment. Because every little girl and every woman is searching for answers to a different question: “Will anyone choose me? Am I worth ghting for? Am I beautiful?”

Notice how differently men and women typically look at money. When a husband and wife sit down to pay the bills, emotions can run high. Because for him, money is an issue of success or failure. But for her, money is an issue of security.

The more we accept these differences as good and God-given, the more we will understand the men and women in our lives, and how we can better love one another. Tell a man he’s got what it takes. Tell a woman she’s worth ghting for.

“Deep in our souls we bear the image of God – either as men or as women.”

Male and female He created them. God doesn’t just make “people.” He makes men or women. Our gender is one of our greatest gifts from God. It is one of the deepest ways we bear His image. Male, or female.

What Makes Men and Women Unique? Our world is deeply confused about gender, and many people would very much like to believe that society created all differences between men and women. I wonder if these folks have ever been parents. Little boys and little girls are so different.

Just last week, I pulled up to my buddy’s house to give him a ride to work. He has a little boy of six and a precious girl of three. The boy was hiding behind the bushes, armed with water balloons. As soon as I pulled up, he began his attack. This is so true to boyhood. Little boys play games of battle. They want to be Jedi knights. They want to be heroes.

My friend’s daughter also had water balloons, but she had nestled hers in the grass and covered them with blankets. They were her “babies.” She wanted to protect and nurture them. This is so true to little girls. Little boys don’t have tea parties. They don’t call friends and chat for hours on the phone. They don’t play dress up or wedding day. Deep in our souls we bear the image of God – either as men or as women.

Now, I am not casting men and women in rigid categories. Of course a woman needs to be brave and a man needs to be tender. Some boys prefer to read books and some girls love to climb trees. But the scripture makes it clear that male and female are different, and you can see these differences every day of your life. I’m not ever going to get a pedicure. Stasi, my wife, is never going to go bow hunting.

I believe men are a picture of God’s strength. Not big muscles, but courage and bravery and a willingness to lay your life down for others. Women bear God’s image in their mercy and tenderness, in their erce devotion and uncon-ditional love. When the boys want to jump off the roof, who do they ask—Mom or Dad? Dad, of course. He’s okay with danger. But when they get hurt, who do they

In this issue, we’re talking about how to fi ght the battles in our mind. Read these verses and answer the questions below.

A CLOSER LOOK: THE MIND

[Satan] does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him...for he is a liar [himself] and the father of lies and of all that is false.

JOHN 8:44 (AMP)

I’m absolutely convinced that nothing—nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable—absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us.ROMANS 8:38,39 (MSG)

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.PROVERBS 23:7 (AMP)

1. It is important to establish the understanding that Satan is a liar. He infl uences our thought life. So, whenever we are thinking negative, accusing, self-abusive thoughts, we need to determine whether they are coming from him. List some of your thoughts that may have been infl uenced by the enemy.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2. We also need to know (and not doubt) how God feels about us at all times. Think about past issues in your life. With Romans 8:38,39 in mind, how did your thoughts affect your circumstances? What is the most important thing to remember in present or future situations?

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

3.What we think makes a great impression on our life. Can you see how your thoughts have helped shape your life? How can your thoughts help shape your future?

SSacri ce is an idea you seldom hear about today. Yet, it’s a major reason why the United States of America became a free and prosperous nation. America was founded on sacri ce.

Sacri ce means “a surrender of something of value as a means of gaining something more desirable or of preventing some evil.”1 In other words, sometimes we must put aside our own immediate desires and comforts in the present moment in order to gain something more valuable down the road.

And sacri ce involves risk. Sometimes those who sacri ce never regain what they gave up. Some don’t see the results that later generations see. And the risk might include the ultimate sacri ce—giving one’s life for the cause.

That’s exactly what our Founding Fathers did. Many Americans today don’t realize the extent of our Founders’ sacri ce. The Revolutionary War was more than an inconvenience—many of the Founders lost everything they owned, including their lives.

All of the fty-six men who signed the Declaration of Independence made sacri ces. Here are some examples:

CARTER BRAXTON of Virginia was a prosperous planter and trader. His ships were destroyed by the British Navy. He lost his home to pay off the debts and died in poverty.

THOMAS LYNCH, JR., an aristocratic plantation owner, risked his substan-tial fortune by signing the Declaration. His health rapidly declined afterwards, and his ship was lost at sea on his way to Europe to recover. No one knows what happened to him.

THOMAS MCKEAN of Delaware was harassed mercilessly. His family went into hiding during the war, moving ve times. He served in Congress without pay and died in poverty.

AMERICA AT ITS BEST SACRIFICE

Enemies and looters ransacked the properties of Bartlett, Ellery, Clymer, Hall, Gwinner, Walton, Heyward, Rutledge and Middleton; the latter four were caught and thrown in prison.

THOMAS NELSON, JR. of Virigina put his own home up as collateral to raise $2 million for the French allies. The struggling French government was unable to pay back the loans and Nelson’s entire estate was wiped out.

The British also seized the home of FRANCIS HOPKINSON of New Jersey and occupied the home of William Floyd of New York.

FRANCIS LEWIS lost his home and everything in it and his wife was put in prison. Her treatment was so brutal that she died from it.

JUDGE RICHARD STOCKTON was taken from his bed in the dead of night and beaten by British soldiers, followed by jail and starvation. His home and all of his possessions were destroyed, forcing him and his family to live off of charity.

JOHN HART had to leave his dying wife’s bedside and his thirteen children ran off in various directions to ee the British. For more than a year, he lived in caves and

forests. He returned home to nd his wife dead, his chil-dren missing and all of his property gone. He died shortly after of exhaustion and a broken heart.

LEWIS MORRIS AND PHILIP LIVINGSTON died of similar circumstances to Hart’s.

Five of the fty-six were captured by the British and tortured. Twelve lost their homes through looting, con- scation or burning to the ground. Seventeen lost their fortunes. Two lost sons in the military while another’s two sons were captured. And nine lost their lives.2

The sacri ce that was made by these fty-six brave men and countless others to both establish and maintain our liberty has given us the privilege of living in freedom since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. But

in recent years, we have forgotten the price that has been paid and the ability to maintain our freedom has been lost due to our unawareness of our history. If we will once again learn this history, which teaches these guidelines, we will then return to the freedom that our forefathers sacri ced so greatly for us to have.

Jesus said, Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13 NIV). Jesus Christ is the best example of sacri ce, considering what He endured for us.

As Christians, and as Americans, our hearts must be willing to make relevant sacri ces for others that help preserve, protect and defend our nation.

What sacri ces are you willing to make?

This book takes you on an exciting adventure showing what made America a great country, what forces are tearing it apart, and what we must do to recapture God’s purpose for America.

GOOD NEWS

AROUND THE WORLDPRAY FOR OUR EASTERN EUROPEAN TRIP!

Joyce will be traveling to eastern Europe in June, sharing messages in the following cities.*

• Warsaw, Poland – June 11 • Hamburg, Germany – June 12 • Tirana, Albania – June 17 • Sofi a, Bulgaria – June 18

To learn more about this exciting trip, visit joycemeyer.org/europe2011. *Schedule is subject to change.

As you prepare for the most joyous day of the Christian calendar, take time to study the last days of Jesus’ life—and the miracle of His resurrection. He is risen!

PALM SUNDAY Jesus entered Jerusalem riding a donkey colt. The people waved palm branches and shouted, “Hosanna! Blessed is He Who comes in the name of the Lord!” (see John 12:13).

MONDAY Jesus over-turned the money changers’ tables at the temple (see Luke 19:46).

TUESDAY Jesus taught the greatest commandments: “Love the Lord your God

with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” and “Love your neighbor as yourself” (see Mark 12:30,31 NIV).

WEDNESDAY A woman poured expensive perfume over Jesus’ feet and wiped them dry with her hair. Jesus said, “She has done a good and beautiful thing” (see Mark 14:6,7).

THURSDAY During the Last Supper, Jesus served His disciples bread and wine saying, “Take. Eat. This is My body….” and “This is My blood [which rati es] the new covenant… which is being poured out for (on account of) many” (Mark 14:22, 24).

FRIDAY Jesus was tried and cruci ed. The rst day.

SATURDAY The disciples mourned over Jesus’ death. The second day.

RESURRECTION SUNDAY The women visited Jesus’ tomb on the third day to nd the stone rolled away. Jesus later appeared to His disciples, assigning them the Great Commission. He was then taken up into heaven to sit at the right hand of God. (See Mark 16.)

I am the resurrection and the life…. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die….—John 11:25,26 (NLT)

READ ALERT! II’ll never forget the experience of

being red. I was thirty-six years old, with a wife and two small children. After telling my wife, Kathleen, we sat on the bed, cried a little, and realized there was no way out. But looking back today, I can see the jolt of that experience was the best thing that could have ever happened. Shortly afterward, we began the greatest journey of change we had ever experienced, because I had hit a wall. I had no other choice, and there was only one answer—change or die.

Perhaps you’ve hit your wall. Maybe you’ve been red, divorced, nancially ruined, hit bottom from substance abuse, been humiliated, experienced failure, or had a close call with death. If your life has been completely turned upside down and you’re at the end of your rope, then you have it easy.

That’s right—you have it easy!

I have discovered that the most dif- cult aspect of changing your life is beginning—taking the rst step. Most people rest on their laurels, take the easy way out, rationalize their options—anything—to keep from changing. If you’ve hit your wall and have no other options, then your decision is already made. You’ve decided and you’re on the way up!

II’ll never forget the experience of being red.

But if you haven’t quite hit bottom yet and been jolted into reality, the choice is going to be much tougher. Your arguments might include:

Sure I’m frustrated with my job, but at least it’s a paycheck, and a lot of people are out of work right now.

I’m not really drinking that much, and after all, I could quit just about any time.

Oh, I dreamed about a different life—a kid’s dream. It’s not really something that’s realistic for me to pursue now.

I could advance faster if I got my college degree, but I work all day, so why should I spend my evenings going to class?

I could go on and on. I don’t know your particular frustration, but I’m sure you have a million excuses for why you’ve never begun your journey to change. You haven’t hit your particular wall, so your life could easily go on for years, maybe your whole life, before you realize you’ve traded your dreams for a shallow, empty copy.

The truth is, as long as we see any other way out, very few of us will muster the will to make real change happen. But the good news is, hitting a wall can be your ticket to freedom because it forces you to change course and to do it now.

A friend thought he was doing ne until doctors discovered he had developed cancer of the esophagus. His treatment and recovery forced him to leave his business and literally took him out of everything for more than four years. Thinking his career was over, he nearly gave up. But hitting that wall jolted him, and the experience completely changed his perspective on life. As a result, he’s transformed his thinking about his purpose for living, and guess what? His cancer even went into remission and he’s back at work.

Whatever your wall—getting red, losing your home, receiving the medical diagnosis you’ve dreaded, closing your business, bankruptcy, divorce, whatever—it doesn’t have to be the end. As terrible as the wall may be, you can overcome it if you use the moment to jolt you back to reality.

You have to face the fact that circum-stances won’t change until you change. Family members won’t change until you change. Your job won’t change until you change. And your future will never change until you make a decision.

Embrace the wall. Focus your mind, then face the real truth about your situation. The big question is: Would you rather live with the pain of tough choices now or the pain of regret later?

3 MILLIONPEOPLE CAN’T BE WRONG

“In 2006, I suffered a painful af iction known as bipolar and severe depression. I wrote to you and was sent a beautiful book [Battle eld of the Mind] that helped me a lot. Jesus healed me completely from this sickness that doctors said was chronic, degenerative and incurable.”

—Diana; Bogota, Colombia

“Battle eld of the Mind changed my life. I was led to your book and read a chapter each day. It set me free from negative thinking. And now, by the power of the Holy Spirit, God’s Word, and a clean mind—I am enjoying everyday life! ”

—Catherine; Randolph, NJ

“I was having a hard time keeping my mind on the Lord, so I went to Wal-Mart to get an inspirational book. I walked to the book aisle and there was Battle eld of the Mind. I knew the Lord had sent me there to get your book. I hated reading but I started and kept reading for

hours. It was exactly what I needed. It helped me stop my ‘stinking thinking.’ ”

—Viki; Henderson, TX

“A few months ago, my husband bought me the book Battle eld of the Mind. Honestly, it just sat there for at least two months. Later, I decided to read a few pages of the book until I found something else. I was dumbfounded—in a good way. It was not at all what I expected. ”

—Sandy; Lexington, MI

“As I read the book, it was like a lightbulb went off. I began to understand my attitude and why it was dif cult for me to change, and also my dad and other people. I began practicing the teaching in the book, and experienced a change in my attitude. I started choosing right thoughts…now my life is very different and I’ve come a long way. ”

security that brought me rest. In an even greater way, our heavenly Father wants you and me to feel safe, secure and at rest knowing that He’s near.

The Lord God is my Strength, my personal bravery, and my invincible army; He makes my feet like hinds’ feet and will make me to walk [not to stand still in terror, but to walk] and make [spiritual] progress upon my high places [of trouble, suffering, or responsibility]! —Habakkuk 3:19

God s̓ Your Guardian GodJesus says to you, …Be sure of this—that I am with you always, even to the end of the world (Matthew 28:20 TLB). Stop for a minute and just chew on this everlasting, inde-structible promise from God. Wherever you go, whether you are awake or asleep, God promises to be with you! God’s your Guardian, right at your side to protect you…God guards you from every evil, he guards your very life. He guards you when you leave and when you return, he guards you now, he guards you always (Psalm 121:5, 7,8 The Message).

Again, stop reading and think about that. The great Creator—the One who made the spectacular expanse of the stars, the majestic mountains and fathomless seas…the One who knit together the intricate inner workings of your human body—promises to be with you. The same Great I Am who was with Moses, Joshua and Jesus promises to be with you. That’s certainly something to shout about!

What He Promised Others, He Promises YouIt’s clear from Scripture that God does not show favorit-ism (see Acts 10:34; Romans 2:11). What He promises to do for one is available for all. So if God promised Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Joshua, Gideon, Solomon, Jeremiah, Paul, the Disciples and the nation of Israel that He would be with them, He will also be faithful to be with you. If you’re ghting fear, to God draw near. Ask Him for the peace to know your Daddy’s here!

Do not be afraid! Fear not! Do not fear! Over and over, these encouraging expressions resonate through God’s Word. In the midst of fearful situations that endeavor to devour our faith and paralyze our progress, He wants us to be at peace. How can we hold on to our faith and break free from fear when it seems to have a choke hold on our mind and emotions? By remembering our heavenly Father’s powerful promise—Daddy’s here!

All Faith Boils Down to ThisI believe every ounce of our faith boils down to one powerful promise repeated by our heavenly Father: “I am with you!” It is no accident that this fear-defeating phrase is frequently found next to the words fear not in Scripture (see Isaiah 41:10). Knowing that God is with us is the ultimate re extinguisher of fear. As believers, when everything we have in the natural is stripped away and exhausted—all our money, possessions, positions, education, in uence, etc.—the only thing we have left is the greatest thing we have: the promise of His presence!

As a little boy, I battled with fear countless times, espe-cially at bedtime. Fearful thoughts of a monstrous menace in the closet, under my bed or in the hall haunted me many a night. The one thing that ultimately put my mind at ease was telling myself, Daddy’s here! Knowing that my 6’2, two hundred and fty-pound papa was within yelling distance infused me with an inner sense of safety and
