LAYPERSONS’ & FUJINKAI CONVENTION

The 21st Layper-sons’ Association and 22nd Hawaii Rengo Fujinkai Conventions were successfully held on Maui on September 17-19, 2010. About 80 peo-ple participated (30 from neighbor islands) in committee meetings, Fujinkai and Laypersons’ General Meetings, “Bridging the Gap” panel discussion. It was decided the next Layperson’s and Fujinkai Conventions will be held on Kauai in 2012.

THANK YOU to Donald Fujii, President of the Laypersons’ Association and also served as Co-Chairperson of the Convention with Yayoi Hara. They did a wonderful job of co-ordinating all the transportation to the hotel in Lahaina as well as to the three temples on Maui (Lahaina, Kahului and Wailuku) to attend the various meetings and services. They also made onolicious foods, including fresh caught papio, and served us breakfast, lunch and dinner. Also, the fellowship with all the members of the three temples as well as from the other is-land temples on the Big Island, Kauai and Oahu.

THANK YOU also to Valentina Watson who led the Fujinkai ladies in a discussion about the future of the Hawaii Rengo Fujinkai (statewide Fujinkai). Oahu has agreed to con-duct the next Hawaii Rengo Convention meet-ing on Kauai. Laypersons and Fujinkai Convention delegates continued the YBA Convention workshop held in June of this year on the topic of “Bridging the Gap”. A panel consisting of Lyn Yamamoto (Wailuku) first briefly re-capped the YBA workshop, followed by pres-entations by panelists Iris Nitta (Kahului),

Mark Nakamura (Hilo), Melanie Matsui (Haleiwa), and Sam Gushiken (Koloa). The fol-lowing is a summary of their presentations and discussions that lists general gaps, problems and issues that arise because of these gaps, and sug-gestions/ideas to start bridging those gaps.

I. Communication/language/cultural gaps: Lack of communication between Kyodan, Fujinkai, and ministers, between members of other temples, and between temple and the greater community. = Sermons need to be relevant to our community and today as well as to younger generation (i.e. explain why we chant and offer incense). Make sermons pertinent to what is going on in the world. = Members can contribute to newsletters and temple bulletin by submitting articles and essays. = Making newsletters (i.e. Pure Land Life, Hawaii Buddhism) available online and inviting community to activities online and via local newspapers.

II. Gaps between people: Not enough new people coming in (as well as loss of members who do not come any more). = New people should be made to feel welcome = Hold extra curricular activities for members and invite friends to join such activities as golf club, sake tasting, and cooking classes. = Hold classes on Buddhism, not only for the members but for the general public.

III. Age and generation gaps: = Hold activities to create an environment of sharing (i.e., Haleiwa has craft day, in which the Fujinkai teaches craft such as rug making). Do you have any suggestions for new or differ-ent activities that would bridge the gap?

Meet Our New Minister Aloha everyone. It is nice to meet you.

I am a new minister of Jodo Mission of Hawaii. I arrived on October 11. My name is Yasuhiro Watanabe. I came from Abiko City, Chiba Prefecture. I had a birthday on September 3rd and I am now 35 years old.

I attended the graduate school of Waseda University and majored in applied econom-ics, especially the corporate governance system of Japanese firms. So I am familiar with Japanese econ-omy, history and cul-ture.

Then I made up my mind to be a Bud-dhist minister. I want to contribute to many people to improve their lifestyle. I met a minister of Jodo Mis-sion and talked to him about my thoughts. He was willing to accept me and I became his apprentice. Thanks to my master Koyo Hasuike, I began training as a minister and became qualified in December 2008.

Now, I’ll try my best to work with all members of Jodo Mission of Hawaii and to practice St. Honen’s teaching and Nenbutsu chanting. Thank you for your attention. NAMU AMIDA BUTSU.

MAHALO NUI LOA Thank you, thank you to everyone who volunteered their precious time to make our annual Bazaar held on October 17, a great success. It was an event of dedicated members and friends who unselfishly came for days to prepare the merchandise for the Bazaar. The preparation involved the do-nations by members and friends; the col-lecting/storage of these donations, the sort-ing, displaying, pricing, selling and the overall clean-up; the parking attendants; the planning and coordination of every phase of the Bazaar; the pre-Bazaar prepa-ration, i.e., the buying of foods for the pickles and meals for the volunteers for the whole week; and all the other incidentals that come with a great project.

It may have been a little overwhelming but the camaraderie, the fellowship, the renewing of old friends; the meeting of new friends, the sharing of stories and meals more than anything overcame all the sweat and hard work. Thank you again for your tremendous sacrifice to this Bazaar, another winner. ARIGATO!

What is “Perpetual Memorial Service?” (Eitaikyo)

This record of a perpetual memorial ser-vice and is called Eitaikyo in Japanese. When the date of death occurs for a person listed on this record, the ministers pray for that individual during the morning service. The prayers will continue each year for as long as Jodo Mission exists. Anyone can be included in it. You may put your own name on the list, too. This also helps when it is difficult to have memorial services. We also welcome you to attend the morning service at 8:30am.

How to apply Stop by the office, and fill out the applica-tion form. Each name costs $200. After the application is accepted, the name will be listed on the record.

Wedding Services, Baby Blessings, House Blessings are available

upon request.

If you are planning to get married or know someone who is planning a wedding or if you would like to renew your wedding vows, you are welcome to recommend our Temple. To pledge eternal love between husband and wife to Amida Buddha is very important. Baby Blessings: May Amida Buddha’s love surround our children with love. House Blessings: May your new house, apartment, home be blessed. Please call for an appointment.
