Summer Movie Review The Bourne Ultimatum

Director: Paul Greengrass; Starring: Matt Damon, Julia Stiles, David Strathairn, Albert Finney & Joan Allen; Runtime: 111 min; Rated: PG-13 for violence and intense sequences of action The students are back, Football is in full-swing and the leaves are starting to turn. So sighing another summer gone, we present the last of the summer movie reviews. No surprise: it’s a sequel to a sequel. The Bourne Ultimatum picks up where The Bourne Supremacy ends. Jason (Damon) finds a British reporter with insider information about the gov-ernment program which transformed Jason into ruthless assassin. From there its up to Jason to follow the trail home to his true identity. Trying to stop him are CIA Deputy Director Noah Vosen (Strathhairn) and a tidal wave of assassins. Matt Damon is the epitome of cool as our man Bourne, Julia Stiles excels in her expanded role, and David Strathairn, an Oscar nominee for Good Night and Good Luck, is devilish as the CIA man we love to hate. But until the Academy starts giving statuettes for “Best Performance in a Tooth-Shattering Fight Scene,” this ain’t winnin’ any Oscars. Bourne movies are more action than acting, and Ultimatum is action. Gritty realism amplifies the heart-pounding intensity. I flinched against my seat as Bourne traded brutal blows with the assassin Desh and was all aflutter during a car chase through New York. Be warned, though - Greengrass’ directing style employs quick cuts and a lot of very shaky camera work. If you’re prone to motion sickness, it’s advisable to sit well back from the screen. The Bourne Ultimatum closes the Summer of 3’s nicely. This movie is everything a good action flick should be: it finds the perfect mix between story and action, with a little mystery and romance tossed in. Better than The Bourne Supremacy, it (seems to) conclude the Bourne Saga nicely. It gets 3½ paws: if fist-fights, crashing cars and big explosions are your thing, The Bourne Ulti-matum is worth a $10 ticket.

The World Made Straight, by Ron Rash

I recently made a discovery while doing my part to support the local economy of Pendleton. There is a new book-

store on the Square. I was pleased to find an autographed copy of The World Made Straight -- the latest offering from

Western Carolina professor and Clemson resident Ron Rash. It is the story of Travis Shelton, who is coming-of-age

in a small rural town in western North Carolina. There is an excellent summary of the book in the Libraries’ Catalog

(thanks, Steve R.!) so there’s no need for me to re-tell it here.

At the risk of appearing to be unsupportive of local talent, I must say that I have not been a huge Ron Rash fan. In

fact, I didn’t much like One Foot in Eden, which many people touted as the great American novel. But he’s growing

on me. I have learned to appreciate his expansive writing style. The characters he has created are so true to life, and as flawed as any-

one you might meet. A local Librarian plays a minor role in the story, which made it even more real for me. I tend to like stories that

are resolved at the end, with all of the loose ends neatly tied up for me. But this book does not fit into that category. Nonetheless, I

recommend it to those who like to read fiction set in our area, and those who enjoy reading about how the Civil War is still affecting

our lives today. If anyone is interested, I have transcribed the New York Times article that Mr. Rash mentions as having influenced his

story. Just let me know.

Remember! The library book sale is coming up

on Friday, September 28th. If you’re interested

in helping out, and haven’t volunteered yet, just

contact Steve Johnson! Be sure to check out the

great variety of books and other items for sale to

add to your own personal collection!
