MUSÉE D’ART MODERNE ET D’ART CONTEMPORAIN REBUS In order to recreate these sound experiments, Lars Fredrikson used special tools. Find one of them by solving this rebus. Beware, the answer is in french, but very close to the english word ! THAT’S THE END OF THE EXHIBITION! The last part of the exhibition is entirely white. Nothing is hung on the wall, and yet there is an artwork! Could you describe it? Try to imagine where the sound you hear can come from: The sound of a cat licking its paws The sound of a carpet being rubbed with your hands The sound of a brush on a support The sound of a sponge on a wall SOUND WORKS Lars Fredrikson was challenged by the fact that the human ear only perceives frequencies between 20 Hertz and 20,000 Hertz. Beyond this range, the human ear no longer hears sounds. This ability decreases with age: as we get older, we may no longer hear some sounds. There are lower (infrasound) and higher (ultrasound) frequencies! Lars Fredrikson thus integrates sounds that are not heard into his conception of listening, generating sensations and vibrations that are understood with the whole body. Some animals can feel these ultrasounds. Find out which animal can perceive them by linking the following points. Answer: a bat! She communicates with her fellow human beings through ultrasound. Lars Fredrikson drew inspiration for some of his works from body rhythms, such as blood circulation or heartbeat. Answer: Oscillator. An oscillator is a machine that mechanically reproduces sounds. COLLAGES Look closely at Lars Fredrikson’s collages. He has cut visuals from magazines that he reworks by collage, like other artists in the MAMAC collections, such as Robert Rauschenberg, Jacques Villeglé or Mimmo Rotella. The images he has selected are often linked to current events of this time. LUMINOKINETIC ARTWORKS

Lars Fredrikson is an artist who has been interested in the composition and decomposition of matter. He was fascinated by the «elementary particles» which are the smallest elements we know: they are located inside the nucleus of atoms, which are the elements that make up matter. Imagine how small it must be! They measure: 0.00000000000000000000000001 m. An ant measures about 0.6cm. An ant is therefore 60000000000000000000 times larger than an elementary particle. It’s up to you. Draw and classify these elements from the largest to the smallest, placing them on the next staircase:• The Moon• The Eiffel tower• A giraffe• The Earth• A human being• A TV• A cicada• An ant• The Sun• A book

Lars Fredrikson is an artist who has been working since the 1960s on virtual spaces and the represen-tation of time. He appeals to our senses through his works that take the shape of experiences. It offers works that mobilize our entire body. Lars Fredrikson studied chemistry and electronics, he is fasci-nated by the scientifi c advances and new technologies of his time but also by poetry. As a genius handyman, he even makes his own machines!

You may be surprised by some artworks that may not look like what you imagine. Are you ready to discover his world?

Moreover, this exhibition is monographic, which means that all the works you will discover are created by one and the same artist. In this exhibition, be careful and fi nd the following themes:

human being

DYNAMIC STRUCTURES

In his works called «Dynamic Structures», Lars Fredrikson uses mechanisms that he creates himself, close to watchmaking and that draw points and lines on the canvas. In this way, the movement is visually represented. Fredrikson gives us a new experience, because we are not used to seeing time represented in this way!

INOXS

Lars Fredrikson seeks to give the viewer an experience of space and time. To do this, he bends, engraves, hammers, incises stainless steel plates. When we stand in front of it, our refl ection is partially distorted and we can never see ourselves in full. Here are different distorting mirrors, look at their curves and shapes. Imagine and draw on each mirror your distorted refl ection.

Did you know?Lars Fredrikson was born in 1926 in Stockholm and died in 1997 in France. He is a Swedish artist who has been teaching at Villa Arson, the National Superior School of Art in Nice since 1971. He created the fi rst workshop of sound and electro-acoustic and visual research. Before that, Lars Fredrikson worked in a Swedish Army research laboratory in 1945 and then in the Merchant Navy a few years later. Thus, he travels to South America, New Zealand, and does several round-the-world trips.
