2019

Preamble Every school is obliged to adopt a Code of Conduct “aimed at establishing a disciplined and purposeful environment, to facilitate effective education and learning in schools”. Every school must ensure that there is “order and discipline in the school”. All learners accepted and enrolled by the School are expected to be familiar with the Code of Conduct, and to obey it. Mission Statement of John Wesley School. The John Wesley School, as a ministry of the Pinetown Methodist Church to the general community and the disadvantaged through the Bursary Fund, will strive to provide excellent and broad based education in a Christian environment.

It is committed to laying sound foundations to ensure that the child’s potential to become a mature, creative citizen and leader of the future will be fully realised.

As an essential part of its programme, the School will encourage parents, individually and collectively, to share greater responsibility for their children’s education. General Principles

1. Learners are expected at all times to behave in a courteous and considerate manner towards each other, all members of staff and visitors to John Wesley School.

2. Learners are expected to abide by the school rules with regard to appearance and behaviour when representing John Wesley School, both during school hours and after school hours, at school and away from school. Learners may not say or do anything that will discredit themselves or John Wesley School.

3. No learner has the right at any time to behave in a manner that will disrupt the learning activity of other learners, or will cause another learner physical or emotional harm.

4. The school will contact parents / guardians when a learner’s behaviour becomes a cause for concern and will endeavour, in a spirit of constructive partnership, to resolve the problem.

The Code of Conduct 1 Attendance

Each learner shall 1.1 unless excused, attend school during prescribed hours. 1.2 unless excused, (and does not have any outstanding school fees) attend

excursions and any other prescribed school activities.

1.3 attend excursions and other prescribed school activities only at the discretion of the Principal (if there has been any contravention of the school’s Code of Conduct by the learner, as listed in the Blue Card Discipline Action List).

1.4 arrive before the official starting time. Learners who are late for school will be marked absent as registers are completed at the beginning of the day.

1.5 produce an absentee note from a parent/guardian to explain absence from school. 1.6 produce a letter from a medical doctor, should they be absent from school for a

period of (3) days or longer. 1.7 produce a letter from a medical doctor, should they be absent from school during

formal examinations or tests. 1.8 not leave the school during school hours without a letter from a parent / guardian,

addressed to the Principal/Deputy Principal, requesting the release of their child.

2 Assembly Attendance is compulsory and silence shall be maintained going to, and whilst leaving assembly. During assembly talking is not permitted. No whistling, booing or screaming shall be allowed whilst applauding. No food or drink is permitted in assembly.

3 Classroom Rules 3.1 Learners shall obey all reasonable classroom regulations including complying

with homework instructions and ensuring that appropriate books and stationery are at hand.

3.2 Learners shall not ; 3.2.1 eat during lessons; 3.2.2 chew gum whilst in school uniform and/or whilst on school premises; 3.2.3 leave the class without the educator’s consent.

4 Dress Code and General Appearance

4.1 The correct school uniform shall be worn at all times (see Annexure A). No additions to the uniform that are not in accordance with the regulations will be allowed.

4.2 The school uniform is to be kept neat and clean and is to be correctly worn. 4.3 Only one small gold or silver stud per ear may be worn. This must be worn on

the earlobe only and by girls only. 4.4 No other jewellery except for wrist watches may be worn. 4.5 A single item of religious / cultural insignia, only to be worn on the wrist, is

permitted. 4.6 Nail varnish and lip gloss are not allowed. 4.7 Coloured contact lenses or visible tattoos are not allowed. 4.8 During events that allow the wearing of casual clothing, learners should be neat

and presentable. Beachwear, high-heels, tight - fitting clothes, excessively short skirts, clothes that are see - through and / or too revealing are not allowed.

5. Hair 5.1 GIRLS:

5.1.1 Hair must be kept off the face. 5.1.2 Hair must be uniform in length, clean, combed and neat. No fancy haircuts and/or hairstyles are allowed. 5.1.3 Hair that touches the shoulders must be plaited and / or tied back. 5.1.4 No extensions, wool or dreadlocks are allowed. 5.1.5 No dyeing, tinting or peroxiding of hair. 5.1.6 Hair accessories may only be red, white or black.

5.2 BOYS:

5.2.1 Hair must be short, uniform in length, clean, combed and neat. No fancy haircuts and / or hairstyles are allowed i.e. decorative lines cut into the hair.

5.2.2 No plaiting, braiding, extensions or dreadlocks are allowed. 5.2.3 No dyeing, tinting or peroxiding of hair. 5.2.4 No hair accessories are allowed. 5.2.5 Excessive facial hair (Beards / Moustaches) is not permitted.

6. Care of School Property and Facilities

6.1 Littering is not permitted. All litter must be placed in refuse bins. 6.2 Buildings, fittings and property of the school shall be used only for the purpose

for which they are intended and shall not be misused in any way. 6.3 Water and electricity are to be conserved.

7. Right to Learn

No learner shall 7.1 mock or make fun of another learner. 7.2 talk out of turn. 7.3 cause a disturbance. 7.4 be disruptive. 7.5 interfere in any way with the right of any learner to be educated. 7.6 be insolent. 7.7 be loud and offensive. 7.8 touch, interfere with, take or hide another learner’s possessions.

8. Safety Regulations

Learners are to comply with all the safety regulations as set down by the School Principal and as may be amended from time to time. 8.1 Learners shall report accidents / injuries they are either involved in or witness to,

to the first available staff member as soon as possible. 8.2 All suspicious and / or foreign objects are to be left alone and their presence and

location reported to a staff member immediately. 8.3 No learner may sit on top of staircase walls or climb on the roof of any building or

through or over any fences. 8.4 Learners shall not run or eat in the corridors/passages. 8.5 Learners shall not play with tops, balls, skateboards, heelies or bicycles on the

corridors / passages. 8.6 Learners shall not sit on pavements at any time. 8.7 Learners are to walk in single file along the corridors and on the stairs. 8.8 Learners may not enter the car park unless on official business or accompanied

by an adult.

8.9 Learners may not be in the vicinity of the perimeter of the school grounds during

school breaks. 8.10 The swimming pool area is out of bounds to all learners, unless accompanied by

a designated teacher. 8.11 When in the swimming pool, learners must behave sensibly at all times and obey the Swimming Pool Rules. 8.12 Learners may not sell any items for private gain, on the school property, outside the school or on public transport, when in school uniform. 8.13 Learners may not walk or run in the flower beds or on the banks.

9. Out of Bounds Area

9.1 Classrooms during the breaks. 9.2 Classrooms during the assembly. 9.3 The area outside the staffroom during breaks. 9.4 The Staffroom. 9.5 Staff toilets. 9.6 Principal’s office unless invited in. OUT OF BOUNDS AREAS The following areas of the school are “OUT OF BOUNDS” to all John Wesley School learners.

The following areas are “OUT OF BOUNDS” at ALL TIMES to ALL John Wesley learners UNLESS accompanied by a Staff member.

Area behind 7Z & 7M classrooms and Library/Staff Workroom.

Area in front of the Grade 5 & 6 classrooms.

The area along “Paige Place” School Boundary.

The “island” and car park area.

Pre-primary area – except for Pre-primary and Aftercare children.

The bottom field and bush.

The stairways – behind the Hall, at back of the main school building, Grade 5 & 6 classrooms emergency stairs.

Laundry and area outside the Staff Room. Learners may not loiter in the passage near Tuck Shop.

Classrooms unless a Staff member is present.

Swimming pool area and Combi Court, unless accompanied by a designated teacher.

The school motor vehicle garage.

Electrical mains distribution boxes, fire extinguishers and hoses.

Any food outlet or shop within the proximity of the school, when in school uniform.

10. Respect

10.1 Learners are to show respect for each other, educators, other staff of the school and visitors.

10.2 Learners will respect the beliefs, culture, dignity and rights of other learners, as well as their right to privacy and confidentiality.

10.3 Kissing, holding hands or any inappropriate physical contact / behaviour between learners is prohibited on the school premises, outside the school premises or whilst in school uniform.

10.4 Harassment of any kind shall not be permitted. Any act that belittles, demeans or humiliates another learner’s culture, race or religion is prohibited.

10.5 Language which is deemed to be pejorative, discriminatory or racist is prohibited. 10.6 Lending or borrowing of money is strictly prohibited.

11. Extra-curricular Programme

Each learner shall maintain uncompromising standards of moral and social conduct in public whether in school attire or not. All learners are expected to become actively involved in at least one sport or cultural and / or service activity per term. 11.1 The learner is expected to adopt the correct etiquette pertaining to the specific

activity at all times. 11.2 Once a learner has committed him/herself to an activity, he / she will be bound by

the rules and obligations related to that activity. 11.3 Involvement in a particular activity will span the entire season/duration in which

the activity takes place. Once learners have chosen an activity in which to participate, they are expected to remain committed to that activity for the entire term.

11.4 Attendance at practices is compulsory. Learners who miss practices without a valid excuse will not be permitted to participate in inter – school fixtures.

11.5 Appropriate kit / uniform must be worn at practices. 11.6 The correct match kit / uniform is to be worn at all inter – school fixtures. 11.7 Sports and other kit must be carried in an appropriate bag.

12. Physical and Verbal Abuse

12.1 Assault or violence of any form is prohibited. 12.2 Bullying, teasing, swearing, blasphemy, intimidation and victimisation are

prohibited. 12.3 Possession of any dangerous weapon or any object that can cause physical

harm by any learner is prohibited.

13. Criminal or Anti-Social Activity

13.1 No criminal or anti-social activity shall take place. 13.2 Unauthorised borrowing is prohibited. 13.3 Malicious damage to property is prohibited. 13.4 Learners shall not draw, write, view, disseminate, download or transmit by the

Internet or any other media any pornographic or objectionable material. 13.5 Posting inappropriate photographs, pictures or comments on social Media, i.e.

WhatsApp, Face Book etc. is prohibited. Both on and outside the school premises.

14. Dishonesty

Dishonesty and cheating shall be punished.

15. Cigarettes, Narcotics, Alcohol

15.1 No illegal drugs as defined in the SA Schools Act will be brought onto the school property.

15.2 No learner shall possess or use any tobacco product, narcotics (other than those prescribed by a medical practitioner), alcohol, matches or lighters on the school premises whilst in school uniform or whilst on a school excursion.

15.3 Any prescription medication taken at school must be declared to the class teacher and must be accompanied by a John Wesley School Medical Consent Form.

16. Transport

The Code of Conduct is applicable when making use of public transport to and from school. Learners may not hitchhike while in school uniform, whether formal or sports dress.

17. General Rules

17.1 Learners are not permitted to bring large sums of money or valuables to school. 17.2 The school will not take responsibility for money brought to school by learners. 17.3 Learners may not bring toys to school. 17.4 Work is to be handed in on time. 17.5 Learners who fail to produce a medical certificate after absenteeism during formal

examinations / tests / assessment tasks will obtain a mark of “0” (nought) for the particular examination/test/assessment task.

17.6 The learner will respect those learners in positions of authority. A learner who is in

a position of authority will conduct him / herself in a manner befitting someone in authority and not abuse the authority bestowed upon him / her.

17.7 No cell phones, cell phone watches, ipod’s, psp’s, MP3/MP4 players or tablets may be used by learners on the school premises, whilst in school uniform or on a school excursion.

17.8 Children are responsible for all books and stationery in their possession that is the property of John Wesley School. Parents are responsible for paying for any loss or damage to these items.

18. Contravention of the Code of Conduct

Contravention of the Code may result in misconduct proceedings followed by disciplinary action including warnings, suspension or expulsion. The procedures to be followed in the event of any breach of the Code and forms of punishment are contained in Annexure B. Any misconduct which constitutes a criminal offence, shall, if deemed necessary by the Board of Governors, be reported to the South African Police Services for investigation.

ANNEXURE A

DRESS CODE No other item of clothing other than those listed in the uniform list, which may be amended from time to time, is allowed. Learners must adhere to the following dress regulations

1. Socks are to be folded on the ankle for girls and below the knee for boys 2. Shoe laces must be laced and tied correctly 3. Shoes must be kept polished 4. Girls must wear the regulation tunic tucked into the tracksuit pants when wearing the

tracksuit 5. Girls’ tunics must be 2cms above the knee in length 6. The boys’ school shirts must be tucked into their shorts 7. No T-shirt may be worn beneath the school shirt 8. Only the regulation jersey and/or beanie may be worn 9. After extracurricular activities learners must either leave the school wearing full

school uniform or the school tracksuit. Footwear must be worn 10. Only full, black swimming costumes may be worn 11. No G-strings are permitted. 12. Civvies worn at school, school functions or excursions must be appropriate dress for

school – no high-heels, make-up, jewellery, revealing clothes or non-regulation hairstyles are permitted.

ANNEXURE B Procedures to be followed to ensure compliance with the terms of The Code of Conduct.

1. Within the classroom : Educator’s discretion

Educators may, after having been heard, punish learners for disobedience, misdemeanours or failure to comply with the homework or work requirements at their own discretion, depending on the nature, frequency and the severity of the misdemeanour. Punishment may include: 1.1 extra work or written punishment, 1.2 moving a learner to sit or stand at the back or front of the classroom, 1.3 issuing de-merits, 1.4 arranging detention for the learner, 1.5 confiscation of homework, books or any other material with which a learner

may be occupying his / her time instead of the work set for him / her during lesson time,

1.6 confiscation of any personal notes which pupils may pass to each other during lesson time.

1.7 exclusion from an excursion or other prescribed school activity, at the discretion of the Principal.

2. Detention

When a learner falls below the threshold of 60 Merit Points, he / she will receive a Written Warning and will be placed in detention for 1½ hours after school on a Friday, having been given two days warning of this pending action. If a learner fails to attend the detention, he / she will automatically be placed in detention again. Parents whose children are placed in detention must ensure that alternative transport arrangements are made ahead of time and must ensure that their children attend school on the day of detention.
