John Curtin Weekend (JCW) provides the opportunity for volunteers to give back to the community and dedicate time to help those who need assistance, while also developing personally and professionally. JCW takes place over six weekends in September and October each year, volunteers can work alongside local communities on local projects to achieve a much needed outcome that will benefit all.

JCW is the largest project run by Curtin Volunteers! (CV!). In 2018, over 510 JCW volunteers assisted on 42 projects, 31 of them located in regional Western Australia, 7 sites in the Perth metropolitan area, 2 in remote Western Australia, 1 in Malaysia and 1 in Singapore. Locally, the projects included working at the different agricultural shows, assisting at animal sanctuary’s, environmental work, building and land maintenance . The volunteers from Malaysia worked with rural primary schools for student empowerment and motivation while the Singapore volunteers assisted senior citizens to maintain their households. We had a very diverse group of volunteers who hailed from 33 countries around the world.

This amazing project is driven by generous volunteers who give of themselves tirelessly as well as site leaders, community partners, drivers, JCW team and regional coordinators.

Feedback from the community partners indicates that they were pleased with the outcome and grateful for the efforts of the volunteers. I know from the feedback received that you have made a big difference in the communities. Thank you to the sites for your amazing hospitality. Our volunteers appreciated their unique JCW experiences and will take away memories and relationships that will last a lifetime.

I have had the pleasure of working on JCW for the past thirteen years and will be leaving Curtin

this year. It is important to me that JCW continues to provide assistance with community projects in future years. I have full confidence that this will happen under the leadership of my successor, Krishan Shah. Krishan is well placed for JCW as he has worked for CV! for the past 5 years as Student and Community Engagement Coordinator.

My grateful thanks to everyone that I have had the pleasure of working with over the years. It is heartwarming to see what a difference the work of volunteers can make in the community. I look forward to seeing JCW expand and wish everyone well for the future.

John Curtin Weekend (JCW) has developed into a major multi-community project, with volunteers assisting regional and metropolitan communities in Western Australia, Malaysia, and Singapore, to complete projects which are of great importance in the life of their communities. This year, volunteers travelled to regions as diverse as Harvey, Pinjarra, Busselton, Kulin, Nungarin, and Bunbury. The regional towns share their community and their way of life with visitors from all parts of the world, and develop unique relationships with volunteers.

The value of JCW can be measured in numerous ways and with over 40 communities and 500 students participating in 2018, the benefits to the communities and the volunteers are very tangible. For the past 20 years the amazing successes delivered by JCW has been as a direct result of the leadership and extraordinary commitment of Maureen (Mo) Meredith. In retiring this year from Curtin, ‘Mo’ has left a huge heart print on JCW. JCWs and Mo’s legacy of dedication to the service of others will be forever intertwined.

JCW is about embracing the challenges and opportunities of our time to change lives for the better, with volunteers exemplifying Curtin’s vision of being a beacon for positive change. In the next decade, JCW has the opportunity to expand regionally, nationally and internationally. With the continued dedication and enthusiasm of Curtin students and community partners, JCW can continue to grow. Congratulations to all who have been involved in the magnificent achievement of planning and executing JCW. We look forward to many more successful years to come.

John Curtin Weekend is 20 years old! Can you believe it? They grow up so fast! CV!’s largest annual event began in 1999 as ‘John Curtin Day’, a day dedicated to community service in honour of John Curtin’s appointment as Prime Minister in 1941. Since then, it has grown into an event that spans 6 weekends in September and October, with over 400 volunteers travelling to 40 different metropolitan, regional and remote sites in WA this year, and an additional 110 volunteers participating in Singapore and Malaysia.

John Curtin Weekend, or ‘JCW’ to its friends, gives many students the opportunity to travel to parts of WA they may never have visited and engage with community members in a meaningful and impactful way. This book showcases the amazing adventures the volunteers had this year assisting local communities in whatever way possible.

On my first JCW, I travelled to Bunbury to help rejuvenate the garden of their Solaris Cancer Care Centre. Whilst I’m not an avid Gardening Australia fan, spending a weekend with passionate, hardworking people on a backyard blitz with a difference was an indescribable experience, made all the better by the smiles we

left behind. I’ve also had the opportunity to visit the town of Kulin and help the locals run stalls at their annual bush races. There were balloons and barbecues and burgers, but best of all there were brilliant people. And that’s undoubtedly the joy of JCW: the people you meet along the way – be they locals or fellow volunteers. The friendships you make on these trips last as long as the difference you make. That’s truly special.

JCW is only possible thanks to the incredible passion of Mo Meredith and her dedicated team of regional coordinators, site leaders, interns, volunteer bus drivers, community partners and, of course, volunteers. This is Mo’s last year at Curtin and I would like to especially thank her for her invaluable contribution to John Curtin Weekend and the Curtin community over the years.

History of

John Curtin Weekend

John Curtin Weekend commemorates the day that John Curtin was sworn in as Australian Prime Minister on 7 October 1941. It was suggested that students and staff would follow his example of service to the community by undertaking activities on this day. In 1999, six groups of students, coordinated by Curtin Volunteers!, undertook a variety of tasks on John Curtin Day, which included painting a drop-in centre for young drug addicts in Northbridge and erecting horse yards at Riding for the Disabled in Mt Claremont. In 2000, an anonymous benefactor provided funds for a major tree-planting project in the Southwest, which was undertaken on the weekend after John Curtin Day. Additional funds became available to repeat the project the following year.

In 2002, Australia celebrated the Year of the Outback, and it was decided to change the format of the service event, which became known as John Curtin Weekend for the first time. Various wheatbelt communities were contacted to see if they would like some volunteers to help with their community projects in return for accommodation and meals. There were eight sites that year and buses were hired to take the volunteers to the sites. Feedback from all was extremely positive. This format has continued throughout the years and the project has rapidly expanded to 42 sites. JCW has become an amazing community project that benefits those in need while providing meaningful experiences for all involved.

Mo, you’re the heart and soul of JCW and you’ve left an incredible legacy.

Finally, to all the volunteers who participated in JCW 2018. Thank you. You’re compassionate and generous, humble and inspiring. You are leaders with unique visions, serving and enriching our community, and walking in solidarity with John Curtin’s values. Keep doing what you’re doing. This book celebrates the impact you’ve had this year. I hope you enjoy the memories and that you’re back next year to make new ones!

Mo is a true legend and such a joy to be around. She is all about community and

inspires so many people to volunteer and give back each year. But above all she has

the kindest heart. We all love you Mo!

“Thank you Mo for your tireless work in making JCWs fun, safe and valu-able experiences for us all! You’ve taught me that there’s no such thing as planning too far in advance, and no matter how early I get to the flag

poles, you’ll still beat me to it!”

Mo is one of kind. Her generous nature combined with a love and passion for community and helping others has inspired generations of young people to become more engaged in volunteering, improving the lives of countless others, and transforming the Curtin Volunteers!

program from a small initiative into the success it is today.

The success of JCW is due largely to Mo’s incredible industry, wholehearted commitment and her overarching drive to make each JCW more effective and meaningful than the previous one. She has always kept herself two steps ahead of everyone else on every issue and without her there would have been no sites and no volunteers. It

has been an absolute pleasure working with her!

The Toodyay Race Club is forever grateful

for the support that Mo has provided to us throughout the years.

Mo has done a wonderful job in coordinating students who have worked tirelessly at our annual Festival over

many years. Mo has always been friendly, efficient and

certainly a treasure that we will miss.

Thanks for the many years you have sent the CV’s to Kununoppin. The assistance has been invaluable for the Hospital Auxiliary members and hospital staff. Best wishes for the future and call into Kununoppin if

you are ever going by.

We feel privileged to have had the opportunity to work with Maureen and the JCW has been so invaluable to our community. We have achieved different and major accomplishments every year that,

without Maureen’s background work, and this fabulous program, would be unlikely to ever happen.

I will miss seeing you at Curtin University but I am so excited to see where your journey takes you. You have been nothing but kind,

friendly, loving and extremely generous. I could ask for nothing more so on behalf of the Rotaract Club of Rossmoyne, I thank you. You will be
