ABSTRACTThe neutral interstellarmedium (ISM) is a vital player in the star formation process,basedon itsmajorcontribution to the ISM'smass,andbears thebruntof the stellarfeedback. Inparticular, thediffuse ISM isnotonly the key forbuilding seeds for starformation–interstellarmolecules–italsoshieldsmoleculesfromtheharsheffectsofstellar feedbackandthereforedeterminesthedurationof theirsurvival.AsnumericalsimulationsofgalaxyevolutioncontinuetoincludemorecomplexISMphysics,detailedunderstanding and inclusion of key sources of stellar feedback and the exact effectstheyhaveonthediffuseISMareessential.Inthistalk,Iwillhighlightseveralkeyresultsfromrecentneutralhydrogensurveysofthe Milky Way and nearby galaxies, specifically focusing on the neutral gasthermodynamics, transition from atomic to molecular medium, and interstellarturbulence. Current and upcoming observations of the neutral ISM with new radiotelescopes, such as ASKAP, MeerKAT, ngVLA, SKA, promise great observationaladvancesandtheability toguidenumericalsimulationsofstar formationandgalaxyevolution.
