Around The Pastures – 2012 is essentially a statistical study of entries in Vol-ume 60 of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society of America Stud Book. Written as a series, and published yearly in the WPCSA Journal, the purpose is to give accurate information about the “state of the breed” regarding the breeders and animals most active in managing this aspect of Welsh ponies and cobs in the U.S.

When analyzing most trends (without using the term “total”) all U.S. bred ani-mals will be the database used with those born in other countries not represent-ed. When “total registrations” are the basis, all animals registered in the given year will be included without regard to their country of origin.

Emphasis is definitely on the animals bred recently in the U.S., the stallions and mares involved and the breeders making the decisions. Total registrations dropped to 329 in 2012 compared with 430 in 2011. Although not the focus here, it can be noted that registrations of animals bred in the United Kingdom dropped to 10 (15), with one of those coming through Canada (15). Figures shown in parentheses refer to 2011 and are included for comparison.

BREEDERS:One hundred sixty-four (179) breeders bred 320 (329) U. S. bred ponies/cobs for Volume 60. Six (12) breeders, each registering six or more animals, bred 55 (113) ponies/cobs with 55 (167) others accounting for the remaining 265 (283) entries. Prefixes registering 6 or more foals in 2012 regardless of year foaled were: (*denotes less than six in 2011)

TOTAL 2012 REGISTRATIONS:The 2012 Stud Book will contain 329 (430) total entries, including Sec. A,114 (157); Sec. B, 170 (220); Sec. C, 21 (18) and Sec. D, 24 (35). The Sec. B total is again higher than the other three sections combined.SIRES:Only two (6) stallions produced 6 or more foals for this volume. Both are Sec-tion B, one U.S. bred and the other a U.K.

About 99% percent of 200 stallions used to produce 320 U.S. foals sired 5 or fewer foals each. A geographic analysis of 320 U.S. foals in this volume shows the following breakdown by show zones:

`Foals from 38 states were registered. No foals were reported in Alabama, Alaska, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Kentucky, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, South Dakota, or Wyoming.

The Central area still registers the most foals and more breeders register in the Central area, but the gaps between the areas continue to diminish. The largest losses in breeding activity are on the West Coast. SECTION A: THE WELSH MOUNTAIN PONYThere will be 114 (157) Sec. A ponies in the 2012 Stud Book including 4 (2) U.K. imports. 50 (82) U.S. foals from previous years and 60 (71) 2012 U.S. foals. In accord with WPCSA registration rules, all of these foals are A x A.

The use of imported stallions to produce foals in the U.S. continued in Vol. 60. 14 (22) U.S. Sec. A foals were produced by a total of 10 (15) imported (U.K.)

stallions. The imported stallions used were: *Springbourne Dazzle 3 foals; *Cefnfedw The Senator and *Ceulan Lwcus, (2 foals each) and with one foal each: *Ceulan Cadog, *Forlan Tarragon, *Friars Sooty, *Menai Silver Buck, *Menai Solo Mio, *Springbourne Eldorado, and *Vimpenny Sweet Sultan. Twelve (12) imported (U.K.) mares have 14 (15) foals in this volume: *Menai Seren Fwyn and *Menai Silver Sandal (2 foals each), *Ceulan Lynette, *Ceu-lan Miranda, *Ceulan Sirius, *Lippens Queen Bee, *Menai Madonna, *Menai Nightingale, *Menai Seren Aur, *Menai Silver Acorn, *Randan Absolutely Fabulous, and *Sunrising Corndolly each have one foal in vol. 60.

SECTION B: THE WELSH PONYSec. B accounts for 170 (220) foals in Vol. 60. These include 3 (9) U.K. im-ports, 86 (101) U.S. foals born before 2012 and 81 (97) U.S. bred 2012 foals. Parentage of the 81 (198) U.S. bred 2012 foals: BxB-149 (168), BxA-12 (24), AxB-6 (6).

Breeders used 21 (18) Sec. B stallions imported from the U.K. Only one A stallion (*Ceulan Cadog) sired a B foal. Active Sec. B sires were *Wedder-lie Mardi Gras (8 foals), *Bunburry Jamboree, *Telynau Royal Anthem, and *Lanarth Scout (3 foals each). With 2 offspring in Vol. 60 are *Cadlanvalley Manhatten, *Hilin Peredur, *Hilin Trysor, *Lemonshill Top Note, *Myriewell Enzo, *Pendock Prospector, *Sleight of Hand, and Wedderlie Marmaduke (2 each) and siring one each of the new registration are *Cadlanvalley Boda-cious, *Cottrell Amadeus, *Downland Rembrandt, *Pennwood Gwr Bonhed-dig, *Skellorn Dauphinoir, *Smoke Tree Spun Gold, *Telynau Royal Charter, *Wedderlie Maradonna.

Twenty-seven (30) U.K. mares produced 28 (28) foals in this group. None of the mares were Sec. A. The Sec. SECTION C: THE WELSH PONY OF COB TYPETwenty-one (18) Sec. C entries in Vol. 60 include no C’s (1) imported from the U.K or (1) Canada. Included in Vol. 60 are 6 (3) U.S. foals born prior to 2012 and 15 (13) foals born in 2012 in the U.S.. Parentage of the 16 Sec. C U.S. foals in 2012: CxC-11 (5), CxA-1 (2), CxD-4,(2), AxD-2 (2), BxC-1 (1), DxA-1 (1), DxC-1 (1). Among the 16 (16) 2012 U.S. C’s 11 (9) were sired by 6 (3) stallions im-ported from Britain. Sec. C’s *Oldeworlde Brillance sired 3 foals. *Menai Discovery,*Neuaddparc Welshman, *Synod Ronan provided 2 foals each. *Donys Conflict sired one Sec C. and Sec. A stallion *Courtway Formal Attire and *Sec. D mare Banquo Gwenhwyfar were parents to one foal.

Four (4) U.K. Sec. C imported mares were used: *Glanteifi Sinsir, *Menai Crisialis, *Parcybedw Starlight and *Tyngwndwn Rebecca.

SECTION D: THE WELSH COBTwenty-four (35) Sec. D’s appear in Vol. 60 including 2 (3) U.K. imports, 15 (20) Cobs foaled here in previous years and only 7 (9) 2012 foals born in the USA. All 24 Sec. D animals are DxD.

Eleven (13) U.S. born Sec. D entries were sired by 8 (7) British imports: Head-ing the list with 3 get is *Nebo Calonog; *Fourways Calico with two, and *Derwen Denmark, *Llanarth Morien, *Minyffordd Megastar, *Okedon Taffy, *Parcmorfa Ffraed and *Powysvalley Trooper with one each.

7 (9) mares, all Sec. D imports including *Kurbaums Future from Germany produced 7 (10) new entries in this volume: Other mares, with one foal each, are *Derwen Breuddwyd Replica,*Dyffryngwy Heledd, *Geler Megan, *Lla-narth Sweet Magic, *Sydenham Gardenia and *Trofarth Buddug.
