Only 12 people have ever made the longest ever human journey, a round trip of half a million miles…
Communist Russia takes an early lead in the ‘space race’, with the first satellite in 1957 and the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin in 1960.

Armstrong and Aldrin spent about two and a half hours on the moon, taking pictures, setting up experiments, and collecting samples of moon rock
Before they left the moon they were able to photograph the Earth, as it rose above the horizon.Neither astronaut can remember who actually took this picture.
In 1999, the American magazine, Time, voted this picture as ‘the photographic image of the twentieth century’

The final mission, Apollo 17, managed to finally get the ‘whole Earth’ photo.
It cost $24,000,000,000 in 1960s money, 5% of the entire spending of the US government in the 1960s.
Why was it ever done? Really just political rivalry with Russia, it’s unlikely that America or any other country would be willing to spend that much now.
Was it worth it?
Since then there have been over 200 shuttle missions, space stations, space walks, but all in Earth orbit.
