THIS WEEKENDS READINGS
Reading I: I Kings 19: 9a, 11-13a The Lord orders Elijah to act as His servant. Then the Lord teaches the prophet that He comes in a “tiny whisper,” and not in the expected ways of wind, earthquake and fire that Elijah might expect. Reading II: Romans 9: 1-5 Paul laments that the Jews, his own brothers and kinsmen, have not accepted Jesus as the Messiah. Therefore, they have not entered into the new Covenant with Christ. The Gospel: Matthew 14: 22-33
Jesus’ solitary prayer models
something for us, namely taking time
out for silent solitary prayer each
day. Then we hear of Jesus’ famous
walk on the water, prompting an
impulsive Peter to jump in to greet his
Lord, only to weaken through
doubt. Jesus offers him a helping
hand with a smile.
__________________________ LENDING A HELPING HAND
Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson
Back in June, a good friend sent me a video of something amazing. It seems an Amish farmer wanted to move his large pole barn to another place on his property. So, does he call in a moving company with heavy equipment? No! Instead he calls on about 300 of his closest friends, and they together actually lift the skeleton of the massive structure and walk it to the new location! Viewed from a distance, the men’s black clad legs are seen standing out from the bottom of the red building as they walk in unison following the directions of a leader. It’s as if the building becomes a mammoth centipede! The video is worth downloading. For one thing, you will see the importance of “lending a hand” to a friend in need. “Lending a hand” is precisely what Our Lord does in this week’s chosen Gospel passage. A storm at sea is raging. Jesus has left His prayer place on the mountain and suddenly appears walking on the waves! When Peter catches sight of Him, He jumps out of the crowded boat onto the water and he takes a few tentative
steps toward His Master. But all of a sudden, logic kicks in; awareness steps up, and Peter loses his confidence and begins to sink. Only when Jesus lends a hand to lift his friend up does the crisis end. (I often picture Jesus with a smile on His handsome Face, maybe even with an added chuckle, as color returns to Peter’s scared face as he stands solidly again). Of course, it is the perfect opportunity for Our Lord to remind Peter that his faith needs a little updating. Some added depth. More strengthening private prayer. Naturally, the Holy Spirit wants us to ask ourselves some probing questions as He presents this well-known gospel scene. When life puts us in some “rough water” we know who we can depend on. Such “stormy seas” will come to nearly all of us at one time or another. So, do we turn to God when it happens, or do we rely only on our instinct for self-preservation? Or the cleverly concocted myth of self-reliance that we eschews help? That Amish farmer knew better with his problem. Without belaboring the obvious, I trust that we have all learned a lot about ourselves and our dependency upon each other during these months of the pandemic, with the probability of more months to come. Hopefully, you and I as believers have stepped up our reliance on God. We know in a brand new way that some problems are too much for our finite fiber to cope with, much less to solve. We need a helping hand. God’s is the best. Maybe you don’t have 300 friends to call on to help solve your problem. But you do have One better than those by far. He once said: “Come to Me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will refresh you.” He never reneges on a promise, and is always there to lend His most powerful Hand. After all, “problems are only opportunities with thorns on them.” ( Hugh Miller, Scottish scientist, d.1856.) God love you and give you His peace!
__________________________ PLATTEKILL FOOD PANTRY
We are in great need of volunteers to help with our Community Garden,
primarily with weeding, watering and harvesting vegetables for our food pantry. If you are able to help us out, please contact our Community Garden Coordinator Lorry Martin at 845-527-2013.
The Plattekill Food Pantry will continue to distribute food on the first and third Wednesday of each month, from 4-6 p.m. Our next distribution will be on this Wednesday, August 19th. For more information, please contact Libbie Werlau at 845-389-7998.
__________________________ ST. PAULY’S DONATION SHED
The St. Pauly’s Textile Donation shed will be temporarily closed. The Covid-19 Pandemic, and the resulting shutting down of International borders has resulted in the inability to redistribute the majority of the clothing collected. Currently millions of pounds of clothing are being stored in trailers for redistribution. As you are aware, the Parish receives funds for all of the clothing collected, which in turn has helped to fund the Plattekill Food Pantry. This “temporary” closing should have no impact on the operation of the Pantry, so be assured that those in need in our community will still be served by our wonderful volunteers. If at any time we find that funding of the Pantry is a concern we will notify you. In the meanwhile, please set your textile donations aside and when the shed reopens we will gladly accept your donations once again. Thank you for your continued support.

__________________________ COBERTIZO DE DONACIÓN DE
TEXTILES DE SAN PAULY
El cobertizo de donación de textiles
de San Pauly se cerrará
temporalmente.
nuestros maravillosos voluntarios. Si
en algún momento encontramos que
la financiación de la despensa es una
preocupación, se lo notificaremos.
Mientras tanto, deje a un lado sus
donaciones textiles y cuando se vuelva
a abrir el cobertizo, con gusto
aceptaremos sus donaciones una vez
más. Gracias por su apoyo continuo.

__________________________ LECTURAS DE ESTE FIN DE SEMANA
Lectura I: I Reyes 19: 9a, 11-13a
esperar.
Lectura II: Romanos 9: 1-5
Pablo lamenta que los judíos, sus
propios hermanos y parientes, no
hayan aceptado a Jesús como el
Mesías. Por lo tanto, no han entrado
en el nuevo Pacto con Cristo.
El Evangelio: Mateo 14: 22-33
La oración solitaria de Jesús modela
algo para nosotros, es decir, tomarse
un tiempo para la oración solitaria en
silencio todos los días. Luego
sonrisa.
__________________________ PRESTANDO UNA MANO DE AYUDA Reflexión del reverendo Leonard N. Peterson
En junio, un buen amigo me envió
un video de algo increíble. Parece que
un granjero amish quería trasladar su
gran establo a otro lugar de su
propiedad. Entonces, ¿llama a una
empresa de mudanzas con equipo
pesado? ¡No!
tentativos hacia Su Maestro. Pero de
repente, la lógica entra en acción; la
0493 08/09/2020 Page 3
conciencia se intensifica, y Pedro
pierde su confianza y comienza a
hundirse. Solo cuando Jesús echa una
mano para levantar a su amigo
termina la crisis. (A menudo me
Alguna
profundidad añadida. Más
fortalecimiento de la oración privada.
Naturalmente, el Espíritu Santo
quiere que nos hagamos algunas
preguntas de prueba mientras
presenta esta conocida escena del
evangelio. Cuando la vida nos pone en
“aguas turbulentas”, sabemos de
quién podemos depender. Tales
"mares tormentosos" nos llegarán a
casi todos en un momento u otro.
Entonces, ¿recurrimos a Dios cuando
sucede, o confiamos solo en nuestro
instinto de autoconservación? ¿O el
ingenioso mito inventado de la
autosuficiencia que evitamos ayuda?
Ese granjero Amish conocía mejor su
problema.
Sin confundir lo obvio, confío en
que todos hemos aprendido mucho
sobre nosotros mismos y nuestra
dependencia mutua durante estos
meses de la pandemia, con la
probabilidad de que vengan más
meses. Con suerte, usted y yo como
creyentes hemos intensificado nuestra
dependencia de Dios. Sabemos de una
manera completamente nueva que
algunos problemas son demasiado
para nuestra fibra finita y mucho
menos para resolverlos. Necesitamos
una mano amiga. Dios es lo mejor.
Tal vez no tenga 300 amigos a
quienes llamar para ayudar a resolver
su problema. Pero tienes uno mejor
que los de lejos. Una vez dijo: "Vengan
a mí, todos ustedes que trabajan y
están agobiados, y yo los refrescaré".
Él nunca incumple una promesa, y
siempre está ahí para prestar Su mano
más poderosa. Después de todo, "los
problemas son solo oportunidades con
espinas". (Hugh Miller, científico
escocés, fallecido en 1856.) ¡Dios te
ama y te da su paz!
