May 27, 2018 The Most Holy Trinity

The Ineffable Mystery of God-

The first thing our par-ents taught us about our religion was most proba-bly the sign of the Cross. The last thing a priest will do at our graveside is make the sign of the cross over our body. A Chrisan’s life is marked “in the name of the Fa-ther, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” The Sunday Bible readings oen speak to us about the Father (as originator of all life related to crea-on.) Sending His Son or Word ( for our salvaon) and communicang the Spirit (related to our re-birth from water and the Spirit). The revelaon of God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit tells us first of all what God is for us. But as to the mysterious Unity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we can only stam-mer with inadequate hu-man concepts, which are not able to express the ineffable mystery of God in himself. We want to know. But we must real-ize that more important than knowing about God is knowing God, the way two beloved know one another! An inmate per-son-to-person relaonship gives a knowledge that cannot possibly be ex-pressed in human termi-nology. It is that kind of knowledge of God which ulmately sasfies a hu-man being. “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable His ways!” (Ma. 11:33)

The Catechism teaches that “by sending his only Son and the Spirit of Love in the fullness of time, God has revealed his innermost secret: God himself is an eternal exchange of love, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and he has destined us to share in that exchange.” (CCC 221; cf1 Cor 2:7-16; Eph 3:9-12). “The complete Trinity dwells in us” (R.P. Philippon). By worshipping the Trinity we realize the full truth of ourselves. “In the communion of grace with the Trinity, man’s ‘living area’ is broadened and raised up to the supernatural level of divine life. Man lives in God and by God.” (Pope Saint John Paul II)

Prayer For Faith in the Real Presence

We come to you, dear Lord, like the apostles, saying, “Increase our faith.” Give us a strong and live-ly faith that you are really present in the Eucharist, a strong and active faith that we may live by. Give us the splendid faith of the centurion, which drew such praise from you. Give us the faith of the beloved disciple to recognize you and say, “It is the Lord!” Give us the faith of Peter to confess, “You are Christ, the Son of the living God!” Give us the faith of Mary Magdalene to fall at your feet, crying, “Rabboni! Master!” Give us the faith of all your saints to whom the Eucharist was heaven begun on earth. In every reception of the Eucharist and at every visit, increase our faith and love, our humility and reverence, and all good things will come to us. Dearest Lord, increase our faith!

Father’s Day Novena of Masses

For the intenon of our father’s, living or deceased.

Our Father’s Day Novena Masses consist of 9 consecutive days of Masses for the intention of our fathers, living or deceased. On the outside of the envelope are print-ed lines for you to write down the names of the fathers you would like remembered in our Nove-na Masses. They can be your biological father, husband,, step-father, God-Father, etc. There are more lines on the back of the envelope too. After writing their name, please insert your donation for the Masses in the envelope and place it in the offertory basket next weekend, or drop it off at the church office no later than Friday, JUNE 8, 2018, as our Novena Masses begin on Saturday, June 9th. A novena means nine consecutive days of public or private prayer for some special occasion or intention. Its origin goes back to the nine days that the disciples and Mary spent together in prayer between Ascension and Pentecost Sun-day. To make a novena means to persevere in prayer asking for some favor over a period of nine days in succession or nine weeks in suc-cession. It means fulfilling our Lord’s teaching that we must continue praying and never lose confidence. This confidence is based on our Lord’s words: “Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened to you. For whoever asks receives; whoever seeks finds; whoever knocks is admitted. ( Lk 11: 9-10)

The church office will be closed,

Monday, May 28th, Memorial Day.

Teachers everywhere will likely agree with the maxim “If you become a teacher, by your pupils you’ll be taught.” My own experience of twenty-five years teaching at both the secondary and university levels bears this out. How my students urged me to make a concept clearer or an idea even more appealing.

It has been both a joy and a consolation to meet many of them in later life and I enjoy listening to them tell me of some gem of wisdom which I dispensed but often don’t remember. As I see time moving along in life, I cannot help but wonder if they are surprised that I’m still around. Shades of Mr. Chips!

That adage I referred to could not ever be applied to our divine Teacher. Those first uneducated disciples of Jesus were likely unaware how accurate they were when they called Him “Master.” He was, and is, the perfect teacher.

We only know from Jesus that there is a Father and Son, and that they sent us yet another member of their “family” called the Holy Spirit. That Spirit is the Person who taught those simple fishermen, as well as the tax collector Matthew, and the tent-maker Paul the understanding of who Jesus was, and what He taught. The Spirit still does that for us. He also guides the Church along her grand march through time.

The Blessed Trinity is a reality far beyond our ability to under-stand. Nor can any earthly teacher explain it. It is a part of revelation that lives in the realm of faith. Human reason may remain puzzled, yet it dare not deny the possibility of the Trini-ty. When you stop to think about it, the fact that Jesus told us about it was motivated by His love for us. In revealing His authentic self, Jesus wants us to love Him as He truly is, much like a good friend lets us know him on an intimate level.

Meanwhile, we are called to remain grateful pupils for having such a Master. It is yet another sign of His love and mercy, in which we are very well schooled. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be. Amen.

Hear Our Prayer This Day

In the quiet sanctuaries of our own hearts, let each of us name and call on the One whose power over us is great and gentle, firm and forgiving, holy and healing … You who created us, who sustain us, who call us to live in peace, hear our prayer this day.

Hear our prayer for all who have died, whose hearts and hopes are known to you alone ...

Hear our prayer for those who put the welfare of others ahead of their own and give us hearts as generous as theirs ...

Hear our prayer for those who gave their lives in the service of others, and accept the gift of their sacrifice ...

Help us to shape and make a world where we will lay down the arms of war and turn our swords into plough-shares for a harvest of justice and peace ...

Comfort those who grieve the loss of their loved ones and let your healing be the hope in our hearts...

Hear our prayer this day and in your mercy answer us in the name of all that is holy.

The peace of God be with you. - Austin Fleming

Many memories to be included on Memorial Day:

In memory of our Founding Fathers who wrote this Land’s fundamental freedoms into the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. In memory of those who died in all our wars, in the terrible war between the States that gave rise to this Memorial Day Celebration’ of the two World Wars which many of us remember; all of those who surrendered themselves to death in Korea, in Vietnam, and in the present day in the Middle East. In memory of all whose lives have been claimed in prison camps though out the world. In memory of all those whose lives have been snuffed out through willful abortion. In memory of all those who have met death through senseless violence both on the streets and in their homes. In memory of the lives sacrificed on the altar of prejudice, hunger, neglect and hatred. In memory of all who have been slaughtered on the highways and streets of our country. In memory of those who sacrificed their lives in order that another might live. In memory of those whose lives have been termi-nated through the legal effects of drugs, of all types and descriptions. In memory of the martyr’s blood shed so that others might know the love and mercy of God the Father and our Redemption through His Son, Jesus. In memory of those who have gone before us, and whose vision and courage opened the Church to an even deeper understanding of her mission to the world. In memory of those who have touched our lives, directly and indirectly, individually and collectively, mak-ing them better because of their self-gift to us. In memory of all our dear loved ones, who now share the eternal vision of glory with the Father, and the joy and peace of Christ’s resurrection. In memory of the myriad of people who have come before our eyes during our entire lives, known or unknown, who are no longer with us. May all of these be granted the grace of eternal salva-

tion to dwell in the mansions of heaven with the Father, the heaven that Jesus has prepared for us all. Amen.

On Monday, May 28th, our nation will observe Memorial Day. This day is meant to remember those who have perished

in the service to our country, including the veterans and the chaplains who have died. Please take a few moments to

pause, reflect and recite this Prayer for Memorial Day which is from the Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers book. Other prayers for our troops, including for those now serving and their family members, may be found on the prayers page on the website of the United States Conference of Catholic

Prayer For Memorial Day

God of power and mercy, you destroy war and put down earthly pride. Banish violence from our midst and wipe away our tears that we may all deserve to be called your sons and daughters. Keep in your mercy those men and women who have died in the cause of freedom and bring them safely into your kingdom of justice and peace. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
