CHAIRMAN'S REPORT by Darold Shirwo

As the year goes on we have had a very successful spring meet at Califor-nia Car Cover and the National has just ended, and as I was told was well done.

The board had to change the meeting place for the monthly meeting at Harbor Chevrolet as they were remodeling the facility, and we have met at a Mimi's (never again) and Polly's (uncertain) but the August board meet-ing on August 15, 2016 is anticipated to be at Polly's unless Dennis Lom-bardo (our front man) scouts a new place.

The fall meet is set for October 15, 2016 at Corvette Mike's and as usual will be a great meet; the Spring meet will be at John Piovesan's GM DownUnder on March 4, 2017. Remem-ber if you want your car to be judged in October you need to register it fast (online the best way).

We are going to have our 35th Anniversary and General Board meeting on November 5, 2016 and Ed V. will be sending out a flyer for all to register -let's try and make this as suc-cessful as our 30th with a huge turnout. I will harp again on our sponsoring the Spring Re-gional Meet in Laughlin and it is well on it's way to being another fabulous SoCal meet; we still need volunteers and sponsors. Ed and Barb were able to get some national sponsors when they were at the national and we ask for all our members to support the meet in what-ever manner you can - if you know anyone that can sponsor a meal, or other, please let me or Allen Morris know.

We will be publishing an event book with all the sponsors and meet information and as usual we will put in a $25 business card advertisement and encourage all members to do it.

I am on my way to Lake Tahoe for the VCCA 55th Anniversary Meet with my '61 and '64 and our dear friend Larry Pearson will be tagging along and Don T. and Allen M. will also be there.

Don't forget - "Save the Wave."

Cover Car! - Joseph Guthrie’s 1957

Duntov Award Winner The PATH TO PERFECTION of a Rare Fuelie By Joseph Guthrie Corvette enthusiast – It all started years ago while in high school when my best friend bought his first Corvette. It was a 1959 white with red in-terior dual quad 4 speed car. As high school kids we were having the time of our lives. We hit all the coastal hot spots and picked up a race or two at A&W and Bob’s Big Boy. What a ride, and what a car. I was all in and I knew the Corvette was a winner and would be a car to be much enjoyed. I kept the experience and feel-ing for Corvette for many years. With a new bride (now celebration 50 years), and two wonderful kids (Julie and Ryan) the desire and enthusiasm for the Corvette dwindled. However, over the years I would go to many Concours d’ Elegance shows. As you know there were many fabulous vehicles there and often there was a class for American Sports Cars and Corvette. This again heightened my interest in Corvette and the de-sire to own one. The search was on – In a visit to Palm Springs I found the car that I just could not do without. Yes, it’s the 1957 Venetian Red/Shoreline Beige two top Fuelie 4-speed 283ci with 4:11 positraction and radio de-lete. It is a very late production (VIN E57S106080), August 23, 1957, likely to have been built 10 days before the end of the production run. The ’57 was my favorite Corvette. I didn’t know just how rare it was; but, I knew it was indeed a very rare one. A total of 1,040 fuel injected Corvettes were sold and on-ly 713 283ci, 283hp engine Corvettes. The 4-speed manual transmission was released for sale on April 9, 1957 and only 664 were sold. To boot, there were only 1320 Venetian Red Corvettes on the street. I just had to have this car! I had only seen it for 12 minutes and the offer and purchase was made. Now for the good part – The FI Corvette had a full body off restoration with two Regional and one Chapter NCRS Top Flight Awards. It was also the Best of Show at West Coast Corvette Expo.. Other awards were Red-Line Corvettes 8th All Corvette Car Show – Best of Show, Rodeo Drive Concours d’ Elegance Award, and Gold Award – Bow Tie Cheys – at International Convention in Ventura. A father and son partnership on financing and work to be completed was developed in October 1993 to bring the car to this level of perfection. The car was an excellent example of professional work-manship; and, it was an investment grade show quality car. Ownership – I took ownership of the ’57 Fuelie in November of 2009. Although it was an award win-ner, there were still improvements to be made. With review of judging sheets from previous NCRS judging and use of the Corvette Technical Infor-mation Manual and Judging Guide the study began and the chase for perfection was underway. I

Page 7: Joseph Guthrie s 1957 Duntov Award Winner - NCRS · 2020. 10. 17. · Chapter 10 Board Meeting 7 PM at M Polly’s Pies Restaurant 4680 E Los Coyotes Diagonal, Long Beach, CA 90815

knew originality, condition, and cleanliness were the key factors for perfecting the car. Many hours were spent searching for original replacement parts that conform to reference standards. Com-ponent quality was a must for restoring and au-thenticating the car. NCRS Guidance – In the restoration great care has been taken to go exactly to the letter to re-storing as original. There would be no way of achieving this without the Corvette Technical In-formation Manual and Judging Guide, and the tal-ent of individuals that have assisted along the way. A huge thank you goes out to all the NCRS members that have been a part of such a great technical publication. I would also like to give credit to others for their knowledge and masterful work on the car. Restoration – Restoration study, parts search, technical work, and a lot of elbow grease is what it took. I did as much as I could on the restoration; however, turned to the experts on the more difficult work. Things like engine and transmission work, body work, hard top restoration and paint was done by the experts. My efforts were primarily to make the determination as to what needed to be done as guided by NCRS judging and do the things that I am confident with.

NCRS Judging – At the 2012 National Conven-tion in San Diego a score of 96.2 was reached which was just short of the 97 points needed to qualify for Duntov Mark of Excellence Award judg-ing. There was a paint issue with the coves; oth-erwise, I would have scored 97 plus. During the next several months intense hours of mechanical preparation and performance testing was con-ducted in preparation for the Performance Verifi-cation (PV) Award. The PV Checklist was key to ensuring the car was ready for the official NCRS PV testing by John St. Peter. A PV pass was re-ceived on the first attempt at the 2014 Rocky Mountain Regional. Not bad for a ’57. The next judging was the Flight Judging and a Top Flight Award was received at the 2015 Arizona Regional with a score of 98.2. The stage was set and now the car had qualified for the Duntov Award. The

Duntov was awarded at the 2015 National Conference in Denver with a score of 98.6. This was the best of all the judging scores and the car has met the mark of excellence. NCRS Top Flights – Over the period from November 2009 through July 2015 under my ownership, a total of 8 NCRS Top Flight Awards have been received. With the awards from the prior owner, the total Top Flight Award count for the car now stands at 11 and includes 2 National Awards, 3 Regional Awards, and 6 Chapter Awards. Many have asked – why do you enter the car into so many judging’s. The answer is simple – it is to validate that the work that has been done corrected issues and is to the NCRS judging standards. Besides, it provides me the opportunity to share what has been done with others and hear about their experiences too. Along the way – My Fuelie has been on display for the Beckstrand Cancer Foundation at the Balboa Bay Club for a fund raiser. For more than 35 years, the Foundation’s goal has been to improve and enhance the quality of life for cancer patients and their families. The car was featured in Corvette Magazine, April 2013 issue. The article was composed by Jim Richardson as a shining example of the C1 breed and pho-tographed by the renounced photographer David Gooley. The car has also been exhibited at 9 different Southern California Concours d’ Elegance shows. It has received 7 Best in Class Awards and 5 Second Place Awards. At the Dana Point Concours d’ Elegance show in 2012 it was one of three cars featured in the program and noted as a complete and meticulous restoration to perfection and among the best Fuelie examples in the world. It has been a great experience to have initially gone to Concours showns;

and then to have an award winning Corvette at the shows. Knowing the car has made the mark of a world class vehicle has been very gratifying. Proposal to Indy 500 – This year was the 100th anniversary of the Indy 500 at Indianap-olis Motor Speedway. Each year racing fans travel to the speedway in Indiana to check out one of the oldest and most significant events in the world of motorsports. The Motor Speed-way contains enough seats and infield space to accommodate approximately 400,000 fans, all eager to take part in one of the largest sin-gle-day sporting events in the world. In recognition of the 100th Indianapolis 500, I submitted a proposal to tribute America’s only true sports car, Corvette and the numerous times that Corvette has been the pace car at Indianapolis 500. Corvette is American and Corvette racing is a major part of American racing heritage. Corvette has seven classes – C1 thru C7. The recommendation was to give tribute to racing heritage and having seven (7) corvettes, one from each generation, performing an “American Heritage Race Car Lap”. I felt this would be a fine tribute to the Indianapolis 500 history and could be done before the Former In-dy 500 winner laps. Vehicle selection would be made from the finest Corvettes in the country. I was hope-ful that my ’57 Corvette would be the entry for the C1 Corvette. Indy officials have for years worked with Chevrolet on the special events and program for race day. The 100th anniversary was special; but, the American Heritage Race Car Lap was not to be. For the first time the Fuelie did not get the award. Going forward - there is always next year and a new proposal is underway. Imagine - you have a vintage 60 year old Corvette and it is a pace car at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The vision will hopefully be-come reality. The team – We must always thank those whom have supported our success! First and foremost, my wife Lynne has been by my side all the way and supported the time and investment in pursuit of the distin-guished Duntov Mark of Excellence Award. Very importantly as well is that I have had the good fortune of working with a great group of Go-To-Guy’s that “know their stuff”. Thank you all. John St. Peter – outstanding technical coach Dale Raymond – expert engine and transmission mechanic Jose Murillo – expert fiberglass and paint restorer Richard Fortier – rare parts supply, service and technical advisor David Sokolowski – rare parts supply and technical advisor Daniel Espino – expert restoration and PV preparation Next stop – Plans are in place to display the Fuelie at future Southern California Chapter NCRS meets and at the upcoming 2017 Western Regional Convention in Laughlin NV. I will also continue to exhibit the car at future Concours d’ Elegance shows. This gives me a chance to share the beauty of the car with others, and to tell the story about the 60 year old Fuelie. For now, I would like to think that this is one Corvette story whose final chapter has yet to be written. Joseph Guthrie (52723)

The Northwest Regional returned to Bend, Oregon this year, but to a new location. Instead of being out in the country at a ski lodge, we were in the town of Bend. The Riverhouse Hotel and Convention Center was an ex-cellent location. The facility had just completed a complete renovation. In fact those who had arrived on Wednesday were able to enjoy a grand reopening celebration with food and entertainment. The Deschutes Riv-er runs through the middle of the property, so many of the rooms had patios facing the river. This provided a great view and the sounds of the river flowing by. Almost everyone took advantage of the shopping and dining in downtown Bend. Friday evening the town was celebrating the first Friday of the month, so all of the stores, gift shops and restaurants were packed.

The Southern California Chapter was very well represented. Five cars received Top Flight Awards and one passed Performance Verification. Most members who attended either judged, tabulated or helped sell NCRS publications.

Minutes of SCC Board Meeting- by Ralph Haun

SCC NCRS BOARD MEETING, May 9th, 2016

OPEN MEETING

The meeting was called to order at 7:35 PM at Mimi’s

Restaurant in Lakewood by Chairman Darold Shirwo.

Board Members in attendance were Darold Shirwo, Rich

Norbrothen, Allen Morris, Jerry Louer, Pat Louer, Ed Vi-

gnone, Rusty Hobbs, Verity Hobbs, Bob Crane, and Ralph

Haun. Board Members absent were Rob Myrick, Gary

Hiltunen, Don Troyer, Carol Troyer, Beverly LeGate, John

LeGate, and Jamie Fiffles.

Guests attending were Barbara Vignone, Dennis Lombar-

do, and Jan Lombardo.

SECRETARY’S REPORT

The minutes of the previous meeting had been submitted

by the Secretary to Board Members for review. One revi-

sion was made. Ed made a motion to approve the re-

vised minutes which was seconded by Rusty. The motion

carried.

TREASURER’S REPORT

Verity summarized the various accounts and their balanc-

es, and noted she was moving our CD to obtain a better

rate. She also noted that each month she moves one

hundred dollars from checking to savings in order to pre-

vent fees. She said that she had been unable to get

some previously incurred fees refunded. Darold will look

into this. Allen made a motion to approve the Treasurer’s

Report which was seconded by Ralph. The motion car-

ried.

OFFICER’S REPORTS

Allen brought up the email comments/questions re-

ceived just before the meeting from Beverly. Bev-

erly had noted: A. She needs a few more weeks to

obtain information on Regional T-shirts & Polo

shirts; B. She would like to use Duke Williams for

the Tech Session this fall. Rusty moved that this

be approved. It was seconded by Allen and it car-

ried; C. She asked about dates for the tech ses-

sion and Darold suggested we not worry about it at

this time. Finally she noted that due to the 2½

hour one way drive, she and John will probably not

be attending meetings on a regular basis.

Ed stated that the chapter presently has 161 members.

Darold asked him if we were receiving new mem-

bers that already belonged to National? Ed replied

only a few.

Rusty noted that he had received requests for mentor-

ing from persons belonging to chapters other than

SCC. These were car owners whose home chapters

did not have the mentor service, however they had

been referred by SCC members.

and some discussion was had regarding the hard

printed copies verses digital copies. The hard cop-

ies were preferred.

Regional 2017: There was lengthy discussion on

this subject. Assignments for volunteers as previ-

ously distributed to board members were summa-

rized. Ed noted that there will be no separate

web site for the regional, but there will be a des-

ignated section on our chapter web site. Sponsor-

ships were covered noting that the number one

sponsor should be for the reception, and other

meals will also be eligible. Some discussion was

had about the possibility of approaching National

sponsors to participate. Darold will look into this.

It was noted that we need follow up information

on the possibility of Jessup’s Chevrolet sponsoring

shirts for judges and volunteers. The dates of

October 26-28th (including two nights) will be set

aside for a Laughlin inspection tour by the Board

and other planning members. Finally, Allen and

Darold have volunteered to plan the route for Per-

formance Verification testing.

NCC Spring Meet: This was held several weeks

ago in Suisun City. It was well executed and ap-

preciated by all those attending, including several

from SCC, plus others from out of state.

35th Anniversary Party: Bob reported that all is

in order for the date of November 5th. He will

make a flyer for membership distribution. A hotel

shuttle should be available in the AM only, and it

is believed that will be sufficient.

National Meet, July 17-21st: A presentation on the

Laughlin Regional would be desirable to have at

the National and this was discussed.

SCC Fall Meet: The chapter has backed out of

the previously scheduled meet at The Hills in La-

guna Hills due to undisclosed costs and other mat-

ters. After discussion Allen made a motion to ask

Mike Vietro about holding it at Corvette Mike’s and

this was seconded by Bob. The motion carried.

Rusty and Verity volunteered that a Judging

School could be held at their home.

Swap Meets and Sokolowski Tours: TBD.

Automobile Driving Museum Tour: On schedule

for May 21st.

Miscellaneous: There was no Miscellaneous Old

Business.

NEW BUSINESS

Activities: Darold suggested the possibility of a

driving trip to the Big Bear area. This will be fur-

ther discussed at a later meeting.

2018 National: This was discussed as it seems

probable that it will be held in Las Vegas.

SCC 2017 Spring Meet: I t was noted that John

Piovesan had volunteered GM Downunder for the

meet, and after discussion Ralph made a motion

that it be held there March 3-4th which was se-

conded by Allen. The motion passed.

Miscellaneous: There was no Miscellaneous New

Business.

CLOSE MEETING

There being no further business, it was moved by Rusty

that the meeting be closed. This was seconded by Allen

Allen noted the Celebration of Life for Mike Scott, to be

held in Anaheim on July 17th.

OLD BUSINESS

Bonding Strip: Technical articles are needed for

the upcoming issue.

Regional, Laughlin 2017: Issues still needing

resolution were discussed. These included the

Laughlin “scouting trip” by Board Members October

26-28th; volunteer assignments; shirt sponsorship

by Jessup’s Chevrolet; artists logo work; and also

that the shirt pricing needs to reflect shipping

costs. Allen noted that Corvette Mike had commit-

ted to a sponsorship, and Corvettes Downunder

had also committed to sponsor. Darold will speak

with Jeff Reade and discuss a commitment from

American Motoring Memories. Barbara passed

around a sample program pamphlet for review and

comment. Advertising and participation by other

Western US chapters was discussed. Advertise-

ment positioning and advertising rates were dis-

cussed. Allen suggested that primary committee

members get recognition in the pamphlet. Jerry

stated that AAA will provide goodie bags, and it

was thought that about 300 bags would be need-

ed. It was noted that a map of Laughlin and com-

plimentary pencils would be good to include in the

goodie bag.

Thirty Fifth Anniversary Party: Ed stated he is

ready to prepare a flyer for this. Bob will get to

work on one. It was noted that we need to deter-

mine if a silent auction will be held.

Anniversary Party were brought up. It was moved

by Rusty and seconded by Ralph to hold a silent

auction. The motion carried.

last month by approximately a dozen attendees

and a private docent was included. There were

numerous British vehicles.

conded by Rusty to send a $300 check to PCRF

now, in order to obtain matching funds from Na-

tional. The event in Balboa frequented by Barry

McGuire, and Mike & Edd of Wheeler Dealers is

getting quite popular and was discussed as a pos-

sible location to promote the NCRS. Holding the

General Membership Meeting in December was

welcome a tour to his very large facility of old

Corvette parts for sale. Those who have been

there stated how interesting and unusual it is.

Downunder on March 3-4, 2017 was discussed.

John Piovesan has stated that the facility will be

available.

Miscellaneous: Barbara said she had spoken

with Tom Barr, who asked if SCC would have in-

terest in helping with the 2018 National in Las

Vegas? This was discussed, and more information

would be helpful to make a decision.

motion to leave this decision to the Treasurer and to ap-

prove her report was made by Allen and seconded by Pat.

er parking. This was seconded by Rusty and it

passed. Gary presented a sample “goodie bag” for

discussion. Don has called Rick Smith for possible

event support and is waiting for a return call. Da-
