Mary Edwards, Team Vicar Savernake Team, writes . Presents and cards – trees, turkey and tinsel - we all get involved in many different time-consuming activities over the next few weeks. However, in all this we should try to keep our eye on the Christmas story – the story about a baby born in Bethlehem – the story we hear year by year in our Carol services and Nativity plays. Focusing on that story, several threads seem to run through it: that the people caught up in this drama are all searching; we have the shepherds who are told to go to Bethlehem to find the child; we have the Wise men who are searching for a new born King, who mistakenly go to Herod’s palace at first but then continue their search for the child. And we have Mary and Joseph who are searching for a place where the baby can be born. Not one of them is on their own, left to their own devices, they are all being led. The shepherds have the angels instructions, the Wise man are following the star and Mary and Joseph are instructed to Bethlehem because of the Roman census. They are all on a journey. The pregnant Mary and Joseph are on a journey, not of their making, but they still have to travel to Bethlehem, a place little known to them. The shepherds leave their sheep on the hillside and journey into the town and those Wise men leave their country to find a baby. Not one stays still, not one stays in their place of safety, in their comfort zone. The journey is a metaphor for life - particularly the Christian life – of searching and of being led. Here in this area something exciting is about to happen – well in about 6 months time! It may involve us searching – it may involve leaving our places of safety and searching in the company of others – I hope that lives are changed – and that it enables us to be better able to face the future together. Want to know more? As ’they’ say, “Watch this space!” Let us hope that this year we can truly focus on the message and meaning of Christmas and are refreshed by the story which tells us that God loves us so much that he came to live among us. That we are refreshed for a new year when that message of peace, goodwill and justice for all means something in our lives and the life of the nation. On behalf of all the Savernake Team Clergy, I would like to wish you all a very blessed and peaceful Christmas. With my love in Christ, Mary

All good wishes for a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR! The PCC is very aware of how very lucky we are with our wonderful volunteers! Whether your contribution keeps the church going financially, musically, arranging flowers, polishing brass, cleaning, reading, ringing bells, keeping up the churchyard and/or leaf sweeping, we are so grateful. You

make all the difference and we couldn’t manage without you! Thank you very much! The Annual Parochial Church Council meeting (ie the PCC AGM) will be held after Evensong on Sunday 7th February in Quince Cottage. Any parishioner who wishes to attend will be welcome. No Sunday Club in January, but we hope on Sunday 7th February Monthly Munch will be at the Village Hall on Wednesday 6th January, at 1pm Pram Gathering on Friday 29th January, 3.30pm in the church The Alabare Sleep Outs are set to take place across the region on 26th February. These are sponsored events that give participants a small insight into what it is like to be homeless and sleep rough, and the Dean of Salisbury Cathedral has agreed to let people sleep out in the cloisters again. Last year 200 slept out and raised £33,000 for this worthy charity. If you would like to take part in a Sleep Out, or organise one, please contact Tony Richmond on 0845 786808 or [email protected] (see leaflet in the church)

Weather Report for October Rainfall - 78mm. [50mm] 10 days [6] max 24 hr: 15mm [15] Over the country as a whole, October was 25% drier than average. While Chute had more rain than last year, the three previous years averaged 165mm, so unless my maths is very wrong, we were 114% drier than 2006, 05,and 04. If the low reading for 08 is put into the equation, that would still leave Chute 34% drier than our average October. Which follows the trend so far this year. Temperatures - Max day: 17c , Min day : 10c, Avg Day: 12c. Min night: 0c. Avg. night 5c Days of full sun: 4 Virginia Chambers

Chute Parish Council Planning Applications E/09/1275/LBC: 3 Tolleys Cottages, Cadley : Small timber framed porch on west elevation. No objection by PC. E/09/1467/S73: Longview, Upper Chute : Use of flint blocks on new house. Under consideration by PC There were no Planning Application Outcomes. Waste and Recycling Collections Wiltshire Council have confirmed that there will be no disruption to our normal Wednesday collection arrangements over the Christmas and New Year holiday period. Amenity Skip for Upper Chute Parishioners - January I have arranged a subsidised amenity skip for the weekend beginning Friday 22nd January 2010 to be sited as usual on the Village Green at Upper Chute. Remember that it will be a general purpose skip – the content goes to landfill – so is not intended for recyclable materials. Its always well utilised so I have to ask you not to overload it. If there is any stuff left on the ground, we may well be charged subsequently (at unsubsidised rates) for a special run to clear it. Litter Pickers Don’t forget we now have three ‘litter pickers’ and some gloves to complement them if required. They are available on loan to Chute Parishioners – anyone who wants to take advantage of this should give me a bell and arrange a pick up time. The next meetings of the Parish Council will take place on Thursday 3rd December 2009 and Thursday 7th January 2010: both at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. As always, you will be welcome to attend: the agenda will be displayed around the Parish and the previous (draft) minutes will be displayed on the official Council notice board at the Village Hall.

Seasons Greetings to all - from your Councillors and me. David Clark (Chute Parish Clerk: Tel 730782)

Playing Fields. The Vice Chairman introduced this item by giving a résumé of the back ground to current operation of the Management Committee. The Members then had a lengthy discussion before moving to discuss the relevant items listed on the agenda. A copy of the KGPF Summary accounts & forecasts for 1 Apr 08- 31 Mar 09 was considered and the Members RESOLVED to note and agree the budget subject to further scrutiny and acceptance by Chute Parish Council. The Vice Chairman thanked everyone for their efforts in getting the drafting of the KGPF Constitution this far and when it became clear that the Chair of KGPF Management Committee was working to a pre 29 October 2009 version. The Members then took the view that whilst they were content with the post 29 October 2009 version they were concerned that the KGPF Management Committee and not had sufficient input into the post 29 October 2009 version. After due consideration the Members RESOLVED to not agree the post 29 October 2009 Constitution until the KGPF Management Committee had been afforded sufficient opportunity to comment. Finance. The Members in considering the budget for FY 10/11 reviewed the reserves policy and set the general reserve level at 75% of the FY 09/10 Precept. Then having taken into account the anticipated income and expenditure levels for FY 10/11 and specific reserves for a new notice board and parish elections set the Precept for FY 10/11 at £2100 an £200 increase on FY 09/10 Members agreed the following donations: PCC - £30.00. Playing Fields - £210.00 Village Hall - £100.00 Planning. The Members noted that a Tree Preservation Order & Tree Replacement Order made on the land adjacent to Chute Forest Cottage and that an appeal had been lodged against the tree replacement notice. E/09/1501/FUL. Having considered the application in some detail the Members had no objections but did have some concerns which Cllr Close

agreed to investigate and to circulate to Members a draft response that could be sent by the Clerk to Wiltshire Council. Parish Clerk. The Vice Chairman informed Members that the Parish Clerk had notified the Council that he intended to stand down as Clerk in July 2010.

The date of next meeting was confirmed as Thursday 21st January 2010. Phil Gill, Chute Forest Parish Clerk

Chute Wednesday Club Our last trip for 2009 was to Bath on Wednesday November 18th The day started off rather windy and damp but dried up on the way, we were then able to spend a good part of the day enjoying the shops and buildings. On Wednesday December 2nd we have our Christmas dinner at Wyke Down, this is booked 12 noon for 12.30. We will have our usual raffle so please try to bring along a raffle prize if you can. Look forward to seeing you all there and thank you to every one for your support throughout the year. We will hold our AGM on Wednesday March 17th 2010 details will be in printed in the Chronicle. The Chute Play & Village Celebration!

Saturday 5th June, 2010 A day for all the family to enjoy! We are producing a short and exciting new play. James Burke-Dunsmore directed our Passion Play 10 years ago, and we have invited him back to direct this very different production. The response to the invitation to take part has been very good but we still need a few more people. No one needs to be experienced, but any skills will be welcome. The play uses actors, puppets, music and singing. There are props to be found, costumes and sets to be made. If you would like to be involved, behind the scenes or acting, there will be something you can do! If you haven’t been to one of the early meetings and you would like to join in, please tell one of the production group before Sunday 6th December (Barry Caddick 730730), Mike Alderson (730388), Amanda Holroyd (730233), Tim Harker (730898), David Brown (730236)) James will be in Chute on Wednesday 9th December, and will be glad to meet anyone who would like to help in any way. The play will be a journey for us all!

Carol Singing on Tuesday 22nd December Please join us at Providence Cottage (walk in through the garage) from 6pm for mulled wine and mince pies before we move off at 6.30 if you would like to sing carols round Chute Cadley and part of Lower Chute. Enthusiasm is the only criterion, and children are particularly welcome! Please bring a torch (any questions ring 730233) 8th January,12th February, 12th March, 9th April –all at Chute Village Hall at 8pm.

Bourne Valley Movies in aid of Chute Village Hall We are sorry to say that the film booked for December, “Julie and Julia” cannot be made available. Moviola tell us that the distributors have delayed the DVD release date. However, we expect, we shall be able to show this in the New Year. Alternative films are not very suitable so, with all the other activities leading up to Christmas, we have decided to cancel the film evening booked for December 16th. It looks as though choices for the New Year are excellent and we shall have a fine programme starting on 20th January. Please lookout for notices (no magazine in January.) The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2009 At the time of going to press, the Chutes have raised £1374.75 for the 2009 Poppy Appeal. This includes: collections in the Pubs and Club, the house to house collections and the sale of wreaths for the Remembrance Day Service; but there is still one wreath payment to come, so I expect the total to increase by £20 or so. That is about £100 up on last year, entirely thanks to a record house to house collection. Congratulations to everyone! On behalf of the Royal British Legion, I would like to thank all the volunteer collectors for their hard work; also the people of the two Parishes who gave so generously. The annual Poppy Appeal is the Legion’s principal fund raising event. It is through your help and generosity that it can continue to provide support to millions of ex-service men and women and their dependants. If anyone would like to make a further donation, they can be sent to me at Old School House, Chute Standen, SP11 9EE. Cheques should be made payable to “Poppy Appeal”. Brian Daly

Chute Cricket Club Dinner This proved to be an excellent evening, celebrating a very successful and thoroughly enjoyable season. Some of the highlights were: We won 7, lost 6, drew 1, had 2 cancelled due to the weather, and 1

cancelled because Inkpen didn’t want to get beaten! 29 players played for Chute during the year, of whom 16 played 5

games or more. The 6 a-side tournament proved very successful and hopefully will

become an annual fixture. There were far too many memories from the season to mention here, but they included: Charlie Gold’s excellent knocks throughout; Jon Burden’s embarrassment saving 28 against Shalborne; Paul Struthers’ 3 for 5 off 6 against Wallop; Christopher Hopton’s stylish 45 against Burbage and then 41 against

Wherwell; Nigel Bell’s 64 in the Twenty20 against Leckford; The team’s 206 for 7, away, at Linkenholt – the highest score we’ve

achieved to date; The wonderful tournament and how good was it to have a Chute

Ladies team entered; Paddy Burt’s 4 for 27 off 6 against Charlie’s XI; Paul Struthers’ caught and bowled against Linkenholt; And the last game of the season against the Old Boys, where Jamie

Williams, George Staff and I managed to crawl to a last ball win. As for the awards: Andrew Appleby, Chris Orange and Joss Sheppard were all awarded their

caps. The John Burden trophy for Bowler of the Year was awarded to Paul

Struthers; George Staff, Jon Harries and Michael Richardson had all been in the running.

The Alan Rolls trophy for Batsman of the Year was awarded to Charlie Gold; Andrew Appleby, Christopher Hopton and Jamie Williams had all been close.

29

A new Trophy, the Tantanoola Trophy, courtesy of Audrey & Rowan Cherrington, was awarded to George Staff who, in the opinion of the 2 captains who had led the team during the season, was deserving of special recognition.

The Clyde Trophy for Player of the Year, voted for by all club members, was awarded to Charlie Gold.

To my complete surprise, a 2nd new trophy was also presented, to me - the Chris Stock Trophy; I am still amazed at the thought behind this, and indebted to everybody who contributed. Hopefully, it will be awarded to the winners of future Chute Linkenholt derbies.

Looking forward, 2010 already promises to be even better, with slightly more fixtures than 2009, the AGM on Thursday 11th February, indoor nets starting on Tuesday 2nd March at John Hanson School, outdoor nets starting on the playing field on Thursday 22nd March, our inaugural tour to the West Country on 15th / 16th May and . . . . . . . Roll on spring and summer 2010! Chris Stock, 730613

Chute Neighbourhood Watch As a follow up to November’s Chronicle asking householders to complete their NHW ‘Name and Address’ Performa’s, the response has been rather sluggish. As I mentioned, the Police at Tidworth, are very keen that we should carry out this formality and sign the whole village up as quickly as possible. The Police are confident that this action will enable them to respond quicker to any call for help. Full village participation will demonstrate a commitment by us to vigilant security and the concept of NHW; so please fill in your Performa’s as soon as possible and pass them on to your local representative.
