Second Sunday of Easter

(or Sunday of Divine Mercy)

Lectionary: 43 Gospel JN 20:19-31

Spiritual Reflection:

“The Cross had asked the questions; the Resurrection

had answered them. The Cross had asked: ‘Why does

God permit evil and sin to nail Justice to a tree?’ The

Resurrection answered: ‘That sin, having done its

worst, might exhaust itself and thus be overcome by

Love that is stronger than either sin or death.’”

-Archbishop Fulton Sheen

God’s forgiveness is greater than our sins.

Spiritual Questions:

1. When I recall my vocation story, how has God been

merciful to me?

2. What is locked in my own “upper room” and how

can I let Christ in?

3. Am I in touch with my personal doubts about God’s

merciful presence and how do I deal with them?

4. What barriers (walls) does God have to go through

in order to reach me?

5. What do I expect to get in return by believing in the

Risen Christ?

Due to the cancellation of public Masses we will suspend requests for

intentions until further notice. Mass intentions that have been requested

and already scheduled will be honored during Fr. Pastorius’ daily private

Mass in the order that they were scheduled. Since he is saying only one

Mass a day there will be an abundance of requests that will not be

fulfilled until our schedule returns to normal. Please know that all

intentions not used during this time will be rescheduled when normal

Masses resume.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the Parish Office is CLOSED.

Employees will be coming in periodically to check mail and voicemails and

many are continuing to work from home. Please be patient as we all adjust

to this new way of doing business. If you need to speak to someone in the

office but are not sure who to direct your call to, please leave a message for

Maria Murillo and she will be sure to forward your request/question to the

correct employee. She can be reached at 636-227-5247 ext. 1604.

1. Imperfect Gratitude I wish that I had

the right words to express the gratitude I

have in my heart for everyone who has

continued to support our parish financially

through these difficult times and for those

who have supported Fr. Ricardo and me

during this time with your kind words,

emails and cards. I never thought there

would be a time in my priesthood where I

would be told that I could not celebrate

Mass publicly for the good of the people of

God. This is the reality that we are in. One

of the many little sayings that I say to

myself is, “I don’t have to understand here

to be here.” I am not sure where I first

heard that phrase but I have repeated it to

myself when I am confused about knowing

what the next steps are going to be. I use it

as a call to action, and so even though I do

not have adequate words to express my

gratitude, know that I am deeply grateful

for all of you.

Just as there are no words to express my

gratitude, there are also no words to

express the level of concern I have for each

of you. Please know that I am praying

constantly for all of you and in a special

way for those who are working as first-

responders, medical workers, and all other

essential workers. My heart goes out to all

of you, especially all the children and teens

of the parish who have had their lives

disrupted, and in a special way those in

eighth grade and high school seniors.

As I journey through this difficult time, I

remind myself often of St. Ignatius’s rules

of discernment. He states in these rules

that God never wills times of desolation.

He allows them but never causes them.

Desolation is the term that St. Ignatius

used for times when God feels absent. St.

Ignatius points out that God allows these

times of desolation to take place because

He knows that He can bring a greater good

out of it. While I am not sure what this

greater good is or if I will even know it in

my lifetime, I am trying to trust in the Lord

by focusing on the smaller blessings that I

have in the past taken for granted. For

example, one family dropped off chocolate

Easter eggs and homemade Easter cards on

Easter. I have enjoyed “Zooming” with our

youth group on Sunday nights and getting

to know them better. The response to my

daily video reflections has stirred up in me

a greater desire to know scripture better

and has helped me connect with

parishioners in new ways. Our Stephen

Ministers have done an amazing job of

reaching out to the seniors of our parish

and our Saint Vincent DePaul Society

continues to do amazing work serving the

poor.

I pray that this time of social distancing

comes to an end soon and I look forward to

celebrating Mass and attending other

parish events with you all in person soon.

2. “Live this difficult moment with the

strength of faith, the certainty of hope,

and the fervor of Charity.” – Pope

Francis Archbishop Carlson has extended

his order for no public Masses for another

few weeks. Our parish was not, and is not,

set up for online streaming (I am not a

computer expert so I can’t explain why), so

we are recording the Sunday Mass ahead of

time and uploading it to our website. In

addition, I am uploading a daily reflection

on the Gospel and Greg Barker and Deacon

Dan are hosting different events through

Zoom. There are also family activities

available to download on our website.

Please go to www.stjoemanchester.org for

more information.

3. Parish Council It is time for us to have

new members added to the Parish Council.

When I first became pastor, I was told by

“experts” in the field of lay ministry that

the new way of doing parish council was to

have twelve people serve simultaneous

three-year terms. After three years of being

at St. Joseph, I do not think it is in the

parish’s or my best interest to have a

complete change over on the parish council

at this time. I am therefore going to ask

four of the twelve to remain for one more

year. Then I will choose (by drawing

names out of a hat) four people to serve a

two-year term and four more for a three-

year term. In this way, the new Parish

Council will consist of four returning

members, four new members with two-

year terms and four new members with

three-year terms. The role of the council is

to form a small faith community with the

pastor. In this community the pastor

shares his ideas about the future of the

parish and he feels comfortable enough to

allow the council to challenge him. If you

are interested please email me at

[email protected].

4. Shout Out A shout out goes to our

maintenance team who have seized this

opportunity to complete some major

projects and do some much needed

cleaning.

Today we

celebrate

Divine Mercy Sunday. God’s greatest

desire is to forgive us, pouring out His

infinite mercy upon us so that we may

be healed. Women and men alike who

have been involved in an abortion may

feel deep grief, guilt, anxiety,

depression, anniversary reactions to the

date of the abortion or what would

have been the baby’s due date, broken

relationships and a sense of alienation

from God and the Church. If this is you,

we want you to know that your

Church cares. Seek the Lord’s mercy

and healing through the Sacrament of

Reconciliation. Consider confidential,

compassionate help from Project

Rachel, a confidential Catholic

ministry offering hope and healing to

women and men hurting from past

abortions. Select “Find Help” from the

Spiritual Ponderings

Growing Old Gracefully

Using Richard Johnson’s book: A New Vision of Parish Ministry for Maturing Adults: How to

Construct, Organize, and Sustain a Vibrant Faith Formation Program for the Second Half of Life, we have

been reflecting on what it means to grow old gracefully. Richard Johnson lays out 12

principals for developing a parish ministry geared towards older adults. Quotes from this

book will be in bold. My reflections will be in the normal font.

Principal #7 The goal of parish ministry for maturing adults is spiritual transformation.

Personal Goal #7: I will look at aging as an opportunity to grow closer to God and not as a

curse. I should not be surprise that God wants to make me into something better.

So often we become blinded by our worldly attitudes that over-value personal

achievement, production, and vocational performance above all other values. Too easily

we equate younger with heightened performance and older with diminished

performance. While such beliefs may dimly reflect reality on the form level, they clearly

do not approach reality on a spiritual level.

Catholicism always sees each person as a person and that each person has innate God- given

dignity that can never be tarnished by what we do. All human beings are equally loved and

treasured by God. The sad part is that we often devalue people in our mind. God did not

hold “age” against Abraham, Sarah, Hannah, or Elizabeth.

Transformative learning allows us to realign our true selves with God.

The more positive one is with his or her self-esteem the more he or she will live a more

fulfilling life. The Gospel as St. John tells us is that God did not send the Son into the world

to condemn us but to save us and give life eternal (John 3:16). The voices of self-

condemnation are not the voice of God.

Principal #8 The content of programs offered in a parish ministry for maturing adults

rises out of the real situations in which such people live, including moments of

transitions and daily life.

Personal Goal #8: I will apply my spiritual life to my real life. I will act the same way

Saturday afternoon as I do on Sunday morning. There will be no duplicity within me.

Developing a new perspective on sickness makes all the difference in how spiritually

maturing adults see themselves… Wellness is an all-encompassing notion that includes

finding fulfilment on three levels of mature human living. The first level of wellness is

on the physical level; we simply call this “well.” The second aspect of wellness is

wellness of the mind, which we call “wisdom.” The third aspect of wellness resides on

the spiritual level of the soul, which we call “whole.” At every life step and stage, we

seek to become well, wise, and whole. This is particularly important in the maturing

years, for it’s here that one has developed an adequate level of maturation necessary to

really get a grip on these three aspects of wellness in a comprehensive way.

I want to be a person of authenticity and integrity and this can only happen if I allow God to

give me my identity. If I focus too much on what others think of me, I will find myself acting

differently with different groups of people. This is not always easy because we often desire

affirmation.

Principal #9 Parish ministry for maturing adults focuses on both interior and exterior

growth.

Personal Goal #9: I will try to keep myself physically fit and spiritually on fire for God.

The changes that later life brings can be received as opportunities or as threats. The

purpose of later life is to usher in a renewal of spirit where a new forum for growth and

happiness can emerge… Growth and happiness flow from the quest to discover new

purpose, new meanings, and new life.

As we live our lives change will happen. We cannot all stay at home with our parents

forever, we cannot keep our children from growing up, we cannot stop the aging process,

etc. This means that we can either embrace these changes as opportunities or we can see

them as curses. If we see them as opportunities and trust that God is with us in them, we

can grow through these experiences. I think a prime example of this is seeing how many

older adults have found joy in becoming grandparents.

Growing older means that I have to take care of myself physically because I appreciate being

alive, or it becomes a chore that I neglect. I know that I take better care of myself the more

grateful I am for all that God has done for me.

The covid-19 virus has

dramatically altered

everyday living. We

neighbors in need we are still making

phone calls and ‘virtual visits.’ If you or

someone you know needs help with

food or financial assistance please call

grace and protection.

Stephen Ministry Why

Lay Ministry? Stephen

Ministry is based on the

idea that all Christians are

ministers. The

responsibility for passing on God’s love

is for all Christians, not just for a chosen

few. God has given us all gifts for

ministry and called us to put those gifts

to use. Stephen Ministry is a place

where people with special gifts for

caring ministry can use those gifts to

bring Christ’s love to people in need.

Just for Kids

Sharing the Gospel Jesus gave the power to forgive sins through his apostles. Today the priests are his apostles. They remind us of

how God forgives our sins. You have the power to forgive those who hurt you. It is your choice to forgive as Jesus has forgiven you. It

is healthy for you to forgive. Anger makes your body tense and your muscles ache. When you forgive others, God sends his love to fill

your body and soul with peace.

Prayer Lord, help me forgive those who hurt me.

Something to Draw Draw yourself forgiving a friend who broke something you treasure.

Mission for the Week I will pray for those who hurt me and forgive them. Tell a friend or family member you forgive them if they

hurt you.
