C. PROJECTS

1. THE ORPHAN RESCUE KIT

After I joined RFFA in Chicago in 2005 I came up with the idea of the Orphan

Rescue Kit. RFFA adopted the concept and it is still promoted today on RFHA’s

web site {RFFA is Now RFHA Rotarians for Family Health and AIDS}.

In 2008-2009. DG Fred Loneragan supported the ORK and raised over $65,000

in his year as DG for RFFA.

The ORK has been instrumental in getting 4 vulnerable and at risk girls from the

slums in Kenya all to High School and now one in College. On a one off basis we

have paid for primary school and some secondary schooling for around 110

children all with an AIDS story. (Kenya and Sierra Leonne).

2. COOLAMON HOUSE

In 2002 Susan and I went to Cape Town to attend a housing and building

convention Africa. Here we met a Dutch lady who wanted a straw bale

orphanage built in one of the townships Mfuleni, in Cape Town.

The straw bale orphanage did not get off the ground but it is here that I realised

that we had to do something for the orphans in Mfuleni. I approached my

hockey friends in Sydney and raised $1,000 from a former player that I coached

when he was 16, Nuncio D’Angelo, a partner of a large law firm in Sydney,

Nuncio is Head of Banking & Finance at Norton Rose Fulbright Australia. With

the $1,000 Nuncio gave me I approached many charities. To no avail.

I met with PP David Benn at the 2002 International Straw Bale Conference

Susan and I organised and hosted in Ganmain and at the CSU in Wagga. David

was impressed with my story and suggested that I join Rotary, so David

introduced me to Grahame Miles and I was invited to join Coolamon.

It took many meetings and two club assemblies before Coolamon accepted my

project to raise $100,000 for Africa. After I joined Susan and I went back to

Cape Town in 2004 and started a relationship with the Rotary Club of Hout Bay.

We returned again in June 2005 after the Chicago RICON.

In 2005 Coolamon and Hout Bay became Centennial twin clubs and we started

the main project of raising funds to build and refurbish an AIDS and TB Clinic,

which has since become a model for South African Health.

Coolamon House as it is known, in honour of our club, was opened in 2013 and

among two other beneficiaries, Nonceba and Phumlani we have contributed over

$US 100,000 to Hout Bay. This included a TRF Matching Grant for US$22,000.

3. MOUNTAINS

2007 Mount Kilimanjaro raised $80,000

2011 Mountains of the Moon $38,000

2015 Mount Kenya $47,000

I was the team leader in all three expeditions. We had a mix of Rotarians and

non-Rotarians in all three teams. Have raised a total of $US185,000 from the

three mountains, this includes the first Matching Grant.

To date all of our Road MAPS to Africa Projects have raised around $US 289,000.

This includes the $65,000 raised by PDG Fred Loneragan. We are working on one

more matching grant of around $25,000. My original goal was $100,000 when I

joined in 2003. We will be close to a total of over $300,000 in 2016.

4. CLUB PRESIDENT 2008-09

In my year as President 2008-09 I encouraged the club to:

Conduct a monster raffle in aid of the Coolamon Central School.

Started the Rotary Markets in Coolamon.

Started the Coolamon Men’s Shed.

Retain members and introduce prospective members to Rotary.

{Created a new dinner badge and club banner.}

5. CLUB SERVICE

One of my achievements as a member was to bring the club constitution and by-

laws up to date after the Council On Legislation 2007. I have maintained that

duty ever since. PDG Ray King helped me with the 2007 revision after COL

2007.

The Coolamon web site and Facebook page were started by PP Les Millis and

myself. Les set the web site up in 2004 and I have looked after it since then. I

also look after three Road MAPS web sites, which go to support the projects,

including RAGES on an international scale.

I have compiled and published the Coolamon Club weekly bulletin since 2009.
