The turf was not turned brown because of the stencil being left on the field during the heat of the day; the stencil burned it itself. After some inves- tigative work it was determined that the ply- wood stencils had been stored under the stands against several pallets of Ammonium Sulfate fertilizer. The fast- release fertilizer had permeated the ply- wood and when the plywood was laid on the turf, the residual fertilizer in the plywood burned the turf. maintenance of synthetic turf fieldsThirty years ago when synthetic turf started its climb to populari-

ty many universities high schools and park amp ree departments

bought into the promise of being able to host more events and loweroperating costs Many began to make the switch from natural turffields to synthetic turf fields

Pioneer recognized this growing trend in synthetic turf and realizedthat there were no paints or products designed with the synthetic turfmanager in mind We were beginning to get a lot of questions andcomments from our customers who used to have natural turf andswitched to synthetic turf wondering what products we had available

for their new synthetic surfaces says Pioneers Chris Fiore Theywanted to be able to put a different color of paint over their goal linesor paint the enozone for Homecoming but there was nothing on themarket that would enable them to do that without potential damageand costly repair to their turf

When instailation was completed inearly November the University of Pioneerconsisted of three fully functioning mixedturf fields with nearly a dozen varieties ofnatural and synthetic turf spread overthree separate areas each in excess of 60x 60 feet

The drainage system for the Stadium field includes the standardextensive subsurface drainage system with a pump located approxi-mately 30 feet beyond the left field foul pole The field is gravity-drained into a pit and then excess water within the stadium can bepumped into a retention area about 440 yards away

The Major League practice fields with percolation rates of 12-18inches per hour are designed similarly with a geotextne layer sepa-rating the old subgreoe from the new one Four- and 6-inch drain tiles20 feet on center run through the c-inch gravel layer and connect intoa dry well outside the centerfield fence The central tile is equippedwith a flapper-style backflow valve to prevent backup during a floodsituation The gravel layer is topped with 10 inches of USGAsandpeat blended sand

After a lengthy process the SportsConstruction Group of Cleveland waspicked to install the several different sec-tions and varieties of natural and syntheticturt The Sports Construction Group didan amazing job with construction andinstallation says Schattmger There weresome very specific requirements that wefelt we needed for the field and they exe-cuted it perfectly

When instailation was completed inearly November the University of Pioneerconsisted of three fully functioning mixedturf fields with nearly a dozen varieties ofnatural and synthetic turf spread overthree separate areas each in excess of 60x 60 feet

The fields which replaced a grass knolladjacent to Pioneers shipping and receiv-ing area are a colorful assortment of turfand seems a little out of place with theother industrial companies surrounding itbut Pioneer wouldnt have it any other wayThis venture is a major step for the turfand turf paint industry no other companyhas a testing ground like this and we aregoing to use that to our advantage Fioresays We believe in the sharing of knowlmiddotedge and exchanging of ideas and this nextyear should prove very valuable to sportsturf managers across the US We plan onsharing new developments each year atthe STMA Convention adds Schattinger
