October 2019 JOIN US TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL 4-H WEEK! The anticipation is building for National 4-H Week, when the 4-H community of over 6 million young people, 500,000 volunteers and 3,500 4-H professionals will celebrate America’s largest youth organization by showcasing the incredible work that they do each and every day to make a positive impact on those around them. The theme of this year’s National 4-H Week, which takes place from October 6 – 12, is Inspire Kids to Do! This theme highlights how 4-H encourages kids to take part in hands-on learning experiences in areas such as health, science, agriculture and civic engagement. The positive environment provided by 4-H mentors ensures that kids in every county and parish in the country from urban neighborhoods to suburban schoolyards to rural farming communities are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles and are empowered with the skills to lead in life and career. During National 4-H week we encourage all 4-H members to wear your 4-H shirts and help spread the 4-H spirit in your schools and community. 3525 Conowingo Rd Suite 600 Street, Md 21154 410-638-3255 extension.umd.edu/harford-county/4-h-youth My name is Marylisa Schaedel. I was born and raised in Bel Air and have been involved with the Harford County 4-H Program since I was 8 years old. During my time as a 4-Her, I showed all types of livestock and entered many baking and food preservation projects. After graduating from C Milton Wright High School, I earned a BS degree in Small Animal Science from Delaware Valley University. After college, I returned to Harford County along with my husband and we have raised our two daughters in the North Harford area. I spent a few years in the biomedical research field focusing on cancer therapeutics and vaccine safety. I have also worked and volunteered extensively with Harford County Public Schools. I have been an active 4-H volunteer, Club Leader, and Sheep Superintendent for over 10 years. It has been wonderful watching my daughters participate in the 4-H program as I did so many years ago. I am looking forward to this next chapter of my 4-H experience and I am excited to be working with the Harford County 4-H program! HELP US WELCOME OUR NEW 4-H PROGRAM ASSISTANT

MARYLAND 4-H WELCOMES OUR NEW MARYLAND 4-H PROGRAM LEADER

The Maryland 4-H Volunteers’ Association Adult & Teen Regional Volunteer Forum is a new twist on our popular conference in Ocean City each November. This year will be a single day conference held in four separate locations, with each location offering the same classes! All 4-H volunteers, parents and senior 4-H members are invited to participate.

Participants will gather with others from across their region to collaborate, educate and inspire one another to strengthen leadership skills with new ideas, new projects and new goals. A variety of classes will be offered, which will be duplicated at each location.

Registration will open soon through 4HOnline.

Nia Imani Fields, Ed.D. Maryland 4-H Program Leader and Assistant Director of Extension, joined the University of Maryland Extension, in 2006. Her doctorate is in Urban Educational Leadership. Some of her research focuses on 4-H's contribution to social capital and the implications for social justice. Throughout her educational and professional career, her focus has been to work towards the positive development of children, youth, families and communities. She has created and coordinated several youth and community programs and initiatives within New York, Delaware and Maryland while working with organizations such as Civic Works/Americorps and the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks. Practices will be held weekly on Tuesdays at 6:00 pm at the Extension Office. For more information, contact Mindy Sather at [email protected]. The contest is usually held early March.

The Livestock Skillathon contest is open to any 4-H member ages 8 – 18 who are interested in learning about the livestock industry. You do not need to own or lease an animal to participate. The contest and practices will cover many areas of the industry including; breed identification, hay and wool

judging, feed identification, meat judging and identification, and much more.

The 4-H office will hold a record book and portfolio workshop on November 15, 2019 from 6:30 – 9:00 at the 4-H office. If this is your first time come out and learn about how to complete a record book. For our experienced members bring your record book with you to get suggestions on how to make it even better. All 4-H members are expected to submit a record book or portfolio each year to participate in the county fair.

Record books / Portfolios are an opportunity for 4-H members to reflect on their 4-H year and to begin setting goals for the upcoming year. Completing a record book provides many opportunities, such as:

- Fulfilling requirements to show at the Harford County Farm Fair

- Providing a full record of your 4-H and community service in one place (this is very helpful when you begin considering college and scholarship applications)

- The opportunity to receive county level awards for your project completions

- Senior portfolios are used to apply for out of state leadership trips (i.e. National 4-H Congress, Camp Miniwanca, and more)

The 4-H Interstate Exchange Program has a long history of providing youth and adults with opportunities to travel and host youth from different states. This program is for youth ages 14 and older and is a two year commitment. Our Exchange Program has matched with Washtenaw,

Michigan and we are looking for a few more youth to join our group! Tentative plans are that we will host in 2020 and travel in 2021. Participating members will work

with Exchange Coordinators to build an itinerary that shows what our state is all about. The interstate exchange project is designed to help youth:

- Learn more about themselves and their own family, friends, county, and state

- Learn to help plan and conduct fundraising projects to pay expenses for the trip and for hosting

- Learn to be a good host or hostess - Create new and lasting friendships - Learn more about 4-H in other states - Have fun as a member of a 4-H exchange

If you are interested or need more information, please contact Jessica Jager (443-307-3686 or [email protected]) or Carrie Patrick (443-504-9485 or [email protected]).
