Empowering Men Through Counseling: Paint the Picture

• Painting the Picture is a powerful tool used to engage and empower men to experience positive change in the process of counseling by combining verbal and non-verbal communication which opens new pathways for learning.

• Utilizing various means to “paint the picture” in counseling (i.e., drawing, diagrams, parables, Biblical stories and characters, movies, etc.) this reduces anxiety, increase positive regard and leads to freer expression of feelings, beliefs and behavior that would normally be ignored or kept inside.

Page 23: Jose’ & Sabrina

Paint the Picture

• Using parables with familiar settings and characters, Jesus caught the attention of his audience and was able to deliver his message. Jesus connected things of the culture with things of the Kingdom.

• Movies – modern day parables – can be used to help prepare men to hear biblical truths.

• By introducing timeless truth with memorable visual images, the lessons of your counseling can have lasting impact.

Paint the Picture

• Remember that men are visual• Painting the picture allows men to visually

see what you are saying; see what they are saying; and see what God is saying.

• Painting the picture allows men to place themselves in a situation as one of the characters.

• Painting the picture allows men to be a participant, an observer and the counselor

Paint the Picture

• Thank you to the many poets, storytellers, and musicians who have served to awaken deeper parts of me that cannot be reached by logic, intellect, or propositional thinking.

Paint the Picture• Artistic ability isn't required when you paint the picture in a

counseling setting. "Anyone can make marks on paper. The results can be surprising, and the discoveries that the art provides can be illuminating.”

• For starters, it's easier to express troubled feelings through art than through talk because art allows distance. We might not be able to talk about how we feel, but we can talk about how the person that we drew feels.

• While working with images, we're also less likely to censor ourselves. We are accustomed to using words to communicate, just not about ourselves.

Biblical Stories and Counseling

• Character Studies • Ask the counselee to identify some of his

favorite Bible characters or stories.• Ask them to share the text and/or read the

scriptures in session. Paint the picture.• Ask the counselee to identify ways in

which they are like the main character and different. What lessons can they learn from their situation?
