Belgaum: Its not 'Gabbar Singh' of `Sholay', but 'Basanti' of 'Hanuman Nagar' in Belgaum which frightens

the residents in there. Here it is a female pig, popularly known as Basanti by localites, who has become a

terror for all.

Usually dogs and pigs are enemies of each other. But at Hanuman Nagar things are totally different. Ever

since 'Basanti' was noted in the area, she has always been very nice to dogs. There are hundreds of

dogs, both stray and tamed of different breeds in that area and Basanti has succeeded in developing

good relations with most of them. But with human beings, she is gradually getting harsher day after day

and dogs do not mind her do so.

According to the residents of the area, Basanti turned more violent after she delivered 7 pups. People of

the area feel her hatred with humans. There are many incidents in which she has attacked people or

caused accidents while crossing the streets along with her group. Every day one or the other accident is

reported, especially on double road of Hanuman Nagar due to Basanti and group. And if anyone dares to

shoo her, she may go wild anytime.

In wee hours there are several persons who have morning walk along with their dogs in Hanuman

Nagar. Most of those dogs are seen waving their tails when they see Basanti. If the dogs are left open,

they will start playing with Basanti and her pups. And if their owners try to take them away, Basanti

threatens them with her fierce approach.

Residents now ensure to chain there dogs before they take them out for morning walk. Some of them

even change their routes if they see Basanti on their way. Even local walkers and joggers will not dare to

pass if the huge family of Basanti stands on their way, as they know it can be dangerous.

Interestingly, many of the residents of Human Nagar are high designated government officials. Though

their families too are facing the problem, they seemed to be least cared about it. When approached the

concerned officials of City Corporation, they said that they will soon launch a drive to pick all the pigs in

the city.
