Joshua 10:28-39[28] And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of Jericho.[29] Then Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah:[30] And the LORD delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of Jericho.[31] And Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it:[32] And the LORD delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.[33] Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.[34] And from Lachish Joshua passed unto Eglon, and all Israel with him; and they encamped against it, and fought against it:[35] And they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.[36] And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, unto Hebron; and they fought against it:[37] And they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but destroyed it utterly, and all the souls that were therein.[38] And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and fought against it:[39] And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to her king.
What is Jihad?
Civilizational Warfare
against kafirs
So what is jihad?
• A political system based on ethical dualism• A political method with political goals• A legitimate defensive act against anyone who
has offended Allah by engaging in unbelief – rejecting Allah and his prophet – Muhammad. Thus 9/11 was a defensive act because Americans have refused to accept Allah as the only god and Muhammad as the last prophet.
Who is a kafir??• Allah’s name for an unbeliever, thus a kafir, is hated and despised by Allah because of who Allah is. Allah hates the kafir.
• Muslims thus may mock, torture, punish, kill, behead, confuse, plot against, terrorize, deceive, cause pain, cheat, insult, subjugate, make war on and humiliate.
• A kafir is viewed as ignorant, blind, arrogant, evil, a liar, a partner of Satan, doomed, detested, unclean and cursed.
• A kafir is a Christian or Jew (also an infidel), a Hindu, Buddhist, Zoroastrian, an atheist, an African (yes in Islam, they are a special group)
Allah’s ObjectiveQ3:151
YUSUFALI: Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the unbelievers (kafirs), for that they joined companions with Allah, for which He had sent no authority: their abode will be the Fire: And evil is the home of the wrong-doers! PICKTHAL: We shall cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve because they ascribe unto Allah partners, for which no warrant hath been revealed. Their habitation is the Fire, and hapless the abode of the wrong-doers.
SHAKIR: We will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve, because they set up with Allah that for which He has sent down no authority, and their abode is the fire, and evil is the abode of the unjust.

• Muhammad authorized 38 other major battles, many lesser raids, assassinations and executions – he sat with his 12 year old wife and oversaw the beheading of over 800 Jews on one day.

Strategic Themes and Drivers in Islamic Law
The Example of Muhammad - Words “I am commanded by Allah to go and fight all
the people of the world until they confess there is no God but Allah, and I am his messenger, and to pray five times a day and to give alms. And if they do that, their blood will be spared from me.”
Haddith (Bukhari)
Strategic Themes and Drivers in Islamic Law
Hadiths
• Identifies who can be killed• Under what circumstances• At what times• What to do with prisoners• Essentially a tactical manual for jihad
Jihad in Law• At the pinnacle of Islamic law rest Allah’s “Rights of Pure Worship”
– Jihad the 6th Right of Pure Worship
• “Rights of Pure Worship” are “Rights of Allah”
• “Right of Allah” create “Duties on Man”
• Because Jihad is a requirement of Allah’s, the right cannot be nullified by man
Question: If all law comes from Allah, can man change or subordinate it to another law?
Imran Ahsan Khan NyazeeTheories of Islamic Law: The Methodology of Ijtihad
More Jihad in Law• When jihad is a legal duty, its meaning is limited to that of jihad as warfare
against non-Muslims to establish the religion.
• This duty is to continue until the entire planet is made the dar al-Islam. The basis for this understanding is the Qur’an, sahih hadith, and consensus among the scholars.
Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Apostle, nor acknowledge the religion of truth, (even if they are) of the people of the Book, until they pay the jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued. (Qur’an 9:29)
– Who said this?
Professor Majid Khadduri of Johns Hopkins
• In accordance with Islamic legal theory a state of war exists between the dar al-Islam and the dar al-harb until the time when the former overcomes the later. The state of war should, accordingly, come to an end when the dar al-harb has disappeared. At such time, the dar al-Islam, as the abode of peace would reign supreme in the world. It may be argued, therefore, that the ultimate objective of Islam is the achievement of permanent peace rather than the perpetuation of war.
– So, what are non-believers living in the dar al-harb?– Note an Islamic concept of Peace?
Majid Khadduri, The Islamic Law of Nations – Shaybani’s Siyar
Tafsir – Ibn Kathir
Commenting on Surah 2:216 “Fighting is ordained for you…”
“In this Ayah, Allah made it obligatory for the Muslims to fight in Jihad against the evil of the enemy who transgress against Islam. Az-Zuhri said ‘Jihad is required from every person, whether he actually joins the fighting or remains behind. Whoever remains behind is required to give support, if support is warranted; to provide aid, if aid is needed; and to march forth, if he is commanded to do so.’”
Ibn Kathir: page 596
Jihad in Law
“Islam makes it incumbent on all adult males, provided they are not disabled or incapacitated, to prepare themselves for the conquest of countries so that the writ of Islam is obeyed in every country in the world.
Those who study Islamic Holy War will understand why Islam wants to conquer the whole world.”
Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini
Taught as Part of 12th Grade Curricula• Muslim scholars have agreed that jihad to spread the faith of
God is an obligation, …
• When is battle jihad in the path of Allah? To fulfill an order from Allah, sacrifice in His path, spread the creed of monotheism, defend the realms of Islam and Muslims, and raise up the word of Allah. This is jihad in the path of Allah.
• Jihad continues until the Day of Resurrection It is part of Allah's wisdom that he made the clash between truth and falsehood continue until the Day of Resurrection. As long as this clash endures, jihad continues. It is not limited to a specific time. As long as there is falsehood, error, and unbelief, the jihad continues. Its virtue endures in accordance with each time and place. Allah said, "Nor will they cease fighting you until they turn you back from your faith if they can...“
