What is SCAMP?
SCAMP is the fun way to say “Summer Conservation and Marine Programs”
— the summer camp at Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center in
Newburyport, Massachusetts.
At Joppa Flats Education Center, our building and backyard overlook the
salt marsh and estuary at the mouth of the Merrimack River. We are less
than 15 minutes away from a wide range of habitats, including beaches,
fields, tide pools, mudflats, and the ocean. We run SCAMP in our sunny
backyard, where we catch the summer breeze off the river, and in our
building with its air-conditioned children’s activities room.
SCAMP Leaders and Leaders-in-Training (LITs) are trained in health and
safety precautions, first aid, and camp policies. Parents of SCAMP
participants can be sure their children are not only safe, but learning while
having fun. A small child to leader ratio guarantees that children meet
positive role models who are knowledgeable, creative, enthusiastic, and
love the outdoors.
SCAMP is licensed by the Newburyport Board of Health and complies with
the regulations of the Department of Public Health for the commonwealth
of Massachusetts.
Who’s in charge at SCAMP?
Lisa Hutchings Elyssa Davis
SCAMP Director SCAMP Program Coordinator
Lisa Hutchings has 21 years of experience in children’s environmental
education and has been leading children’s programs at Joppa Flats since
2005. In 2010, Elyssa Davis was one of the leaders in Joppa Flats’ first
summer program. Since then, Lisa and Elyssa have collaborated to
expand Joppa Flats educational offerings to include an increased
number of school visits and more extensive homeschool and family
programs. With backgrounds in marine and conservation biology, they
are excited to welcome you and your children to a special place where
the outdoors is the main event.
SCAMP Leaders (college age and beyond) and LITs (ages 14-17) are
specially selected for their background in science and for their skill and
experience working with children. Their shared interests and energies
create a welcoming team atmosphere that encourages enthusiastic
participation.
Come learn more about your favorite animals and
coastal habitats at SCAMP!
EXPLORERS
Ages 6-8, entering grades 1 to 3
9:30 am to 1:30 pm
Is your child always bringing home bugs and frogs? Has your
living room ever been transformed into the deep sea? SCAMP
Explorers is the perfect place for younger scientists with an
interest and curiosity about the world around them. Your child
will learn why local coastal habitats and backyard critters are
important as we study them via hands-on-science, live
animals, fun games, and arts and crafts.
INVESTIGATORS
Ages 9-11, entering grades 4 to 6
9:30 am to 3:30 pm
If your older child loves marine biology or backyard
exploration, then SCAMP will take him or her to new levels of
information and discovery. As Investigators, children will learn
about the importance of our natural habitats and conservation
efforts. Using group activities and real science experiments,
they’ll discover the relationships of native and invasive species
and explore and play out the roles of several environmental
science careers.

What is Mass Audubon?
Mass Audubon works to protect the nature of Massachusetts for
people and wildlife. Together with more than 100,000
members, Mass Audubon cares for 34,000 acres of conservation
land, provides educational programs for 225,000 children and
adults annually, and advocates for sound environmental
policies at local, state, and federal levels.
Mass Audubon's mission and actions have expanded since its
beginning in 1896 when its founders set out to stop the
slaughter of birds for use on women's fashions.
Today Mass Audubon is the largest conservation organization
in New England. Its statewide network of wildlife sanctuaries,
in 90 Massachusetts communities, welcomes visitors of all ages
and serves as the base for its work.
