Oxytocin and Stem Cells

Oxytocin induces differentiation of P19 embryonic stem cells to cardiomyocytes

There is a oxytocinoxytocin receptor (OTOTR) system in the heart Activation of cardiac OTR stimulates the release of atrialnatriuretic peptide (ANP) which is involved in regulation of blood pressure and cell growth

Oxytocin and Stem cells

OTOTR system plays an important role in cardiogenesis by promoting cardiomyocyte differentiation

Oxytocin levels Decline with age

The regenerative capacity of skeletal muscle declines with age Previous studies suggest that

this process can be reversed by exposure to young circulation however systemic age-specific

factors responsible for this phenomenon are largely unknown Here we report that

oxytocinmdasha hormone best known for its role in lactation parturition and social behavioursmdashis

required for proper muscle tissue regeneration and homeostasis and that plasma levels of

oxytocin decline with age

Oxytocin Signaling

Inhibition of oxytocin signalling in young animals reduces muscle

regeneration whereas systemic administration of oxytocinrapidly improves muscle

regeneration by enhancing aged muscle stem cell activationproliferation They further show that the genetic lack of

Oxytocin does not cause a developmental defect in muscle but instead leads to premature sarcopenia

Considering that oxytocin is an FDA-approved drug this work reveals a potential novel and

safe way to combat or prevent skeletal muscle ageing

Fibromyalgia and Oxytocin

Plasma oxytocin levels in female fibromyalgia syndrome

Zeitschrift fuumlrRheumatologie gt 2000 gt 59 gt 6 gt 373-379

Fibromyalgia and Oxytocin

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic pain disorder where 90 of the patients struck by the disorder are women The neuropeptide oxytocinis known to have antinociceptive and analgesic as well as anxiolytic and antidepressant effects which makes this neuropeptide of interest in fibromyalgia research The aim of this study was to assess oxytocin concentrations in female FMS patients with different hormonal status and in depressed and non-depressed patients and relate oxytocin concentrations to adverse symptoms as pain stress depression anxiety and to the positive item happiness

Fibromyalgia and oxytocin

Methods Thirty-nine patients and 30 controls registered these symptoms daily during 28 days and blood samples for the assessment of oxytocin were drawn twice in all patients and controls Besides the daily ratings depression was also estimated with the self-rating instrument Beck Depression Inventory (BDI)

Fibromyalgia and Oxytocin

Results Depressed patients according to the BDI differed significantly with low levels of oxytocincompared to the non-depressed patients and the controls Low levels of oxytocin were also seen in high scoring pain stress and depression patients according to the daily ratings however these subgroups were small A negative correlation was found between the scored symptoms depression and anxiety and oxytocinconcentration and a positive correlation between the item happiness and oxytocin

Oxytocin is Antistress

Cerebrospinal fluid and plasmatic levels of oxytocin(OT) have been found to change in mood disorders In post-mortem studies the numbers of OT-expressing neurons in the paraventricular nucleus have been reported to be increased Moreover OT is considered as an endogenous antistress hormone It has also revealed antidepressive effects OT may contribute to the dysregulation of the HPA system in major depression Results showed a significant negative correlation between oxytocin and the scored symptoms depression (r frac14 058 p frac14 0003) and anxiety (r frac14 061 p frac14 0005)

A better understanding of the neurobiology and neurogenetics of human social cognition and behavior has important implications for the current development of novel clinical approaches for mental disorders that are associated with social deficits (eg autism spectrum disorder social anxiety disorder and borderline personality disorder) This review focuses on our recent knowledge of the behavioral endocrine genetic and neural effects of OT and AVP in humans and provides a synthesis of recent advances made in the effort to implicate the oxytocinergic system in the treatment of psychopathological states
