Tyler Durham was one of three winners of the Orlando Symphony Orchestra Young Composer Competition for his work, Dreamcatchers, which resulted in performance of his work by that orchestra in 2012. STUDENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS (these students studied composition with me while writing

Tyler Durham was one of three winners of the Orlando Symphony Orchestra Young Composer

second place at the 2002 KAN Film Festival in the College Division, Original Category, and third place

at the 2003 Broadcast Education Association International Student Video Festival, Narrative Category.

Malcolm Ruhl, masters thesis composition, Cicada Dance, chosen to participate in the American College

Theatre Festival Competition at the regional level, Kansas City, 2001. It received a Meritorious

Achievement Award as well as an award for Most Outstanding Original Full-Length Production.

Excerpts from this work were chosen to be performed at the national level of ACTF, John F. Kennedy

Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, D.C., 2001. (Malcolm also studied composition with Dr.

Michael F. Murray while writing Cicada Dance).

2014 Served as a member of the Music Department Graduate Committee. Helped facilitate the design of new recruiting ads, and recruited new graduate students at College Night at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. Served as a member and past chair of the Music Department Personnel Committee. Served as President of Pi Kappa Lambda music honorary society. Coordinated numerous Chinese Music demonstrations both on and off campus. Coordinated the Springfield Symphony-PTA Young Composers’ Project. This program allowed MSU Composition students to have music they had arranged to be performed by the Springfield Symphony.

2013

Prepared MUS 239 (Intro to World Music) application to CGEIP for consideration in the new General Education program. The course was accepted and is now part of the new curriculum. Served as a member of the Music Department Graduate Committee. Served as Chair of the Music Department Personnel Committee. Served as President of Pi Kappa Lambda music honorary society. 2009 Chaired the Asian Arts and Letters Committee, sponsored by the Provost’s Research Incentive Program. In addition to chairing this committee I wrote the original Provost’s Research Incentive grant that funded the initiative. During 2009, I oversaw the distribution of over $21,000 to 11 students from 8 different departments throughout the University who embarked on Asia-related research projects. Coordinated the Traditional Music of China Course during the Fall, 2008 semester. While Meng Lei and Sun Li taught the course, I spent a tremendous amount of time and energy taking care of their needs while they were here. This included visa, housing, transportation, food, and medical issues as well as day to day curricular issues. I also set up and facilitated off campus performances for them: one in Rolla at the Brewer Science Corporation, and two others at local Elementary schools. Chaired the Music Department ad hoc Strategic Planning Committee, Spring, 2007 Member of the Curriculum and Graduate Committees Wrote a successful proposal for the Provost’s Research Incentive Program resulting in the Asian Arts and Letters Initiative Participated in Living-Learning Community Program, MSU Residence Life. Organized and coordinated the Traditional Music of China course, a multi-disciplinary campus event. This includes acquiring funding totalling $7, 411 for the course by successfully writing grants to external and internal entities.
