Beyond the game: I think the genius of the video lies more in the use of a pop standard of lyrics. The song may not be complicated but it is instead catchy as hell! Something we found out at the office after one view of the video when everyone was singing it and humming it under their breath. The same way that your favourite catchphrase from television or radio becomes a favourite answer and conversation tool - “John Ruddy Would Have Saved That” has become the perfect phrase to use to get a laugh from people and the perfect input for any conversation ranging from the recent European elections, through to stock evaluations and VD.

You also have to appreciate the dancing. Kid Marsden the suited and gloved singer in the video has also invented a dance, his snazzy shoulder waggle and awkward dancing is the sort of visual humour that people love. Today people respond to a Meme sort of humour, and that awkward “White guy dancing” is hilarious to watch just because of his commitment to the act.

YouTube connects people because it gives us the chance to look at something that ordinary people are doing. Loads of people know Kit and Tyler (the cameraman in this instance) but many of them would be surprised to see the video and that surprise will give them colour to their grey days. The excitement of seeing someone you know in a viral video is always good form of entertainment and we live in a sharing culture where the easiest way to show off that you know a celebrity is to hit the SHARE button.

Of course, the other problem is that they’ll be humming “John Ruddy Would Have Saved That,” for a couple of weeks afterwards.
