    Introduction

Joseph Friend was the fifth son of John Friend Sr. (1728 to aft. 1808). Joseph was

probably born in 1764 near present day Paw Paw, WV. Joseph traveled with his father to

Western Maryland and settled in what became the Friendsville, MD area. Joseph Friend

married Sarah Green about 1795 and together raised seven children. Sarah Green was

probably born in Monongahela (Preston) County, VA in 1777. As a child, Sarah

survived one of the last Indian attacks of the time. Sarahs father (John Green) perished

in the attack and her mother and sister were taken into captivity. Although wounded,

Sarah managed to survive. Joseph Friend and Sarah Green would live and die in the

Friendsville area. There are no gravestones marking a final resting place for either

Joseph or Sarah, however they and their descendents have left an indelible impression on

    Friendsville and Garrett County.

We have attempted to outline the recorded history of Joseph Friend, Sarah Green

and their descendents. Personal histories, lands deed, wills, military records, photographs

and US Census records have been included in this text. We should point out that three of

Joseph and Sarahs sons were only briefly outlined in this book. Andrew Coleman

Friend, Josiah Green Friend, William Edmundson Friend and their children will be

featured in greater detailed in three separate books.

It is our goal to preserve this history before it is lost to time. We have spent

countless hours reconstructing families from multiply recorded sources. The information

used here, although thoroughly checked, may still contain unintentional errors for which

we truly apologize. We openly encourage additional information and corrections to this

    text.
