Juan Diego was a 57-year-old widower from a small village near Mexico City. On the morning of Saturday, December 9, 1531, he was on his way to a nearby barrio, or district, to attend Mass in honor of Our Lady.

Juan was walking by a hill called Tepeyac when he heard beautiful music that sounded like the warbling of birds. A radiant cloud appeared and in it stood an Indian maiden dressed like an Aztec princess. Our Lady spoke Juan’s language and sent him to the bishop of Mexico with a message: The bishop was to build a chapel in the place where she had appeared.

Juan delivered the message, and the bishop eventually told Juan to have the lady give him a sign to prove her identity. About this same time, Juan’s uncle became seriously ill. While caring for his uncle, poor Juan tried to avoid the lady. Nevertheless, she found him, assured him that his uncle would recover, and provided the sign for Juan to take to the bishop: roses, which he carried in his tiIma, or cape.

On December 12, when Juan Diego opened his tilma in the bishop’s presence, the roses fell to the ground, and the bishop sank to his knees. There on the tilma, where the roses had once been, was an image of Mary exactly as she had appeared to Juan Diego.

Parishioners Julieth and Juanfra DeVillena had the opportunity to travel to Mexico City and see the very chapel Our Lady of Gua-dalupe asked for in her message. As Julieth explained, “As Hispanics, my husband and I had heard about Our Lady of Guadalupe and how amazing this story was, but it was

in the U.S. where we learned to love Our Lady of Guadalupe even more. Our increased admiration for this culture and the devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe is due to the way many of our Prince of Peace parishioners live out this devotion and message of love.”

Seeing the dedication of others to this story — a story that points us all back to Jesus — Juanfra and Julieth made their trip to Mexico City with a very special intention. Julieth described, “Knowing that she is our mother and that the Virgin’s advocation at Tepeyac is very miraculous, we decided to go visit Mexico City and personally ask her to help us to increase our faith and also to intercede for us, before God our Lord, for a very special intention that we had in our hearts: to have a baby. And guess what? After having some difficulties conceiving, I became pregnant and we are expecting our son, whom we call Juan Diego, in honor of Our Lady of Guada-lupe and the indigenous man to whom the virgin appeared and who was canonized by St. John Paul II in 2002.

“We learned how big the love of God is and about the love of our mother, who showed in front of a humble and regular indigenous man how much she loves us by deciding to appear with a mestizo face, how huge a message of peace and communion she left us throughout her visit, how she under-stands our needs and our pain and wants the best for our souls, and how she as a mother always wants to lead us to Jesus’ presence. My husband thought that the cloak was re-ally big — I told him that it was part of Juan Diego’s clothing, so then he had in mind that it was a very small image.

2When we arrived at the basilica and he saw the image inside a frame, his expression was, ‘It’s big!’ It was a magical moment.

“We also thought that this was a Mexican tradition, but once in the basilica, we understood that this was and is a very diverse cultural devotion.” When asked how this pilgrimage impacted their faith, Julieth said, “Being in front of the true tilma, where Our Lady of Guadalupe decided to take shape, is already a miracle. To understand how this simple fabric has remained intact for so long and how many details are on it, impossible to scientifically explain, is simply amazing. But the most important experience for us was the peace that we felt there. We cannot describe with words the feeling of overwhelming peace and tranquility. It was the feeling of being loved and embraced by your mother.

“We feel that we are closer to God; we have increased our faith and trust in God’s will. We have many reasons to be grateful, and we know that our mother in heaven is always taking care of us and interceding for us and that God’s timing is truly perfect.”

On December 11 at 6:30 p.m., Prince of Peace will host a community celebration for Our Lady of Guadalupe. We’ll pray a rosary, have Mass, share delicious food, and experience beautiful culture through dances, a reenactment of the history of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and so much more. Julieth said, “This feast to celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe, ‘Empress of the Americas,’ is more than a Mexican or Latino celebration. It is the celebration of the love and compassion of our Lord, who in His infinite mercy sent His and our mother with a message of peace. This is a celebration of unity, fellowship, love, and compassion. We celebrate Our Lady, who wanted to look like us to demonstrate that God is for everyone and loves everyone.” Join us for this beautiful encounter with Christ, and don’t forget to invite your friends and family.

Como Vivir la Fe Puede Inspirar a OtrosJuan Diego era un viudo de 57 años, de un pequeño pueblo cerca de la Ciudad de México. El sábado por la mañana, 9 de diciembre de 1531, se dirigía a un barrio cercano para asistir a la Misa en honor a Nuestra Señora.

Juan caminaba por una colina llamada Tepeyac cuando escuchó una música hermosa como el canto de los pájaros. Apareció una nube radiante, y en ella se encontraba una doncella india vestida como una princesa Azteca. Nuestra Señora le habló en su propio idioma y lo envió al obispo de México. El obispo debía construir una capilla en el lugar donde ella apareció.

Finalmente, el obispo le dijo a Juan que la señora le diera una señal. Casi al mismo tiempo, el tío de Juan se enfermó gravemente. Esto llevó al pobre Juan Diego a tratar de evitar a la dama. Sin embargo, ella lo encontró a Juan Diego, ey aseguró que su tío se recuperaría y le proporcionó rosas para que se las llevara al obispo en su tiIma.

Julieta y Juanfra DeVillena tuvieron la oportunidad de viajar a la Ciudad de México y ver esta capilla que Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe pidió en su mensaje. “Como hispanos, mi esposo y yo habíamos

escuchado sobre Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe y lo increíble que era esta historia, pero al vivir en los Estados Unidos, fue donde aprendimos a amar a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe aún más. Nuestra creciente admiración por esta cultura y la devoción a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe se debe a la forma en que muchos de nuestros feligreses de Prince of Peace viven esta devoción y mensaje de amor “.

Después de haber tenido dificultades para concebir, luego de visitar la Basílica quedé embarazada y ahora esperamos a nuestro hijo, a quien llamamos Juan Diego, en honor a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, y al hombre indígena, a quien se apareció la virgen, canonizado por San Juan Pablo II en el 2002.

Can you imagine living without hope? A staggering 15% of Georgians live in poverty, and more than a third of those in poverty are children. These 1.6 million people in our state struggle each day just to get to the next. Everyone’s experience with poverty is different, and everyone needs a different solution. At Prince of Peace, we hope that we can be part of those solutions; this is why we have a Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

Parishioners who volunteer with St. Vincent de Paul are fueled by a personal relationship with Jesus, visit those in our local community who are experiencing all forms of poverty, and get firsthand insight into their circumstances. Volunteers start by listening to these people’s stories, then act by helping them with their most urgent financial needs. Next, we connect them to our own resources and others available in the community and offer them hope for a better tomorrow.

People can be involved with this necessary work in several ways. Those wanting to help can join the ministry that orga-nizes and distributes food from the food pantry. Others can become home visitors: people who, through their presence, bring Christ into the lives of families searching for hope in

This year, St. Vincent de Paul and

our Men’s Club are teaming up to display the Giving Tree. The Giving Tree is decorated with ornaments that list specific items that people need during this time of year. We help parents give Christmas gifts to their children and help adults make ends meet. We are helping people in our own community, our own backyard. Please stop by the tree, choose some ornaments, and shop for the items that will help make Christmas brighter for a local family. We ask that gifts be returned to Prince of Peace by December 8.

St. VIncent de Paul is a international organization with nearly 100,000 trained volunteers in the United States providing 12.5 million hours of volunteer service in 2018, helping more than 5.4 million people through visits to homes, prisons and hospi-tals providing more than $1.1 billion dollars in support.

What sort of preparations do you make to celebrate Christmas? From cleaning to cooking to traveling, there is always a pe-riod of getting ready. The Church gives us the season of Advent to help us spiritually prepare for the birth of Jesus and to have a proper celebration.

This year, we will host about 9,000 people on campus for Christmas over the vari-ous Mass times. Many of these people will be visiting or will be coming to Prince of Peace for the first time!

We’re inviting you to assist as a door greeter, as a crowd assistant, as a member of the parking lot team, or with decorating for the celebration of Christmas. We’d love your presence in making Prince of Peace “home” for people during Christmas so that they have a great experience with us.
