TED TALKS
JORDAN JACKSON
Steve JobsHow To Live Before You Die
Thesis:
Find out what you love and pursue it. There is always opportunities in life’s
setbacks.
Jobs captured the audiences attention by starting off his speech in an
unorthodox manner.
“I decided to drop out and trust that it will all work out ok. It was pretty
scary at the time but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever
made.”
Jobs maintained the audiences attention by using humor and really
capitalizing on points within his personal stories.
CONNECTING THE DOTS
“You have to trust in something. Your gut, destiny, life, karma whatever. Believing that the dots will connect
down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart even when it leads you off the well worn
path and that will make all the difference.”
Some of the tips Jobs used form Nancy Duarte and Garr Reynolds was humor
and storytelling.
Jobs used the 3rd TED commandment to relay his ideas to his audience.
Dynamism Rating
I give Steve Jobs a Dynamism Rating of 3.5.
Jobs could have used better eye contact with the audience.
Jobs could have used his hands more to tell his story.
Jobs could have had more of a personality behind his voice. It was
very monotone even when he delivered the punch lines.
Sir Ken Robinson had more of a personality in his speech and he used a great deal more of humor
than Steve Jobs.
I prefer Sir Ken’s delivery style over Mr. Jobs, however they both got the point across without losing the audiences
attention.
I learned that telling a humorous personal story, but not just any
personal story. One that was very embarrassing or something you failed at just to let the audience
know what you too are human and everyone makes mistakes.
Tips for Classmates
I personally like to use humor as my main focus. Not only does it help
build rapport with my audience but when I do make a joke and the
audience laughs it gives me much more confidence to continue my
speech and keep making more jokes.
Thank you for taking the time out to read my presentation. I hope you
enjoyed it!
