CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEAS

Please bring Giving

Tree gifts to church by

Dec. 2, unwrapped

with the tag securely

attached.

Some of the gifts on

the tree are for the

Angel Tree project for

children of incarcer-

ated parents. You are

doing more than

providing a toy for a child in need, you are working to

prevent the next generation of children from entering the

criminal justice system through Reach, Inspire, Support

and Encourage (R.I.S.E) NKY Mentoring.

R.I.S.E. Mentoring serves Northern Kentucky through indi-

viduals, churches, and businesses working with kids to

give them hope in Jesus name. This is a new ministry

launching on Jan. 18th and you are invited to learn more

about this partnership ministry and about possibly be-

coming a mentor to one of these kids. Our mentoring

program will begin as a fun-filled monthly group-only

activity for the first three months in 2019.

By the end of March we hope to make "matches" be-

tween mentors and our Angel Tree Children. Our goal is

to have all 151 children in our program matched for 1-on

-1 mentoring by the end of 2019. Mentors participate in

a minimum of one fun-filled group activity that Council of

Christian Re-Entry Ministry (CCRM-Jerry & Kim Wallace)

will host and one additional mentoring engagement per

month. Meeting to mentor more often would be awe-

some, but the program minimum standard commitment

for mentors is committing to two 90 minute engage-

ments monthly and successfully passing a background

check. If you have a question about this please contact

Jerry Wallace (513) 302-5012 or email: Jer-

[email protected].

6:15 PM

Join us on Friday, December 7 as the Discover Zone Pre-

school and Pre-Kindergarten classes share with us the

true meaning of Christmas with a special Christmas pro-

gram called, “Jesus: Light of the World.” Dear Church family:

“Count your many blessings; name them one by one and

see what God has done.”

You are an incredible congregation of disciples of Jesus

Christ, sharing God’s love in amazing ways with one an-

other, with our community and our world. It is a blessing

to stand with you as you let others far and near know

that faith and discipleship matter!

Another blessing is the amazing staff of Florence Chris-

tian Church. These folks give so much of themselves to

our church’s mission and ministry. Individually and col-

lectively, they multiply our efforts on behalf of God and

allow us to do more than we ever dreamed possible. I

know you join me in giving thanks for them as they make

significant contributions to Florence Christian Church.

To affirm our staff and tell them how much we thank God

for their valued ministries, please join me in making a

special love gift to them this Christmas season. For the

next two Sundays (Dec. 2 and Dec. 9), we will receive a

free will offering for our staff. Please designate your

check “staff love offering” so we ensure the gift reaches

those for whom it is intended.

God did a wonderful job with time!

Every 24 hours, we get a new day!

Sunday marks the beginning of a new

week. It’s December—in a few days,

we have a whole new year. Let’s take

this month to ponder this new

beginning. Positive change is about

prioritizing what’s important. What

does that mean in terms of health and

wellness?

LiveWell Northern KY is a partnership

of Northern Kentucky Health

Department, St. Elizabeth Healthcare,

and Center for Great Neighborhoods.

LiveWell Florence is a collaboration of

individuals and community agencies

with 3 priorities:

Active Living—Promote physical

activity in our neighborhoods, to

improve the overall health of the

community.

Healthy Eating—Increase access &

awareness through food

distribution events, promotion of

produce distributions, farmer’s

markets, and cooking classes.

Tobacco Free—Encourage residents

and businesses toward clean,

healthy air environment.

When LiveWell Florence contacted

Florence Christian and invited us to

have a seat at the table, I was excited

to participate by sitting on both the

Steering Committee and the Healthy

Eating Committee. The Healthy Eating

Committee has facilitated the monthly

produce distribution in our Activity

Center. We have provided fresh

produce for Arcadia residents, Discover

Zone families, our Boy Scout Troup

families, community families, some of

our Shower Ministry guests, and the

Helping Hearts. Produce comes from

Kroger via the FreeStore FoodBank.

The UK Extension nutrition specialists

bring recipes to share with folks

receiving produce. Also, in the past 2

months, they have shared produce

with families at their nutrition class at

Collins Elementary.

What does this have to do with our

pondering the new year and setting

health and wellness priorities as

individuals and families? LiveWell

Florence is a small group with three

clear priorities. Healthy Eating is just

one of them; our produce distribution

is one aspect of many activities.

Starting small, this project has grown in

scope and service to have a great

impact. Clearly, much can be

accomplished starting small with one

clear priority. Each of us can set a

priority and take small steps to have a

big impact. Start by assessing where

you are now. Use SMART (specific,

measurable, attainable, realistic, time

specific) goals. For example, you want

to improve your nutrition. You go to

www.choosemyplate.gov and see that

according to the table for your age and

activity level, you should have 6 one-

half servings of vegetables each day.

You write down all your vegetables for

3 days and find that Day 1 you had a

big salad for lunch for 4 one-half cup

servings and chili for supper with lots

of meat and pasta but only about a

tablespoon of veggies. Day 2 you had

two ½ cup servings of vegetables, and

Day 3 you had 4 servings. So your

SMART goal is:

SPECIFIC - Increase vegetable servings

to 6 each day.

MEASUREABLE - Keep a log of one-half

cup servings vegetables eaten.

ATTAINABLE - This is doable if you

look at current habits. On Day 1

you could have made your goal by

adding a cup of veggie sticks to

your chili supper.

REALISTIC - Very realistic!

TIME LIMITED - Let’s make this change

over the next 8 weeks. Give

yourself 3 weeks to hit your goal

every day and 5 weeks of

consistency to say you’ve done it.

Time to set a new goal—fruits?

What will your goal be to make your

2019 a new beginning?

LiveWell Florence is looking for

Florence residents who are interested

in helping our community make

healthy choices. The time commitment

is not big, the results are exciting.

Interested? Call Phyllis at 859-620-

9646.

Children Worship & Wonder, Sundays, 9 AM Ages 4-8, 10:30 AM – Ages 4-6

The Children Worship & Wonder worship experience is designed for younger children,

influenced by Montessori ideas, and it creates a welcoming environment to grow in relationship

with God through ritual and storytelling. Children leave the sanctuary after the children’s

blessing and are escorted to the Children’s Worship Center in the atrium. Parents reunite with

their children after the close of worship outside the Children’s Worship Center in the atrium.

as in “Big Church” and provides children ways to interactively engage with the scripture

lesson. Children leave the sanctuary during the children’s blessing and are escorted to

the small conference room. After the conclusion of their activities, they are escorted back

into the sanctuary to rejoin their families for communion

Sunday worship is when all of us gather as the people of

God to praise God, to connect with God and each other.

At Florence Christian Church we encourage children to

begin worship in the sanctuary with their families. After the

music and opening prayer in a Children’s Blessing, one of

the Pastors and the congregation bless the children to

continue their worship in developmentally appropriate

environments. Special worship activities for children are

also available during both worship services.

Nursery Care: If you have a little one, nursery care is

available at each service, so please make the choice that

best fits the needs of your family.

As always, children are welcome to worship in the

Sanctuary for the entirety of worship with their

families. We welcome their wiggles and giggles, cries

and coos! They are beloved members of the family of

God.

NEW Following Jesus, Sundays at 10:30 AM, Ages 6-8 The Following Jesus worship experience is similar in format to Worship & Wonder where a

special and welcoming environment is created. Children hear the sacred stories of Jesus based

on the Gospel of Mark. Children leave the sanctuary during the children’s blessing and are

escorted to the Chapel. Parents reunite with their children after the close of worship outside

the Chapel.
