Reflections from Rabbi . . . Mahsah Nahfshi

Anshai Torah Family Adventure to Israel — June 16-27, 2013

Please join us in the for an information meeting

Wednesday, May 9, 7:30 p.m. in the social hall.

Dear Sharyn and Liz, The strength of every synagogue is defined by the quality of its volunteers. You two represent the very best our community at Anshai Torah has to offer. We are so very appreciative of all that you brought to fruition through your dedication to Mahsah Nahfshi, the journey of spiritual healing. I want to thank you for the leadership you demonstrated in association with Mahsah Nahfshi. For the duration of four years you guided this program with love, dedication, professionalism, and a tremendous amount of tender loving care. This was your project, and every month you found the energy to organize another session. These sessions continually focused on techniques, concepts and ideas that were used by few others. The setting of Mahsah Nahfshi provided a very special opportunity for a number of people to experiment with approaches that would offer relief or support for those facing difficult times. You made our synagogue life that much more nuanced because of your ability to address the needs of those who felt they needed something different. On behalf of the extended community of Anshai Torah, I thank you for your willingness to pursue this journey with such passion. I regret that the journey of Mahsah Nahfshi has come to a halt. I hope someone from the congregation will recognize the opportunity and need for such an alternative place of heal-ing in our congregation and continue the exciting initiative you introduced and maintained. Thank you very much for all of your time and effort. Every month you found the energy to refocus your attention on another chapter of Mahsah Nahfshi. Thank you for your level of dedication and thank you on behalf of all those whose lives were touched by your willingness to coordinate this program.

I look forward to seeing you both in the very near future.

Rabbi Stefan J. Weinberg

P AGE 3 IYAR-SIV AN 5772 — M AY 2012

President’s Perception. . .

For the past few months, members of Anshai Torah have been meeting to take steps to create and develop the first Jewish-only cemetery in Collin County. The first step in this process became a reality on March 20, 2012 with the legal formation of the Jewish Cemetery of North Texas Corporation. This 501(c)13 tax-exempt corporation, initially led by Andy Cohen as President, Warren Rubin as Treasurer, and Stuart Rosenfield as Secretary, will continue this proc-ess by locating land in far north Collin County, easily accessible by either Preston Road or future Tollway access and within a 30-minute drive from the shul. In addition to the initial officers listed above, the following committee members have been instrumental in bringing us to this point in the cemetery's creation: Hal Babitch, Phil Balis, Janet Behringer, Harry Benson, Carl Goodman, Sonia Goodman, Phil Leibowitz, Fred Rabinowitz, Bonnie Rubinstein, Jerry Schechter, Harvey Swento, Rabbi Stefan Weinberg.

Burial at the cemetery will be available to any Jewish person. A separate section will be established for non-Jewish spouses. Space will also be made available to other Jewish congregations. Final plot pricing and other details will be communicated as they become available. While we are many months from actual groundbreaking and land develop-ment and have not yet formally named our property, the Corporation has begun to accept fully refundable $500 deposits for plots. Checks should be made payable to the Jewish Cemetery of North Texas and sent to the shul office c/o Harvey Swento. Should you have any questions, feel free to contact Harvey or anyone listed above.

Membership Notes ~~ We hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful Passover with family and friends! As the school year winds down, we would like to invite all of you, our members, to a Membership Appreciation Oneg Shabbat reception on Friday, May 18, af-ter the 6:30 p.m. Kabbalat Shabbat service. . .around 7:40p.m., in the Haymann Foyer. We will enjoy some delicious treats and have an opportunity to visit with each other at the Oneg. If you are running late, please come whenever you can. For those who get hungry early, may we suggest an early dinner before services? The Oneg will end around 8:30 p.m. so that those who have not had dinner can get home; or perhaps you will invite other members to join you after the Oneg for a late Shabbat dinner, family games night, or other activity. This is a great time to make plans with old friends and/or get to know new friends at the shul. Please mark your calendars now and plan to join us! We are always excited to welcome new members—please bring prospective member families to shul and/or the Oneg and introduce them to us and/or pass on their contact information to the shul office or Membership Chairs.

Want to make new connections at Anshai Torah?

Anshai Torah is once again forming Chaverim for those who are interested. The Chaverim are groups of families or individuals who gather on some regular basis to socialize, support each other, and sometimes learn together. Each group determines its own course. Some go to services regularly and share meals afterwards. Others gather at whatever time works for their group. We have recently launched a group of six families and have other families who have not yet been matched. If you are interested in being included in one of the Chaverim, please contact Elizabeth Satz at [email protected].

Religious School . . . education and enrichment

How time flies when you are having fun learning. . .It’s hard to believe that another year in Religious School is almost complete. Our year got off to a great start in August with our annual Religious School camp attended by 20 students followed by our back-to-school open house and carnival. Without hesitation, I can say that from the very beginning, this has been very successful and rewarding year for the students of Congregation Anshai Torah. With the hard work of our dedicated faculty, we continue to create a Jewish learning environment filled with excitement and celebration not only for the students but for the whole family. With the participation and cooperation of our parents, we have achieved many of our goals which enabled our students to experience the richness of their Jewish heritage. One of the highlights of this year has been our family education programs for Kindergarten through the sixth grade. Thanks to so many people at the shul, our school continues to evolve in a most positive way. I want to thank the offi-cers and board of directors for making Jewish education a priority at Anshai Torah and to Rabbi Weinberg for all of his guidance and dedication to the Jewish Education of our children. I especially want to thank our president, Andy Cohen, for all that he has done to help foster the growth of Jewish education at the shul. A special ‘thank you’ to our Religious School co-chairs Alisa Makler and Elisa Goldstein and the Religious School committee, who were a big part of our successes this past year. I could not have done it without your dedication and assistance. Many thanks to all of my co-workers who were always there to lend a helping hand. The real success of our program is directly attributed to the dedication of our teachers. To my faculty, let me just say that I greatly appreciate your hard work, patience, and commitment to our students and to their Jewish education. Last, but certainly not least, I want to thank the parents of Anshai Torah for allowing us the opportunity to be a part of your child’s Jewish education. I look forward to seeing all of our children and their parents in the fall.

Preschool. . .a great beginning

The children at Anshai Torah Preschool have a connection to the Land of Israel that grows stronger each day. We don't wait for Yom HaAtzmaut to begin this special relationship. Every day, there are multiple opportunities to enrich our connection in a meaningful way. When we say the Shema, prepare for the Jewish holidays and learn from our friends who have lived or visit friends and family living in Israel, we continue to add links to our connection. Using iPad technology, we have the ability to explore everyday life, special events and the way holidays are cele-brated in Israel. Through this wonderful tool, we are able to send messages which deepen the understanding of life in another country. We also send messages of the importance of the Land of Israel through the use of books, photo-graphs, maps and the flag of Israel, which are intentionally part of the fabric of our classroom. By the time when we reach Yom HaAtzmaut (Israel's Birthday) in the school year, Israel is not a foreign place to us. We have sent off and welcomed home our peers from their trips there; we understand that there are many similarities in the way we learn and celebrate; we have planted trees and given our Tzedakah money; and most importantly, we have planted the seeds for a lifelong love and relationship with Eretz Yisrael. We hope and pray that every child will have the opportunity to experience all that Israel is and has to offer. Join us Friday, May 11, for our Mother's Day Shabbat — 9:15 a.m. in the Main Sanctuary Join us Friday, May 11, at 5:45 p.m. for our Early Childhood Lag B'Omer & Tot Shabbat Hot Dog Dinner .
