Page 4—635

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY, MOTHER EARTH Before Mother’s Day that was last Sunday, I saw a bumper sticker on a car: “Wish the Earth a Happy Mother’s Day”. The sticker made me think. We owe all we have and are to our Mother’s (and Fathers) and so we honored our mothers last week. That was awesome.

However, in 2015 Pope Francis wrote an encyclical (Laudato si) in which he kept referring to the Earth as our Mother. Without Mother Earth, we would be nothing. Sound familiar? So the Life and Justice Ministry thought it would be a good idea to ask us all, how do we honor Mother Earth?

Yes, there is much about the pollution and disuse of the earth that is or seems to be beyond our individual control. However, we do have some control and some power.

How faithful are we to the recycling plans in our communities, and do we embrace them personally? How sensitive are we when we get the urge to through that nuisance wrapper or container out the window of the car or down on the sidewalk that we walk? How about the use of countless plastic bottles that end up floating in the ocean for decades? How well do we conserve, or reverence the value of water that seems so plentiful here, but is in dire need among our brothers and sisters in the far corners of the earth? Do we care for that portion of Mother Earth that we “own” or “rent” where our homes are located?

Have we made the internal change of attitude toward our Mother Earth, or is that attitude of reverence and awareness still alien to us?

So, this Sunday, a week after Mother’s Day, why not commit ourselves to a change of attitude, if needed, and wish Mother Earth – Happy Mother’s Day – too.

(Read part or all of Pope Francis’ encyclical: Laudato si on the web site: www.laudatosi.com)

Pentecost Sunday

Dear Parishioners,

Today in the Catholic Church we celebrate Pentecost Sunday.

Pentecost comes from a Greek word meaning “fiftieth day.” In the Jewish tradition, Shavuot or the Feast of Weeks celebrated the time between Passover and the giving of the Law (Torah) to Moses on Mt. Sinai, a period of 50 days. It was the Hellenistic (Greek) Jews who referred to this feast as Pentecost.

In the Christian tradition, however, the meaning is different. Fifty days after Easter, Christians celebrate Pentecost as the day when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles (See Acts 2: 1-41). Pentecost has been referred to as the birthday of the Church.

Knowing the history of the Apostles and their actions/reactions to the Passion and Death of Jesus is significant here. Judas betrayed Christ and then hanged himself (Mt. 27: 3-10). Out of fear, Peter denied Christ (Mt. 26: 69-75). Also, out of fear, all the other Apostles (Mt. 26:56), except for John, fled from the cross. Yet, after receiving the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, Peter, acting as the spokesperson for the other Apostles, addressed the crowds fearlessly:

You who are Israelites, hear these words. Jesus the Nazorean was a man commended to you by God with mighty deeds, wonders, and signs, which God worked through him in your midst, as you yourselves know. This man delivered up by the set plan and foreknowledge of God, you killed, using lawless men to crucify him. But God raised him up, releasing him from the throes of death, because it was impossible for him to be held by it . . .. God raised this Jesus; of this we are all witnesses . . .. Therefore, let the whole house of Israel know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Messiah, this Jesus whom you crucified. (Acts 2: 22-24, 32, 36)

Obviously, something significant changed Peter and the other Apostles. First, they experienced the Risen Lord Jesus. They saw that He was alive despite everything that was done to torture and kill Him. He is alive. Next, they were filled with the gift of the Holy Spirit. They received supernatural gifts to strengthen them with their mission of preaching, teaching and witnessing to Christ’s Resurrection.

I believe in the power of the Holy Spirit. If the Holy Spirit can be responsible for the growth of the Church against all odds from its seemingly impossible beginnings to become a Church of over a billion today worldwide, can we underestimate what that same Spirit can do to renew the face of the earth? Pray to the Holy Spirit for guidance and strength. Pray for the gifts (See Isaiah 11:2-3) and fruits (See Gal. 5:22-23) of the Holy Spirit to be more fully present in your lives.

Don’t ever underestimate what the Holy Spirit can do if we invite Him into our lives (give Him permission) daily.

Fr. Ed Namiotka, Pastor

MAY THE POWER, THE FORCE, THE HOLY SPIRIT BE WITH YOU

There once was an elderly woman who had four grown sons. The woman lost her home to fire, so the sons thought it would be good to build their mother a new home. They encountered some trouble.

The first son was a carpenter, but he didn’t know anything about plumbing, masonry or electrical work. So he thought there was no way he could build his mother a home.

Each of his brothers —an electrician, a plumber and a bricklayer—had similar thoughts. They didn’t know anything about the other building trades, so thinking only as individuals, they each decided there was no way any of them could build a new home for their mother. So the house was never built.

The Holy Spirit is the greatest untapped power in the world and within us. It is the power of God in our lives—it is God himself.

How often do we think that the Church could not possibly need or make use of our God-given talents?

Pentecost is about believing that the power of the Holy Spirit has been poured out upon each of us. It’s about building a house, building up the Church together, that no one person can do alone.

Let us be awakened and renewed by Holy Spirit and go forth, today and everyday, to use that power that is within to make all things possible.

And, may the Holy Spirit (Force) be with you!

GRANT WRITER Do we have any Grant Writers among us?

GWCM is looking for a volunteer to help seek and write Grants for use within our ministry.

For example, in the past, we had a Grant that has recently ended, that funded our Summer Lunch Program for Children. There are programs and foundations out there that support projects of this kind.

If you have any experience and can help, please call me. Jerry Washko, GWCM Secretary 856-845-6944.

ORDER OF CHRISTIAN FUNERALS “Cremated remains of a body should be treated with the same respect given to the human body from which they come. This includes the use of a worthy vessel to contain the ashes, the manner in which they are carried, the care

and attention to appropriate placement and transport, and the final disposition.

The cremated remains should be buried in a grave or entombment in a mausoleum or columbarium. The practice of scattering cremated remains on the sea, from the air, or on the ground, keeping cremated remains in the home a relative or friend of the deceased are not the reverent disposition that the Church requires.

Whenever possible, appropriate means for recording with dignity the memory of the deceased should be adopted, such as a plaque or stone which records the name of the deceased.”

- - Order of Christian Funerals, Appendix No. 417

PANHANDLERS & SOLICITATIONS Solicitation & panhandling are not permitted on parish grounds. If you witness this, please contact an usher immediately. Holy Angels Parish helps many families through our St. Vincent de Paul Society. St. Vincent de Paul

has a process in place to help people in need by providing immediate assistance and working with families to direct them to several agencies to get them back on their feet.

If you would like to help, please use the poor boxes located in the churches. Or, drop a donation in the collection basket each weekend—just mark an envelope: St. Vincent de Paul. These funds will go directly to them.

The diocese has encouraged us to invite those who need our help to contact the parish office or St. Vincent de Paul who can provide assistance.
