MicroStrategy has developed a comprehensive set of best practices, tools, and processes that deliver effective

conversions and accelerate business benefits.

We do not simply replicate legacy reports.

Page 3: Journey to the Intelligent Enterprise...• SAP BusinessObjects is deployed on-premises. Despite some overlap in features between BOBJ and SAP Analytics Cloud interoperability between

We optimize the design of your best reports to leverage the capabilities of the MicroStrategy platform.

Our recommendations reduce the number of legacy reports by 50-80%, providing an effective alternative to

report proliferation seen on legacy platforms.

This reduces conversion cost and future maintenance costs.

MobilityBusinessObjects doesn't have the ability to create customized iOS and Android applications to bring mobile analytics to your workforce. It also does not have write-back capabilities or optimized caching.

…That Lacks Many of the Features of a Modern Analytics Solution

ClientsBusinessObjects lacks modern platform APIs. It does not provide connectors to Tableau, Power BI, or Qlik.

Data DiscoveryBusinessObjects is scaling back future development in their data discovery product, Lumira. This leaves BusinessObjects without a product for self-service analytics across multiple deployments.

Recap of Top DifferentiatorsDifferentiator MicroStrategy BOBJ

Data Access

• Offers built-in data wrangling and blending capabilities and is supported across all data sources.

• End users can perform transformations on data prior to visualizing information using dozens of functions available via graphical interfaces and without exporting out to Excel.

• Data prep in SAP Lumira is supported but with certain limitations• For example, transformations such as converting date to day-of-the

week is not an automated process

Gateways

• MSTR supports in-memory cube technology, reducing the need to access data directly from the data warehouse.

• MSTR in-memory cubes can be quickly loaded with data using parallel threads from the database which can also be optimized and fine-tuned for specific databases.

• Out of the box in memory technology is limited. The Web Intelligence micro-cube is single-user and does not scale.

• The Lumira engine is based on a technology built by the HANA team, but it cannot be tuned nor can it scale the way MSTR MTDI cubes can

Clients• Using the Push API, organizations can push external data in

JSON format using REST APIs into in-memory cubes on the MicroStrategy Intelligence Server, so users can readily consume, process, and analyze the corresponding data.

• BusinessObjects does not have a mechanism for third-party applications to push data as cubes. Customers can only use the limited data sources that are certified by BusinessObjects. In order to use any other data source, customers would have to wait until it's included as a part of the platform

Platforms • MSTR provides one platform for all of the enterprise’s BI requirements on-premises or on the cloud.

• SAP BusinessObjects is deployed on-premises. Despite some overlap in features between BOBJ and SAP Analytics Cloud interoperability between those environments is still limited

Metadata and Governance

• Objects can be combined to create higher level objects (e.g. attributes and metrics make up a report; reports, filters, and prompts make up a document).

• This also covers filters, reports, prompts, custom groups, reports, dashboards, and documents.

• Local reporting objects are not shareable among users: Many calculations, conditions, and prompts are typically created new for each report and cannot be easily used as building blocks for other reporting objects

MSTR vs. BOBJ: 5 Things to Remember Category MicroStrategy BOBJ

Metadata Management

Objects can be combined to create higher level objects (e.g. attributes and metrics make up a report; reports, filters, and prompts make up a document). This also covers filters, reports, prompts, custom groups, reports, dashboards, and documents.

NO single version of truth: metadata is modeled in a number of different layers: Universes, HANA views, and BW, all of which are completely different.

Single Code Base MSTR provides one platform for all of the enterprise’s BI requirements.

There are multiple tools for multiple requirements. It is common for a customer to have Lumira for Modern serf service Data Discovery with Design Studio as its IDE, Xcelsius for Dashboard development, and Business Web Intelligence for reporting and analytics.

In-Memory

MSTR supports in-memory cube technology, reducing the need to access data directly from the data warehouse. MSTR in-memory cubes can be quickly loaded with data using parallel threads from the database which can also be optimized and fine-tuned for specific databases.

Out of the box in memory technology is limited. The Web Intelligence micro-cube is single-user and does not scale. The Lumira engine is based on a technology built by the HANA team, but it cannot be tuned nor can it scale the way MSTR MTDI cubes can.

SecurityMSTR provides object level ACLs, fine grained user permissions, data personalization, digital identity based two-factor authentication, object certification, and geolocation security.

BOBJ provides security at data and report level and cannot provide security at object level.

Mobility

The MSTR mobile app, capable of data manipulation, write-back, EMM, offline, and more, can be used on iOS and Android devices. MSTR empowers users to create apps integrated with MSTR and tailored to any function or role.

Limited mobile deployment with no native apps, no support for write back capabilities, and limited offline activity (only on iPad).

7

Data AccessCognos has minimal support for modern NoSQL, HDFS or API based application sources. Cognos metadata development requires the use of two separate modeling tools which deliver inconsistent experiences and uneven functionality.

MobilityCognos has discontinued investment in native iOS and Android mobility. It also lacks the REST API, writeback, native caching, and automation support required to manage and deploy Transformational Mobility solutions.

ClientsThird-party access to Cognos is only permitted through a proprietary SDK, low-level JavaScript, or information export. It does not provide connectors to Tableau, Power BI, or Qlik.

Source: MSTR SMEs assessment of tools and platforms.

Cognos has narrowed its focus to front-end client capabilities and relies on complex IBM products to supply enterprise connectivity, data preparation, and multi-cloud services.

Cognos Analytics is Perceived as Immature with Basic Product GapsIBM is no longer perceived as a disruptor, but instead it is playing catch-up with the market leaders

Differentiator MicroStrategy Cognos

Platforms• Regardless of deployment method, users are given

access to the same capabilities and features of the MSTR platform.

• SaaS, Dedicated Cloud, and on-prem Cognos Analytics deployments do not share the same set of product features.

Distribution & Alerting• Within the comments panel, users can tag other

colleagues who will automatically be notified of their mention.

• Users can add comments to live reports and to saved report output versions but cannot tag other colleagues using @mentions.

Scalability• The platform can create multiple parallel threads to the

database, increasing the speed at which data is fetched from the warehouse.

• Cognos does not support parallel threads.

Federated Analytics

• The Enterprise Semantic Graph abstracts all enterprise assets into a common business glossary for the tools users know and love. MSTR empowers anyone to use their tool of choice to build trusted analytics and mobile applications.

• Cognos does not work OOTB with other data discovery tools; it does not natively enable popular BI tools (Qlik, Power, Tableau, etc.) to integrate with its semantic layer.

Transformational Mobility

• The MSTR mobile app, capable of data manipulation, write-back, and more, can be used across all iOS and Android devices. MSTR empowers users to create apps fully integrated with MSTR and tailored to any function or role.

• Depending on the use case, Cognos Analytics users must choose between a mobile app and a browser UI (ex. Mobile app only supports Active Reports). Neither the app nor the web UI support write-back / transactions.
