Chief Mental Health Technician (GS-0180-13), Ohio-1 Disaster Medical Assistance Team,

National Disaster Medical System, United States Department of Health & Humans Services.

Serves as the senior mental health officer for a Federalized team of health care providers and

support staff who respond to natural and man-made disasters nationally and internationally.

Responsible for disaster mental health counseling services to DMAT staff and affected persons.

USERRA covered when deployed by the Secretary of the Department of Health & Human

Services. Provides mental health crisis response training to staff. Responsible to Team

Commander for force protection. Deployed to Hurricane Irene. Conducted mental health phone

call check-ups with 150 DMAT employees following their return from Hurricane Sandy. May,

Adult Inpatient Psychiatry Unit, The University of Cincinnati Hospital. Provided psychological

services to acute care inpatient psychiatric patients. Conducted psychological assessments,

Inventory-2, the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III, the Rorschach (Exner System), the Rey

Memory Test, the Thematic Apperception Test and the WAIS-III. Consulted with patients and

psychiatric treatment and team regarding assessment results . Co-lead a weekly patient support

group.

Second 6-month major rotation (24 hours per week): National Institute of Drug Abuse grant for

the development of treatments for cocaine and opiate dependence, VAMC. Conducted screening

assessment utilizing Addiction Severity Index, SCID, and the Hamilton Anxiety and Depression

measures. Provided manualized treatment for cocaine dependent persons. Actively involved

with the manuscript preparation of grant research data. Prepared a paper for publication

presenting the data and results of a NIDA research study.

12-month Minor rotation (8 hours per week): Dual Diagnosis Clinic, VAMC. Conducted

individual and group psychotherapy, and actively participated in weekly multidisciplinary

treatment team meetings. Carried 3 long-term psychotherapy patients. Member of intern

training committee where responsibilities included assisting the training director with in-service

Provided individual counseling to a diverse student population covering issues such as career

development, interpersonal concerns, academic planning, and relationships. Carried a caseload

topics such as gay, lesbian and bisexual sensitivity training for the police academy and alcohol

between the clinical team and prison officials at the state and local level. Computerized the

treatment planning, clinical assessment and discharge summary procedures. January 1995 -

August 1996. Promoted after six months. Formerly, Counselor: Carried a caseload of patients

from the Columbus metropolitan area and federal parolees who were diagnosed with chemical

dependence, eating disorders, and dual addictions. Clinical responsibilities included

coordinating treatment planning with a multidisciplinary treatment team, presenting

psychoeducational lectures, running psychotherapy groups, and conducting individual therapy in

AY 2003-2004

1. I was hired to work, alongside Drs. Salyers and Piazza, as an evaluator for a

demonstration grant awarded to Lucas County Juvenile Court Chief Magistrate Donna

Mitchell of the Family Drug Court. This grant was funded for three years and the

evaluation component is for $15,000.00 per year.

AY 2002-2003

1. I received funding from the Center for Teaching and Learning. This grant ($300.00)

allowed me to purchase additional psychological assessment materials for students’ use

while enrolled in the Advanced Personality Assessment course.

AY 2001-2002

1. The Community Reentry Partnership project in Lucas County was funded at $96,000.00

over three years. This grant was accepted by not funded following the withdrawal of

finances by the State.

2. I applied for and received a $500.00 Faculty Small grant was awarded in support of on-

going research and provided the funding for the purchase of a statistical analysis software

package.

3. Research involving the SASSI-3, which produced two, to date, published or accepted

articles and an additional submission for publication, was funded, in part, by a donation

of materials from the SASSI Institute valued at $430.00.

1. I agreed to serve as the outside evaluator for a grant submission titled “Autism Spectrum

Diagnoses and Wii: A winning combination for exercise participation in an at-risk

population?” This was a $72,470.00 grant submission that was unfunded. The principal

investigators were Alexia Metz, Joseph Dake, Beth Ann Hatkevich, and myself.

2. I was the principal investigator on a Program of Excellence submission that would have

partnered the Department of Counselor Education and School Psychology, BGSU’s

Department of Counseling, The Psychology Group of Greater Toledo, and the Browning

Masonic Retirement Community of Waterville. The title of the submission was

“Expanding the Knowledge Base of Counseling into a Geriatric Population: An

Improvement to the Department of Counselor Education and School Psychology. The

amount requested was $15,600.00. This proposal was not funded. Spring, 2006.

3. I agreed to serve as a co-evaluator, along with Associate Dean Benjamin and Dr. Jane

Cox for a Catholic Charities grant designed to assess the immediate and long-term

effectiveness of interventions designed to strengthen the marriages of couples who have

adopted children. Fall, 2006. This grant was not funded.

4. I was the principal investigator on a grant submission (Interventions and Practice

Research Infrastructure Program) that was to be a cooperative effort between the

Department of Counseling and Mental Health Services and the Cullen Center. The

amount requested was $2,662,336.00. This proposal was sent to the Department of Health

and Human Services, Public Health Services in the Fall of 2004 and not funded.
