Dear PPAGLA members:
It was a pleasant surprise and a great honor to be named the 2009 Press Photographers Association of Greater Los Angeles Student Photographer of the Year. I am sure there were many talented and hard working students from Los Angeles also deserving of this prestigious award.
Thank you to all the Past Presidents and retired mem-bers who contributed the cash award. Thank you to Sara Moosbrugger, Nikon NPS for donating the camera.
The prize money will go a
long way towards my career goals. Now that I work for The Denver Post, a Nikon newspa-per, the D300s is exactly what I need.
I am very proud to be part of this organization and look forward to competing in the professional categories in the years to come.
Again, this is a great honor and thank you so much for supporting young photojour-nalists.
Sincerely,
Diego James RoblesStaff PhotographerThe Denver Post

New legal advisor for PPAGLABy Bob riha jr.PPAGLA President
The PPAGLA Board of Directors is pleased to announce that First Amendment and media attorney Jean-Paul Jassy, Bostwick & Jassy,
LLP, will be available to advise PPAGLA on legal/First Amendment issues that may arise. Cases will be handled on a case-by-case basis where legal consultation and guidance is requested. “I am honored to represent PPAGLA on general advice matters,” Jassy said.
In addition, Jassy has also been repre-senting PPAGLA’s interests regarding the upcoming new Los Angeles Police Depart-ment’s Media Identification Policy, which will begin in 2011 and announced in upcom-ing JOM Jr. and PPAGLA website.
Jean-Paul Jassy is an experienced litiga-tor at all levels, ranging from document-intensive, multi-million dollar business disputes to free speech and free press cases before the United States Supreme Court and the Supreme Court of California. For more than a decade, Jean-Paul typically has repre-sented media and entertainment companies with free press, free speech and copyright concerns. He also has extensive experience representing small, mid-sized and large com-panies in business disputes and appeals.
The publishers of Los Angeles Magazine and Law & Politics call Jean-Paul “one of the top First Amendment and media at-torneys” in Southern California, and, for the
fifth consecutive year, have recognized him as a “Rising Star” — a peer-reviewed honor given to only 2.5 percent of attorneys in Southern California — in the fields of First Amendment/media/advertising law, general litigation and appellate law.
Jassy’s work has been discussed in American Lawyer, California Lawyer, Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Daily Journal and many other publications. He is often called upon to offer expert commentary on First Amendment and media law issues.
“Our Association is very fortunate to have access to Jean-Paul Jassy and his first-class knowledge of First Amendment-related issues,” says John McCoy, PPAGLA Chairman of the Board and past-president. “He will bring an added level of integrity to our board of directors and association as a whole. When our members feel their First Amendment rights have been trampled, I hope they will contact Mr. Jassy,” McCoy said.
Jassy has served as an adjunct profes-sor of law at the University of Southern California Law School (teaching Constitu-tional Law II – First Amendment law) and at Southwestern University Law School (teaching a course on the law of defamation, privacy and publicity). He also served for four years as a regular course instructor at UCLA Extension teaching legal and ethical issues in journalism, a required course for a journalism certificate.
Jean-Paul has authored many articles on First Amendment, privacy and copyright is-
sues, including a law review article concern-ing secret recordings that he co-authored with Gary Bostwick (Flanagan’s Wake: Newsgatherers Navigate Uncertain Waters Following Flanagan v. Flanagan, 23 Loyola of Los Angeles Entertainment Law Review 1 — 2002).
Jassy is co-chair of the California Chapter of the Media Law Resource Center (MLRC), a non-profit information clearinghouse that monitors developments in media law and First Amendment rights, and he is member-ship chair of the American Bar Association’s Forum on Communications Law, a national committee with more than 6,000 members focusing on legal counseling to traditional and electronic media and the telecommuni-cations industry.
He received a J.D. from the University of Southern California Law School, where he was Chair of the Hale Moot Court Honors Program, and he has a B.A., with highest honors, in political science from the Univer-sity of California, Berkeley.
Jassy can be reached at: [email protected]
Welcome aboard Jean-Paul!
Sincerely,
Bob Riha, Jr.President, PPAGLA

The first couple weeks in Iraq have gone by swimmingly. It took us a little bit of time for us to find a place to live, but we eventually settled in to two rooms that we are renting from an American-operated logistics company. It’s a pretty sweet deal actually — the town’s internet tower is on the roof, so we get free high speed internet. The “villa” also has daily maid service and a generator that provides us with electricity
24 hours a day. We definitely aren’t roughing it on this trip to Iraq!
The best-selling point on this apartment though was a bomb-sniffing, English Spaniel named Sam. This adorable brown-and-white dog is every-one’s friend. He spends most of his time sitting on your foot or perched up against your leg — that is until you give him an empty water bottle that will drive him absolutely crazy.
He gave us quite a scare the other day when he ran away though while out on a walk. He had gotten punished earlier for having an accident in the house and he is such an emotional dog that I think it went to his head. As soon as his owner looked away, he bolted. It took two days of almost constant searching before we found him. Someone called respond-ing to a sign we posted in the neighborhood and varying sto-
ries finally led us to him tied to a tree in someone’s driveway.
People can get up to $500 for a dog like that in this region and most people thought he was picked up to be sold. Luckily, we got him back for a $100 reward (they tried to get $150 saying that they bought him a chicken).
We are all very happy to have him back.
