Transcript of Joseph Sharplesstudiotimelines.com/assets/joseph_sharples_march19.pdf · task of rebranding a multi...
Joseph Sharples I design with an open mind as ideas can develop and evolve from the tiniest of occurrences in everyday life.
I have worked at studios such as SEA, Six, Graphic Thought Facility, Accept & Proceed, dn&co and Eye Magazine.
I’m fascinated by the role design can play, it’s ability to engage and change people’s opinions.
I consider the client’s problem as much as the solution and I am focused on creating a point of difference, whilst also finding the most appropriate execution.
My passion for photography has led me to assisting multiple professional photoshoots, from which I have gained an in-depth understanding of studio equipment and shooting techniques.
I am also an avid collector of beautifully designed books, it’s a craft I respect highly and inspire to practice in my career.
To see more of my work, please visit my website or Instagram page.
Thank you for your time.

SEA I participated in the complete redesign of a new client’s identity allowing me to witness a professional approach of discussions and problem solving.
SixI jumped at the chance to be thrown in at the deep end at Six with my first task of rebranding a multi million pound development and investment company, Glenmore. My design was a tweaked and polished version of their existing brand mark, maintaining the same idea but with a bolder appeal. I am proud to of had my design chosen by the client.
Graphic Thought FacilityI contributed to the design of a newly published book by COS. I worked on all design stages from initial experimentation process to final art-working and managed the production the book’s illustrations.
LucienneRoberts+I freelanced for Lucie Roberts, working on the exhibition ‘Graphics and Politics 2008 – 2018’ exhibited at The Design Museum. I contributed to the marketing and environmental design of the exhibition.
Accept & ProceedI worked on briefs for clients such as Nike, Moleskine, Diageo and V&A. I contributed in the early idea generating stages of a number of projects as well as attending and preparing presentations for clients.
dn&coI worked on projects for a wide range of clients, each offering their own unique challenges. I had to adapted to the fast pace nature of the studio as projects require quick turn-arounds, whilst maintaining extremely high standards.
Eye Magazine / Esterson AssociatesI am proud to have my name credited in Eye97, I contributed towards the contents page and a number of articles. I also worked on editorial projects for Esterson Associates for clients such as Museum Journal, History Today, Pulp and UAL.
Studio BlackburnBreifed by UCL School of Management to create a brochure for a study trip to Dublin. Our responce was to create a series of passport sized guide that offer valuable insights with an itinerary printed on the front.

Creating with Shapes by Usha Doshi
Whilst at Graphic Thought Facility I contributed to all stages of the design process from initial experimentation to final art-working.
Creating with Shapes is a book that reveals how simple it can be to design and make your own clothes by cutting out and folding basic shapes to create garments.
Created by fashion designer Usha Doshi, her concept derived from watching her granddaughters learn whilst playing.
Categorised by shape (square, rectangle, triangle, circle, oval and hexagon) each technique has a instructional diagram aside with photos of potential outcomes.
Joseph Sharples March 2019 Page 4Creating with Shapes by Usha Doshi
My main responsibility of the project was to manage the production of the instructional illustrations.
I collaborated closely with the client and a sub contract illustrator in making sure these designs leave no room for error in demonstrating the technique correctly.
This project immensely tested my communication and organisation skills as the illustrator was introduced late on meaning he had no understanding of the concept. I therefore had to clearly explain what I wanted and what amendments needed to be made under a strict short deadline
Joseph Sharples March 2019 Page 5Creating with Shapes by Usha Doshi
I assisted on the book’s high number of photo-shoots, witnessing the meticulous technique to achieve these image’s sculpture like qualities.
Throughout the publication the imagery’s setting gradually shifts from light to dark. This meant frequently adjusting the set such as lighting, camera settings and backdrop colour.
Once entering the retouch stage, it was my responsibility to keep all retouches up to date in a indesign file whilst simultaneously printing each one off to allow the other designers to suggest further adjustments.
This stage of the project required an intense amount of organization skills to keep on top of everything as the team of retouchers would send me multiple new edits every few minutes.

hook, hitch, hack, ditch
An awareness campaign designed to educate the public on the barbaric ways that sharks are slaughtered to produce shark fin soup.
Onomatopoetic language is used to generate graphic images in the mind. The thought provoking visuals create an uncomfortable awareness of the cruel manner in which sharks are killed.
Joseph Sharples March 2019 Page 8hook, hitch, hack, ditch
To accompany the posters was a newsprint and book, which both continued the playful use of type and highly textured imagery.
The visuals are created by scanning purposely damaged polystyrene ata high resolution, followed by editing.
This technique is designed to replicatesthe gory damage to the smooth skin ofthe shark whilst it’s being slaughtered.

Studio Timelines
A self initiated investigation into howsome of the most successful designstudios grow.
A series of maps, which show the career paths of every individual designer, past and present, that worked at one given design studio. This map is about a studio I highly admire, Graphic Thought Facility.
A year by year timeline is featured at the top with the names of all the designers listed downwards.
The map tracks all the design studios one individual designer has worked at before and after GTF.
The gradients of coloured lines represent the position the designer was at that particular time from intern to founder.
Joseph Sharples March 2019 Page 11Studio Timelines
The designers are separated into six sections as follows, founders, creative directors, senior designers, mid weight designers, junior designers and interns.
A distinct pattern is revealed as the map illustrates all the journeys of each individual designer set side by side as they climb the design ladder.
It’s fascinating how intertwined the design industry is, considering its scale scattered across the globe, however we still manage to be so connected with one another.

Graphic Thought Facility Studio Timelines Issue 1: 90 - 16
Graphic Thought Facility (GTF) is a London-based design consultancy with an international reputationfor appropriate, effective and original solutions.
Established in 1990, GTF is jointly owned and led by three directors, Huw Morgan, Paul Neale and Andrew Stevens, all of whom remain very much hands-on.
GTF has been invited to exhibit and talk around the world and our work is held in public collections in Europe and America. In 2008, ‘Graphic Thought Facility – Resourceful Design’ became the Art Institute of Chicago’s first ever show dedicated to the output of a single graphic design studio.
“It started because Paul Neale and Nigel Robinson and myself shared a work space at the RCA and got into a particular way of critiquing each others work and sometimes collaborating on projects. This worked well and it seemed a good ideato try and sustain thisafter graduation.“- Andrew Stevens
“We all worked quite differently on a stylistic level but we were very much interested in the same broader aspectsand minute details of design and culture and this seemed to make exciting things happen. Also, none of us were offered jobs on graduation so it seemed worth a punt.”- Andrew Stevens
GTF has introduced over 20 interns through their studio doors, some of which have gone on to work for studios such as Moving Brands, Pentagram, SomeOneand Designstudio.

Blast Design Studio Timelines
Led by Design Directors Colin Gifford and Paul Tunnicliffe. Gifford set up Blast with Martin Cox in 1996 with a desire to work with interesting clients who appreciate the difference design can make. Paul Tunnicliffe joined in 2004 after working with a number of top London studios, and together they set about building a creatively driven company.
“We combine intelligent thinking, beautifully crafted ideas and powerful messaging to produce engaging and effective design.”- blast.co.uk
Blast is the perfect example of how the people of studios link up withone another.
In 2008, both David Azurdia and Jamie Ellul had left to set up a agency named Magpie Studio, which went on to be high successful winning numerous awards. One thing you will notice is the constant exchange of interns and designers between Blast and Magpie. It has become almost mandatory that an intern that works with Blast must move on to work with Magpie and vies versa.

The Record Label: Standards Manual
A set of unique contemporary styled publications to support a personal campaign to keep the independent record label alive.
The manual itself is the exact size of a 12 inch record sleeve. Two 7 inch publications show my campaign’s plan and research.
I constructed the ring binders using a laser cutter to produce the components out of grey board.
Joseph Sharples March 2019 Page 14The Record Label: Standards Manual
Inspired by the ‘New York City Transit Authority Graphics Standards Manual’by Massimo Vignelli and Bob Noorda.I used Berthold Akzidenz Grotesk in place of Helvetica used in the original as I wanted to give my work a fresh look, whilst retaining the coherent and beautifully crafted characteristics.

Photography
On this page is a selection of my personal work. I am fascinated by the visuals and effects you can create by manipulating light.
My passion for photography has expanded ever since I first stepped foot in a Dark room whilst studying A-Level Photography.
I continue to experiment with film despite owning my own Professional set of digital equipment, the restricted number of shots forces yourself to meticulously consider each and every capture.
Joseph Sharples March 2019 Page 18Photography
On the right is a selection of design pieces I have photographed for other studios and myself.
My experience in design allows me to focus on the details designers will appreciate, which a sole photographer may miss.
I have assisted multiple Professional photoshoots, from which I have gained an in depth understanding of studio equipment and shooting techniques.
Whilst working at Eye magazine, I shot the press photos for Eye97, Esterson Associates archive and books reviewed on Eye’s blog.
