Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat marks the midpoint of our 2012 season (how fitting that our hump show has a camel in it) with lots of great theatre in the wings to round out this 20th Season. To build the spirit of celebration, the hilarious rural musical comedy Chickens returns to rule the roost starting September 21. Last seen in Chemainus in 1995, this wacky, wonderful and touching show has taken on legendary status with Chemainus Theatre faithfuls and often tops patron show request lists. Rod Beattie takes over the coop starting October 31st as the affable and laughable Bay Street broker turned farmer Walt Wingfield in Wingfield’s Folly – Canadiana at its very best! The Season closes with a traditional Christmas offering, The Gifts of the Magi. MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR MARK DUMEZ

Welcome to the Chemainus Theatre Festival! This summer, we offer a musical that ranks consistently high in our audience surveys for good reason. Songs span the epic journey of Joseph with all kinds of musical influences – pop, ballads, country and even a little bit of Elvis in Ken Lavigne’s self-important Pharaoh – this classic work by Webber and Rice has something for everybody.

Anyone who has grown up with siblings probably knows a little bit about rivalry. As a twin, with two additional siblings for a total of four, our house was filled with epic tournaments, basketball games in the driveway and occasionally suggesting to the youngest, our sister, dining on a bug no one else would dare to eat. Thankfully, we all still like each other and know the value of apologies when antics went beyond friendly competition. You can’t pick your family after all.

The epic story of Joseph – a braggart turned penitent turned world ruler – is one of the most thrilling of Scripture. It has so many twists and turns, so many startling surprises, broken dreams, prolonged hopes and an incredibly powerful closing chapter. The disguised brother, who has every reason to inflict pain on his distraught family, turns instead to love. While the musical’s treatment is playful, the undercurrent of reconciliation remains strong. I’m glad Joseph dreamed, and, when faced with the grim reality of sibling rivalry gone horribly wrong, chose a path to peace – so that his dream and his family’s story might continue to call to us today.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES SHANE SNOWJoseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat is a simple story. When Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice first wrote Joseph as a presentation for a preparatory school in 1968, they told the story in fifteen minutes. In expanding it to the ninety minute extravaganza you will see tonight, they created a kaleidoscope of musical styles. The show moves quickly from production number to production number, each with its own particular aesthetic. The structure of Joseph is essentially a musical review. There isn’t a single moment of the show that has to look or feel the same as any other. The fun of creating a production of Joseph is getting to dream up each chapter of the story as a distinct reality with its own style of movement. As a choreographer, it is exciting to have the opportunity to explore so many genres in one show.

As uncomplicated as the story of Joseph seems, there is real heart and inspiration in the redemption and reconciliation of the dreamer and his family. At the forefront of my attention in shaping this production is making sure the relationships and storytelling are real and honest…then bring on the dancing girls! It is a fine balance that I hope cultivates the best this musical has to offer.

Ultimately, my aim was to bring to Chemainus the excitement and spectacle this show is known for. When you leave the theatre tonight, my hope is you have a tune or two rolling around in your head, a smile on your face, and a spring in your step. It has been an absolute joy putting together this production of Joseph. My many thanks to the incredibly talented cast, crew and designers for bringing this dream to reality.

NORMA BOWEN Costume Designer

As an associate artist with Chemainus Theatre, Norma has costumed or performed in more than 40 shows over the last ten years. Favourite design credits include Amadeus, A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline, The Miracle Worker, and A Streetcar Named Desire. Norma has also costumed shows for TheatreOne, Carousel, Theatre North West and Studio 58 (of which she is a graduate). Upcoming: costume design for The Gifts of the Magi at Chemainus Theatre Festival, and performing in Harvest at WCT.

ROBIN BOXWELL Sound Designer

Robin works as a technical director and sound designer all throughout Western Canada. Robin is pleased to be returning to Chemainus after designing for Fiddler last summer. Recent highlights include, sound design for Romeo and Juliet, special effects design for a touring premier of Nutcracker, and Robin recently returned from Calgary’s High Performance Rodeo as technical director of Ubuntu (The Cape Town Project) (WTC).

DARREN BURKETT Zebulon

Darren is thrilled to be back in Chemainus! Previous Chemainus Theatre Festival credits include Guys and Dolls and Oklahoma! Favourite theatre credits include productions with The Boys Upstairs Equity Co-Op Glory Days; Carousel Theatre The Wizard of Oz, a Jessie award for A Year With Frog and Toad, Seussical; Arts Club Hairspray, White Christmas, Beauty and the Beast; TUTS Annie Get Your Gun, Footloose; RCMT A Chorus Line, West Side Story, and The Music Man.

ADAM CHARLES Joseph

Adam is thrilled to be spending his summer in Chemainus with this ridiculously talented cast and artistic team. Some favourite credits include: Eddie in Blood Brothers, Link Larkin in Hairspray, White Christmas, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (Arts Club), Leaf Coneybear in ...Spelling Bee (WCT), Troy Boltan in High School Musical (Viva Musical) and Rocky in The Rocky Horror Show (Project X). Adam would like to thank his parents and sisters for their unwavering support as he goes along on this roller coaster of a journey.


LESLEY CROGHAN Children’s Choir Director

Lesley was thrilled when friend, Director Shane Snow asked her to help out with the children’s chorus! Currently teaching at Davis Road School in Ladysmith, she co-runs a Musical Theatre Club at the school. Three of her talented students are in this production and she is so proud of them! Performing in professional theatre, Lesley’s favourite role was that of Diamond Tooth Gertie. This Fall, she’s directing Oklahoma for SIMTS.

WADE GAMBLE Benjamin

Wade is so grateful to be performing at Chemainus again. Upon graduating from CCPA his first professional job was Treasure Tales, the KidzPlay show in 2008. Wade has since based himself in Toronto and appeared on stages across Canada. Past credits: West Side Story (Neptune Theatre); A Christmas Carol, White Christmas (Theatre Aquarius); Wizard of Oz (Citadel Theatre); Beauty and the Beast (Silvermist). Now residing in Ladysmith, David is a professional pianist/singer and a music educator. David’s performance credits include The Banff Film & Shaw Festival. David initiated musical theatre programs in schools and was musical director for several shows including You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, Seussical the Musical, Working and other musical revues. David is thrilled to have the opportunity to perform with the Chemainus Theatre Festival.

KEN LAVIGNE Pharaoh & Levi

Ken Lavigne is a highly acclaimed tenor who has headlined performances on many world stages, including New York’s Carnegie Hall. He has worked with producer David Foster, performed for His Royal Highness Prince Charles, and has recently released his fourth solo CD, Keep Holding On. MARSHALL MCMAHEN Set & Lighting Designer

Marshall is thrilled to return to Chemainus for his third production. Set designs include All The Way Home (Electric Company), Chelsea Hotel (Firehall), Out In the Open (Green Thumb, Canadian tour), The Wizard of Oz and The Sound of Music (Footlight), and seven operas, as well as lighting and projection designs. This summer he is also designing sets for Caravan Farm Theatre. He holds an Ovation Award for Outstanding Set Design, and a degree from UBC.

KATIE MURPHY Apache Dancer

Katie is so glad to be breathing west coast air again! ALICIA MURRAY Drums

Alicia graduated in 2011 from Capilano University with her Bachelors Degree in Jazz. Since then, she has played for Glory Days in Vancouver followed by All Shook Up in Chemainus and Richmond. Alicia is excited to be back in Chemainus and playing music all summer with a talented group of people. When not in musicals, she plays for a variety bands around Vancouver and also likes playing AC/DC songs on her accordion with her banjo playing pal.

As a child, Laura grew up coming to Chemainus every summer for theatre, murals and ice cream. Select theatre credits include: Coronation Voyage (Belfry Theatre), Hello, Dolly! Shane was last in Chemainus directing A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline. After just finishing All Shook Up, Daniel is over the moon to be back for Joseph. Daniel grew up in the lower mainland and spent two years in Victoria at the Canadian College of Performing Arts. Every season has its “show stopper” – one production that is so striking and irresistible that the theatre is buzzing with work and excitement. Our summer production fits the bill; however, there’s no stopping the fun of our Broadway show.

We’re thrilled to present the incredible and much-loved Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat.

Combining the music of 25 impressive songs, a charismatic cast of actor-dancer-singers, an eye-popping set, imaginative costuming, 22 cute choir kids, and a script with no dialogue, the charming biblical tale is a must-see theatrical event for local and visiting audiences.

What makes this Tony Award-nominated musical special is its inspirational reminder of the rewards of diligent work, a positive attitude, and living without judgement. Joseph (the favourite son of Jacob) is given a coat of many colours by his father, which angers his jealous brothers who retaliate by selling him to Egyptian slaves. Despite his new hardships, Joseph embarks on a dream-inspired search for freedom, and finds a way to rise to power, eventually rediscovering his family – and a joyous reunion.

Bringing Joseph to life on stage has been a challenging adventure of its own for Director Shane Snow (A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline; Edges; The World Goes ‘Round –Jessie nomination for Best Director, Songs for a New World). “Joseph doesn’t contain a word of spoken script,” says Snow, “and to tell his life story through Webber and Rice’s potpourri of 60s-era rock ‘n’ roll, 20s-era Charleston, French ballads, Caribbean calypso, and dance-club disco required us all to work hard, stay positive, and explore new artistic territory.”

The remarkable contributions of the artistic team – Musical Director Brad L’Écuyer, Choreographer Shane Snow, and Sound Designer Robin Boxwell – create a vivid music production. The trio deliver every note and step – from Close Every Door to Any Dream Will Do and Poor, Poor Joseph – in perfect pitch, and with a punch.

A stellar roster of performers bring Joseph and his coat of many colours to life. Singing and dancing from one cue to the next is a large cast of familiar and new faces to the Chemainus Theatre Festival, including: Darren Burkett (Zebulon); Wade Gamble (Benjamin); Hal Kerbes (Jacob/Potiphar); Michel LaFleche (Show Boat, Phantom of the Opera, Once Upon a Mattress, Canadian Idol) (Simeon); Brad L’Écuyer (Naphtali); Alison MacDonald (Narrator); Jesse Martyn(Gad); Katie Murphy (Apache Dancer); Todd Noel (Reuben); Corey Payette (Issachar); Lindsay Robinson (Asher); Laura Ross (Mrs. Potiphar); Colin Sheen(Dan/Butler); Daniel James White (Judah). Joining the veteran actors are two local children’s choirs, infusing the musical with a sense of playfulness and joy.

Staging the celebrated musical, Set and Lighting Designer Marshall McMahen, Costume Designer Norma Bowen, and Stage Manager Nicole Lamb, combine their talents to transport the audience into Joseph’s world.

Producing Joseph is our own little summer “miracle”– but no divine intervention was needed to make our dream come true. Instead, we were blessed to have the vision, dedication, and hard work of our artistic and production teams, staff, sponsors, community supports, and our volunteers. While every performance on the Chemainus Theatre Festival stage is created with the same professional and committed approach, the significant input of time and attention from our team and partners to take a large-scale production from the page to the stage deserves special recognition and thanks.

It’s the early 1980s and Christmas Eve in asmall country cottage on Vancouver Island.Countryside Christmas is an originalChemainus Theatre Festival production; awarm, laughter filled holiday comedyfeaturing everyone’s favourite family, “theCornwalls”. The stage is set for a quaint family gettogether with Harry and Judy Cornwall, theirtwo children Tom and Sissy and GrandmaCornwall. Harry and Judy reminisce aboutChristmas’ past and look forward to havingtheir mother and children home to celebratethe season. There is a strong sense ofnostalgia as Judy and Harry hurriedly getthe last minute details taken care of; theturkey, the Christmas tree, music, anddecorations (mistletoe).

Although nominally a Christian holiday tocelebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, Christmashas grown to be celebrated around theworld and by an increasing number ofnon-Christians. It has also grown to includemany holiday customs including thosedepicted in Countryside Christmas; gift-giving,

music, a special meal, Christmas trees,mistletoe, and Santa Claus.

The practice of putting up special decorationsat Christmas has a long history. Frompre-Christian times, people in the RomanEmpire brought branches from evergreenplants indoors in the winter. Decoratingwith greenery was also part of Jewishtradition: Christians incorporated suchcustoms into their developing practices. Inthe 15th century, it was recorded that inLondon it was the custom at Christmas forevery house and all the parish churches tobe "decked with holm, ivy, bays, andwhatsoever the season of the year affordedto be green”.

The first specifically Christmas hymns thatwe know of appear in 4th century Romeand in the 9th and 10th centuries, theChristmas "Sequence" or "Prose" wasintroduced in North European monasteries.By the 13th century, in France, Germany,and particularly, Italy, a strong traditionof popular Christmas songs in the nativelanguage developed. Christmas carols inEnglish first appear in a 1426 work of JohnAwdlay, a Shropshire chaplain, who liststwenty-five "caroles of Cristemas", likelysung by groups of carollers, who went fromhouse to house. It wasn’t until the late 18thcentury that completely secular Christmassongs appeared; Deck the Halls dates from1784 with Jingle Bells copyrighted in 1857.Christmas dinner differs in countries around

Liza and Pal are desperate to save their farm, but getting their product to market is a problem. While his wife struggles to keep their business afloat, Pal’s bad decisions are multiplying their money woes. One final cluck would turn his exotic chickens into financial freedom, but an unusual closeness with his birds is keeping him from dropping the axe.

When Liza issues an ultimatum – only the county fair prize-winners will return to the farm – will Pal find the pluck to save their farm, or will he fly the coop on their life and dreams?

Written by Lucia Frangione, Chickens is a plucky story of the lives between two farmers and their four chickens. The rural musical comedy draws curious parallels between the couple’s relationship and the romantically-charged, or challenged, avian relationships of “Alphonso” and “Stewer”, and “His Nibs” and “Butterball”. As all the lovers face their fears and aspirations, Stewer (the former factory farm jailbird) reveals the harsh truth about life beyond the coop.

Director/choreographer Sara-Jeanne Hosie (Patsy Cline) unites snappy

dialogue and a variety of entertaining songs into a story that pulls at the heartstrings and tickles the funny-bone. The music illuminates common joys and frustrations that the humans and their flock share – proving that no matter where one takes roost, we all need a little love and compassion.

Birds of a feather will laugh together at Chickens.
