Welcome to SteelmasterIt can take just a few minutes for unprotected steelwork in a building to attain temperatures of around 550°C in a fi re. At this temperature, steelwork loses its load bearing capacity and the structure is likely to collapse, giving the fi re service little time to bring the fi re under control and little time for people to evacuate.

In certain countries, building regulations and legislation demand fi re protection to upgrade the fi re resistance of buildings – and the Jotun range of Steelmaster intumescent coatings can certainly stand the heat. As modern design often involves steel being expressed as an architectural feature, intumescent coatings are frequently the protection of choice.

Solvent-based Steelmaster products offer up to and including 120 minutes of fi re protection and can be applied both on and off site. Jotun’s Steelmaster waterborne product with low odour, is often chosen as the ideal solution for onsite application. A full range of top sealers, both waterborne and solvent-based is also available to complement the intumescents.

The helpful Jotun technical team can offer advice on specifying intumescents, interpreting the different legislation to recommend the most suitable Steelmaster products for your project. Their expertise will take into account the Environmental Protection Act, plus Construction, Design and Management regulations as well as factors such as the design of the structure, conditions during application and exposure conditions.

And the benefi ts of choosing Steelmaster don’t stop there! Jotun is a one-stop shop for fi re and corrosion protection products and services. Jotun even offers a designated Intumescent Paint School for both specifi ers and contractors which can be held in house or at our premises.

Jotun Protects PropertyJotun’s Steelmaster intumescent coatings were fi rst produced in the UK in 1999, since when, Jotun has protected many prestigious projects such as Hong Kong Airport, Kuala Lumpur Airport, Selfridges Department Store at the Bullring, Birmingham, the Press Centre for the Athens Olympic games, new terminal at Cairo airport, Dubai Metro and Meydan Racecourse.

With the introduction of Steelmaster intumescent coatings, Jotun is now able to offer the building industry a complete range of protective and decorative coatings dealing with the protection of structural steel to the decoration of interior surfaces, wooden doors, and concrete fl oors. A meeting with our technical experts prior to formulating design will ensure a complete understanding of what is required and the formulation of a paint specifi cation, taking into account the type of structure, the years of service required and fi nal cosmetic fi nish.

How to specify Steelmaster Increasing environmental awareness combined with legislative pressures such as EPA (Environmental Protection Act) and CDM (Construction, Design and Management) regulations place a demanding burden on the specifi er. The Jotun technical team can give advice about and recommend the Steelmaster products that are most suitable for your project. Factors that need to be considered are not only the design of the structure but also conditions during application and exposure conditions after application. The table below gives environment categories and corrosivity grades.

Loadings

To calculate the appropriate Steelmaster loading, it is necessary to fi rst determine the period of fi re resistance required. Several further factors need to be considered including:-

Shape of the steel and the number of sides exposed

Whether a steel beam, supporting concrete fl oor or supporting column

Its Hp/A value or Section Factor value. Refer to Figure 1

The choice of Steelmaster product

The appropriate Steelmaster loading can then be calculated from the current Steelmaster loading tables.

How intumescent provides fi re protection

Jotun’s Steelmaster fi re protection coatings appear identical to conventional paint fi nishes. However in a fi re they swell to become a meringue-like substance which provides vital insulation for the structural steelwork. The degree of fi re protection needed is normally defi ned by building regulations and the thickness of the coating is specifi ed to satisfy those requirements.

Fire resistance is expressed in units of time (generally 30, 60, 90, and 120), so one of the contributory factors to the fi re resistance is the heating rate of the member. This governs the time taken to reach its specifi c failure temperature.

The heating rate of each section will vary depending on its dimensions. A short heavy section will heat up more slowly than a tall light section. (View Figure 2.)

This effect is stated as the ‘Section Factor’ and is denoted at the Hp/A value of the steel section. The Hp/A value is calculated from the dimensions of the steel section.

HP = The perimeter of the steel exposed to the fi reA = The cross sectional area of the section

Heated Perimeter (Hp)Section Factor (Hp/A) = Cross-Sectional Area

The larger the surface area relative to the cross sectional area the higher Hp/A value. Therefore more material is required with a higher Hp/A value.

Steelmaster 60WBApplication Guidance Notes

The following is for guidance only – more comprehensive details are specifi ed on the Jotun Steelmaster 60WB Technical Data Sheet.

General– Water based intumescent coatings such as 60WB are generally suitable for use in dry/internal environments– Store at temperatures between 5-35ºC– Users should be fully aware of the target wet fi lm thickness requirements for the project before starting application. The thickness must be monitored regularly– Appearance of the coating after application will depend on the method of application, experience of the operator and other factors

Theoretical coverage (not including losses during application)– 1 litre per m2 @ thickness of 1mm/1000 microns wet (0.72mm dry) – 1 spray coat– 0.5 litre per m2 @ thickness of 2mm/2000 microns wet (1.44mm dry) – 2 spray coats

Preparation– Ensure that the surface of the metal is clean, dry and free of all contaminants immediately prior to application of Steelmaster 60WB– Jotun recommends the use of an appropriate matt or low sheen xylene-based primer, such as Penguard Primer, Penguard Special, Penguard Express (2 pack) and Pilot QD Primer (1 pack)

Airless spray applicationFor optimum results please ensure the following requirementsare adhered to:– Minimum pump ratio 45:1– Use of 30 mesh internal fi lter– Tip size 17-21 thousand (0.43 – 0.53mm)

– Typical 30-40º angle (depending on steel size and shape)– Apply each coat with several quick spray “passes”– Maximum thickness per coat 1mm wet (0.72mm dry)– Pressure at tip Minimum 20 MPa (200kp/cm2 2800 psi)

Brush application– Brushes should only be considered for very small areas– Maximum thickness in these instances is 0.56mm wet (0.4mm dry)

Drying– Steelmaster 60WB is a water based product, therefore drying is directly linked to ambient conditions– Each coat must be fully dry before application of the next coat– The coating must be protected from rain and damp conditions. If water-based intumescents become wet, they may blister, wrinkle or crack, requiring remedial work

Topcoating/sealing– Ensure that Steelmaster 60WB is fully dry and that the specifi cation has been achieved before applying a top coat or sealant protection

Steelmaster 60/120 Application Guidance Notes

The following is for guidance only – more comprehensive details are specifi ed on the Jotun Steelmaster 60/120 Technical Data Sheet and application manual.

General– Regular monitoring of the wet fi lm thickness is essential– Do not thin the product prior to use. It is supplied at the correct concentration for use through suitable spray equipment. Thinning may adversely affect the product’s properties and will reduce volume solids– All equipment must be thoroughly cleaned before and after use High standards of cleanliness are extremely important

Preparation– Ensure that the surface of the metal (substrate) is clean, dry and free of all contaminants immediately prior to application of Steelmaster 60/120– The steelwork must be protected from rain or condensation– Operators must be aware of the target fi lm thickness requirements for the project before starting the application– Primers must be approved for use with intumescents. Typically, Xylene-based alkyd phosphate of epoxy matt or low sheen primers may be used, including Penguard Primer, Penguard Special, Penguard Express (2 pack) and Pilot QD Primer (1 pack)

Airless spray applicationFor optimum results please ensure the followingrequirements are adhered to:– Minimum pump ratio 45:1– Use of 30 mesh internal fi lter – Tip size 19-27 thousand (0.48 – 0.68mm)– Typical 30-40º angle (depending on steel size and shape)– Apply each coat with several quick spray “passes”– Maximum wet fi lm thickness per coat in single spray coat application – 2000 microns in ideal conditions

– Maximum wet fi lm thickness per coat for brush application – 570 microns– It may be necessary to reduce loading per coat for small/intricate steelwork applications– Pressure at tip 25 MPa (250kp/cm2 3600 psi)

Multi-coat spray applicationWhere multi-coat application is required, optimum drying may be achieved by controlling the wet fi lm thickness to approx 1000 microns per coat, with 4-8 hours drying between coats

Topcoating/sealing– For best results use Jotun approved topcoats – The intumescent dry fi lm thickness (DFT) can only be determined once the coating is suitably dry– Before applying a topcoat or sealant, ensure that the specifi ed DFT has been achieved and approved (remembering to deduct primer thickness)

DisclaimerThe information in this sheet is given to the best of our knowledge based on laboratory testing and practical experience. However, as the product is often used under conditions beyond our control, we cannot guarantee anything but the quality of the product itself.
