Student Rep [email protected] The Presentations: Join us for this “Lunch-n-Learn” presentation on industry updates from both Alberta Welding Optimization Committee (AWOC) and NAIT. Journey of a Welder — Presented by AWOC (Matthew Yarmuch and Richard Walmsley) There are reports that the average age of a welder in Canada is 55+ years old. Industry, stakeholders, and government need to collaborate to ensure new Welders are drawn into the welding field and effectively retained – something easier said than done. This presentation will focus on discussing ways to ensure the welder – the individual person – is the focus of attention during their apprenticeship, shop-floor training, and certification to industry standards and regulations. There are unprecedented challenges that we have/are all facing in recent years; however, we must continually strive for clarity, efficiency and flexibility in our regulatory systems. To that end, a review of proposed changes to the Alberta Apprenticeship system will be highlighted. Additionally, potential changes to the Pressure Welders Regulation for qualification of Grade B Welders and others such as Grade C, Pressure Tack Welders, etc., will be presented. Concepts for streamlined qualifications specific to advanced technologies such as modern wire-feed processes (GMAW, MCAW, FCAW, etc.) and mechanization/automation systems (Welding Operators) will be discussed. Many of these proposed changes are currently being reviewed by various Boards and Regulatory committees – hence, this presentation provides a way for direct industry feedback as these concepts are moved forward. We invite you to listen-in and then voice your opinion to enhance the Welder’s Journey now and into the future! NAIT’s Advanced Welding Technology Diploma Program — Presented by Mike Smith, NAIT Mike Smith from NAIT will provide a brief overview of the newly announced Advanced Welding Technology Diploma Program currently under development at NAIT.
