Getting the most out of the fair

  First impressions do count.

Dress smartly (but you don’t need to wear a suit).

Treat the fair as a first stage interview; it might turn out to be just that especially as the recruiters will remember those people who made an extra effort.

Bring a pen and paper to make notes after each discussion, including the names of anyone you speak to.

Keep your mobile on silent, or better still switch it off when you are talking to an employer.

Talk with employers; don’t just pick up brochures and freebies.

Be professional and think about how you want to start the conversation. How will you introduce yourself? What questions will you ask?

Be confident about what you can offer. Think about how your degree, any work experience and your range of skills – how might these be useful for that company?

If you are interested in a particular aspect of their work tell them. You’ll be able to get some inside knowledge that could be useful in your application or interview.

Make sure you’ve got a copy of your CV ready so you’re not digging around in the bottom of your bag.

Make sure you get along to one or some of the workshops.

After the fair

  Go through your notes.

  Read through the company literature.

Email any contacts that you made and thank them for their time – do this within 24 hours.

  Then start applying!

And most of all – have a great day and GOOD LUCK!

GRADUATE OPPORTUNITIES...AND BEYOND

Join the Enterprise management training programme and following an initial classroom-based orientation session, you'll be based in one of our branches, learning all the business skills you need to manage it yourself.

You'll join us as a management trainee and develop skills in all areas, from sales and marketing to customer service and finance. So it really is a general management scheme.

The hands-on business training includes:

Management skills: leadership, training, mentoring, people skills and soft skills and looking at the big picture.

Business management: cost control, profits, growth, account management, employee development and administrative skills.

Marketing: how to gain new customers both retail and corporate, how to manage dealerships and run body shop accounts.

Sales: how to increase revenue by generating more sales.

Customer service: taking reservations, handling customer enquiries, problem solving and delivering cars to customers.

Fleet control: how to handle repairs, and getting the right number and type of cars in your fleet

There's also the opportunity to specialise if you find an area of the business you're particularly interested in, for example HR, Marketing or Finance, to name just a few.

Career progression

You'll start off as a management trainee and in as little as eight to twelve months, you could move up to a management assistant. From there, in your next year, you'll continue your training and you could become an assistant manager. That's when you'll receive a percentage of the profits generated by your branch, which means your earnings will be directly related to your performance.

Throughout our graduate programme, there's a series of tests and evaluations, after which you'll receive pay increases, rewards, and more opportunities for promotion. You'll almost certainly be a branch manager within just two years of starting, and after all that it's up to you how fast you move - there's area manager, group rental manager, general manager and then you might take over the world! Well, we are a global company after all.

Graduate Talent (Graduate business mentoring)

Stand No 31

http://gradtalent.co.uk/

Organisation profile I run a Mentored Graduate Programme. It involves employing and mentoring graduates who deliver business projects for my clients.

Past and current projects include implementing SAP Business One company wide systems for a 120 person business, managing & delivering a marketing campaign for the UK division of a Japanese equipment company & delivering a company overhead budget. Projects are well scoped out and typically last initially for 6-9 months but often extend.

Client companies are smaller established and independently owned businesses. They want to grow and improve. They know a graduate can help. But don't know where to source a graduate from, how to manage a project and don't have time to mentor the graduate. The opportunities for making an impression are huge.

The market rate for one graduate has doubled in under a year after being headhunted by Accenture. Another project delivered two big orders paying back the graduates' cost in 2 months.

You are given a lot of responsibility to see the project through from start to end and deliver the results. It's a great first stepping stone in your career.

I work with Bradford University to help place students with local businesses, ideally on projects. I will also run a Graduate Business Academy in May to help students to become ‘business ready’.

Most of our care and support is provided at home and in clinics, schools and health centres by our team of health visitors, district nurses, therapists and health promotion experts.

We are committed to developing graduates in any way we can. To date we have had 21 recent graduates from the local community work for our organisation in paid work experience posts which stretch all areas of the organisation including graduates in the Customer Liaison Team, Membership, Business Development, Web design and many others. It has become so successful that Locala has recently created a graduate academy. The graduate academy was developed and is currently run by the existing graduates in the organisation aiding both the development of existing graduates and the development of the academy itself through feedback from new graduates starting in the organisation.

The emphasis from all the graduate posts we offer is development and Locala will not provide a placement unless a clear development route is established. In interviews for graduates Locala not only ask what skills they can bring to Locala but what Locala can do for them. Locala aides in developing the graduates to be able to progress down their own individual career paths, whether it be with Locala or not.
