Joey Newman Bio

“Any Day Now” is Joey Newman’s second collaboration with filmmaker Travis Fine. Their first film, the story of a flight attendant and a 10-year-old boy on 9/11, “The Space Between” premiered at TriBeCa in 2010 and later went on to play on USA Networks on the 10th anniversary of September 11th. Newman is thrilled to be returning to TriBeCa with “Any Day Now”.

A native of Los Angeles, music is in Joey Newman’s blood. Joey’s grandfather is famed composer and conductor Lionel Newman, and his great uncle is Alfred Newman, both of whom are part of the very definition of movie music. Film composing runs in the Newman family, with Joey’s cousins Randy, Thomas and David -‐ all successful, celebrated composers in their own right. Recently, Joey conducted Randy’s “Toy Story Suite” at the Young Musicians Foundation Gala alongside friend and legend John Williams.

Joey Newman’s music can currently be heard on the hit ABC comedy "The Middle", starring Patricia Heaton, and the TLC docu-series, "Little People, Big World", for which his underscore was nominated for a Primetime Emmy® Award.

Previously, Newman composed the music to numerous feature films; network and cable series; and provided arrangements for various recording artists. In addition, he wrote the orchestral score to NCsoft’s “Lineage,” one of the biggest online role-playing games in history. As a conductor and orchestrator, Newman has had the pleasure of working with several emerging and well-established Hollywood composers on projects across the media spectrum. In January 2012, he conducted Randy Newman’s “Toy Story Suite” at the Young Musicians Foundation (YMF) 57th Anniversary Gala Concert. Notable composers John Williams, Michael Tilson Thomas, Richard Kaufman and Teddy Abrams guest conducted as well.

Newman began his career working in television with Emmy®-‐winning composer W.G. "Snuffy" Walden, co-‐composing the final seasons of "Once and Again", starring Sela Ward, and "Providence", starring Melina Kanakaredes. Joey also provided orchestrations for Aaron Sorkin’s "The West Wing" as well as a number of other primetime dramas and sitcoms. Newman is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music.

Cindy Dole: What do movies like “Jaws,” “Star Wars,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Jurassic Park”

and “Harry Potter” all have in common? Those are just a few of the iconic movies that feature

musical scores by famed composer John Williams. This Sunday, there’s an exciting event for

fans of his music.

Eric Stromer: It’s the Young Musicians Foundation’s Annual Gala Concert happening Sunday at

the Dorothy Chandler, and one of the guest conductors is a composer of film, television and

music Joey Newman. He joins us live now. Joey, thank you very much. Joey how would you

describe the music of John Williams?

Joey Newman: I grew up with the music of John Williams. He was a long-time family friend of

my grandfather, Lionel. John came by, he’s friends with my grandmother, I saw him a lot, and of

course I grew up with “Star Wars” toys shoved in the closet downstairs of my grandparent’s

house. John Williams is just a staple for most composers and he’s pretty much been our hero

for years.

Cindy Dole: I understand he is going to be debuting some of his music on Sunday night.

Joey Newman: It’s exciting. There’s 2 film excerpts from “The Adventures of Tintin” and “War

Horse” that will be premiering. It’s going to be pretty exciting and I got the lovely honor of

conducting and rehearsing one of his pieces, which was the Tintin one. It’s amazing. It’s going to

be excellent.

Eric Stromer: Maybe some folks have heard of your cousin? He’ written some catchy movie

tunes. Tell us about that and what you will be conducting relative to your cousin on Sunday.

Joey Newman: My cousin Randy Newman is obviously a great composer. We know him from

most Pixar movies. I’m going to be doing a suite from “Toy Story,” which is really exciting for

me. I’ve been wanting to conduct my cousin’s music for a long time. I orchestrated for him on

“Cars” and Seabiscuit” so it couldn’t be more of an honor to do that, and of course be a part of

this family and to continue the legacy with the YMF as well.

Cindy Dole: We have to ask you about the Young Musician Foundation. Exactly what is it and

how important is to encourage music development?

Continued …

Joey Newman: The young Musician Foundation is in its 57th year. The flagship program is its

debut orchestra, which is the orchestra that’s going to be performing that night. It’s one of the

oldest, most successful, pre-professional training orchestras in the country. Many of its alumns

have gone on to play in the LA Phil, and many other orchestras. Another big part of it is of

course the Music Director and Conductor-in-Residence post. Michael Tilson Thomas who is

actually conducting on Sunday is an alumn. So aside from all the music mentorship and

instruction, they go into inner city schools in the greater LA area and help to basically continue

this classical music legacy and to nurture and develop students as well

Eric Stromer: The connection here I understand is that proceeds from the gala this Sunday will

benefit children musicians, getting the education and scholarships they need?

Joey Newman: Exactly. And in the studios for a lot of the film music are a lot of the alumns

from that orchestra who are also good friends of mine. It’s something that is just an amazing

kind of Los Angeles in particular based kind of setting that I just hope is around for more years

to come.

Cindy Dole: And tickets are left? I’m assuming there are. It just went online. I think I saw that

there are plenty?

Joey Newman: Yes, there are definitely tickets left. I think you can go online at ymf.org/gala.

Check it out.

Cindy Dole: We thank you so much and good luck on Sunday. That is Joey Newman.

Eric Stromer: That’s a good night out. Good music, great music.
