Teenagers are often criticized for being self-absorbed and indulgent but what I see more often in John Paul College students is a strong spirit of generosity and compassion for others. For me this is the essence of what our Catholic character is all about. John Paul College has a well-earned reputation as a school of excellence, both academically and in co- curricular endeavours. This year the NZ Herald acknowledged JPC as the top performing decile7 school with respect to NCEA Level 2. We consistently achieve nearly 100% pass rate at all levels of NCEA and I am particularly proud that our Maori and Pacific students achieve at the same level as non-Maori. It was partly for this reason the school was shortlisted for the Prime Ministers Award this year, being placed in the top four schools within our category. It was a proud moment for JPC and a tribute to Paul Billing and his team. The list of student achievements this year are many and varied but highlights include our polished musical, ‘Into The Woods’, winning the prestigious Chanel Shield two years in succession, regional winners of the Shakespeare Festival, the outstanding success of rugby, waterpolo, cricket, netball, basketball, swimming and rock climbing. Our success as a college is of course reflective of the highly talented and focused young men and women we have but I wish to publically recognize the staff of John Paul College who by their deeds, allow our students to ‘shine’. This includes staff who are coaches and managers of sports teams, staff who hold tutorials in the holidays and weekends, who leave their families behind for a week to go on camp. Despite relatively poor pay and heavy workload, they put students first. Our school theme segways naturally into staff farewells. The first is the dynamic duo of Ms Andrea Ewen and Mr Gene Rigney. Ms Ewen has been a committed and inspiring Biology and Science teacher since 1999, while Mr Rigney has been an inspiring Science teacher and Network Manager for 30 years. We wish Mrs Candy Stevenson all the best as she takes maternity leave and thank her for her leadership of our magnificent musical ‘Into The Woods’. I wish to thank Mr Ron Currie, our Property Manager, who is retiring after 11 years. He has cared deeply about the grounds and people on our staff, which is clearly evident when you walk around the college. Lastly, we farewell Owen Kowalewski, after 20 years of dedicated service as a teacher and Dean of Year 9. His contribution has been enormous, particularly in camps, the Utuhina Stream and a role model in his Catholic faith. I extend my sincere thanks to my fellow Trustees who are passionate about wanting the best for JPC and are strong advocates for the college. In this regard, I have relied heavily on the wisdom and experience of Lyall Thurston, our Board Chair, who has been a constant source of support for me. To my Senior Leadership Team of Peter Sinclair, Ali McHugh and Maree Stewart, their professionalism, dedication and loyalty have been inspiring and greatly valued. I also extend my thanks to Sheryl Hewitson, who joined our leadership team this year. She has been instrumental in developing our bicultural plan as well as contributing valuable ideas to our leadership team. The staff of John Paul College, including support staff, are to be commended on another outstanding year of service. Students at John Paul College know they are cared about because their efforts and dedication. We look forward to working with you next year, in partnership, educating your children.
