PREFACE

With the growth of tourism increasing with each passing year, need for well-

educated and experienced personnel has grown especially to work in different

fields of tourism industry. Due to this need for on the job training has gained a

huge amount of importance in present day. Job training is the process of

increasing the knowledge and skills of the workforce hence enabling them to

perform their jobs efficiently and effectively.

Considering this aspect and as a resident of Kullu, I chose Valley of Gods Tours

and Travels for my two months job training. Being a reputed and well known

company, I chose Valley of Gods Tours and Travels as I knew it will proved to

be a good learning experience for me. This job training helped me in enhancing

certain qualities which are absolutely necessary to succeed in the field of

tourism such as discipline , team work, hard work, mutual trust and as well as

continuous innovation.

With Manali, heavily promoting tourism in Himachal Pradesh among the

national as well as international tourist, I carefully studied the main tourist

attractions and packages offered by Valley of Gods to tourists. Therefore, job

training plays an important part in growth of students as well as tourism

professionals as it provides exposure by office work and industry operations and

helps to survive in the ever competitive tourism industry.

CHAPTER-1 INRODUCTION TO TOURISM BUSINESSTOURISM: Tourism is the travel activity for recreational, leisure, family or business

purposes, usually of a limited duration. Tourism is commonly associated with

trans-national travel, but may also refer to travel to another location within the

same country. The World Tourism Organization defines tourists as people

"traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more

than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes"

Tourism have different types and forms according to various basis.

Tourism industry, like every other industry, is growing in India at a much faster

rate. In India, inbound tourist expenditure per head is third highest in the world

and even more than global average tourist spending. Although technology is

replacing the manpower but still there is greater demand for manpower. Indian

market has expanded rapidly over the past few years and will continue to grow

at the fastest pace in the coming years.

Travelling often has been described as a means of education. Travelling is been

considered as an interesting and an important aspect of every individual life. If

we see history we will find that since evolution of human civilization man has

wondered from one place to another. Travelling has become second nature to

human beings. People over the ages have been travelling in countries and far

across the globe. People travel for business matters, trade and seek their

fortunes in different aspects of life. Migration takes place frequently now-a-

days. Travelling has also become a means of pleasure. It has been observed that

people spend nearly 500 billion a year on tourism.

TRAVEL AGENCYA travel agency is a private retailer or public service that

provides travel and tourism related services to the public on

behalf of suppliers such as airlines, car rentals, cruise lines,

hotels, railways, and package tours. In addition to dealing

with ordinary tourists most travel agencies have a separate

department devoted to making travel arrangements for business travellers and

some travel agencies specialize in commercial and business travel only. There

are also travel agencies that serve as general sales agents for foreign travel

companies, allowing them to have offices in countries other than where their

headquarters are located.

TRAVEL AGENT

A travel agent is a person whose job is to help people who want to travel by

buying plane tickets, making hotel reservations, etc. A Travel Agent operates a

Travel Agency. In addition to dealing with ordinary tourists most travel

agencies have a separate department devoted to making travel arrangements for

business travellers and some travel agencies specialize in commercial and

business travel only. There are also travel agencies that serve as general sales

agents for foreign travel companies, allowing them to have offices in countries

other than where their headquarters are located.

TYPES OF TRAVEL OPERATIONS

1. Travel Agencies:

Target Markets or Clients: Mass market, general interest travel and

package travel to more well-known destinations

Main Products/Services: Flight and other travel arrangements,

accommodation and event tickets, package tours for groups and

individuals (for outbound). Products are mostly sourced from tour

operators, ground operators, and local service providers, but also from

travel resellers and portals.

Distribution Channels: Direct sales to consumers. Inbound agencies

may sell to outbound agencies or place packages with resellers and

portals. Mass marketing done through advertisement via direct mail,

media, and via agency offices

2. Outbound Tour Operators:

Target Markets or Clients: Travellers with more specific interests,

usually a defined audience in the domestic market.

Main Products/Services: Package travel to a variety of destinations

within a specific area of interest, for groups or independent travellers.

Products are mostly sourced from inbound operators, or may be designed

in house with inbound operators, ground operators, and local service

providers in the destination country supplying many of the services.

Distribution Channels: Direct sales to consumers. Some outbound

operators may sell certain products through resellers or portals, or

through specialized agencies. Targeted marketing through direct mail (of

catalogues, brochures), via website and customer loyalty programs, at

travel fairs, and to special interest groups in the domestic market via

specialty publications, membership groups and clubs.

3. Inbound Tour Operators:

Target Markets or Clients: Travellers with an interest in a specific

destination or activity, usually long haul travellers in other markets.

Main Products/Services: Package travel for groups or independent

travellers in one destination or a region, may cover several areas of

interest or be more focused, for groups or independent travellers.

Products are usually designed in house, with some services from ground

operators and local service providers resold as part of the package.

Distribution Channels: Sales to outbound tour operators, some direct

sales to consumers and through resellers or portals. Targeted marketing

via direct contacts with outbound tour operators, travel fairs, and to

special interest groups in foreign markets via direct mail, special interest

publications, and some direct marketing via website.

4. Ground Operators:

Target Markets or Clients: Target clients are inbound and outbound

tour operators offering package services in the destination, as well as

independent travellers that have already arrived in country.

Main Products/Services: Services for tour operators or independent

travellers in one destination or a region. Offer own products and services

with some services from local service providers resold as part of the

package.

Distribution Channels: Direct contacts with tour operators, local

advertising, on the street advertising in the tourist season, some

marketing through websites.

5. Travel Resellers and Portals:

Target Markets or Clients: Long and short haul travellers, usually with

more specific interests but sometimes with general interests, may cover

markets in more than one country.

Main Products/Services: Similar to package services sold by outbound

tour operators, but collections may be grouped to appeal to a specific

audience.

Distribution Channels: Direct mailing, advertisement through mass

media and special interest publications, internet marketing via website,

special promotions, and web advertising.

6. Local Service Providers

Target Markets or Clients: Target clients are mainly inbound but

sometimes outbound tour operators offering package services in the

destination, as well as independent travellers that have already arrived in

country.

Main Products/Services: Services for tour operators or independent

travellers in one locality. Offer own services, with very few resold

services added to the package.

Distribution Channels: Direct contacts with tour operators, local

advertising, on the street advertising in the tourist season, rarely any

marketing through websites except in the case of accommodations.

CHAPTER-2JOB TRAINING Job Training or Internship is concerned with increasing the knowledge and

skills of employees for doing specific jobs, and development involves the

growth of employees in all aspects. In tourism industry job training not only

helps in carrying out the day to day activities in a tourism activities but also

provides knowledge and skill to succeed in future.

Training is an organized activity for increasing the technical skills of the

employees to enable them to do particular jobs efficiently. In other words,

training provides the workers with facility to gain technical knowledge and to

learn new skills to do specific jobs. Training is equally important for the

existing as well as the new employees. It enables the new employees to get

acquainted with their jobs and also increase the job-related knowledge and

skills. It is very critical for trainees as it helps in better handling of customers

and improving their productivity. This also helps in providing satisfaction to the

customers and increasing revenue of a travel agency. Buy giving knowledge and

experience in various departments of tourism industry such as operations, sales

etc. the flexibility of a trainee improves as there is a development of specialized

as well as overall improvement of skills in various fields.

Training helps us in making decisions and giving information to the tourists

depending upon the taste of tourists, budget, interest and facilities. This helps us

in creating better understanding of tourists and fulfilling their needs and

demands creating a good relationship between the company we are representing

and tourist. Not only in Travel trade but in almost every field an internship is an

important threshold step to enter in the world of professional.

IMPORTANCE OF JOB TRAINING

Higher Productivity:

It is essential to increase productivity and reduce cost of production for

meeting competition in the market. Effective training can help increase

productivity of workers by imparting the required skills.

Quality Improvement:

The customers have become quality conscious and their requirement keep

on changing. To satisfy the customers, quality of products must be

continuously improved through training of workers.

Reduction of Learning Time:

Systematic training through trained instructors is essential to reduce the

training period. If the workers learn through trial and error, they will take

a longer time and even may not be able to learn right methods of doing

work.

Technology Update:

Technology is changing at a fast pace. The workers must learn new

techniques to make use of advance technology. Thus, training should be

treated as a continuous process to update the employees in the new

methods and procedures.

Effective Management:

Training can be used as an effective tool of planning and control. It

develops skills among workers and prepares them for handling present

and future jobs.

CHAPTER-3TOURISM IN MANALI

TOURISM IN HIMACHAL PRADESH

Himachal Pradesh is one of India’s

best tourist attraction regions, with

its green valleys, snow covered

Himalayan ranges and unique

beauty, and it is indeed a

comfortable place for tourists. The

region has a rich cultural heritage

that attracts thousands of tourists

each year. In Himachal, every town,

every holy shrine, and the land

around is steeped in a culture and history that goes back over four millennia.

Bordering Tibet in the east and bound by the states of Punjab, Jammu &

Kashmir, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, Himachal is a favourite destination for

tourists as well as pilgrims.

A visit to the state of Himachal Pradesh can be amazingly invigorating, with a

view of towering snow clad peaks glistening in the early morning glow of

sunrise, or rippling waters in rivers and streams, a fragrant breeze whispering

some long-forgotten tale through towering pine forests, or stark brown

mountains standing guard over this timeless land.

The most visited places in Himachal Pradesh include Shimla, Manali,

Dharamshala and Macleod Gang. With the amount of tourists coming to

Himachal increasing with each passing year, it is predicted that Himachal will

level in near future.

MANALIBlessed with some of the most spectacular and beautiful landscapes anywhere,

it is a travellers paradise -lofty snow peaks, deep gorges, lush green valleys, fast

flowing rivers, enchanting mountain lakes, flower bedecked meadows, beautiful

temples and monasteries steeped in time. May it be for relaxing, sightseeing,

trekking, mountaineering, fishing, para-gliding, skiing, ice skating and golf,

Himachal has it all.

A stunning hill station surrounded by massive snow clad mountains and thick

pinewood forests, Manali has the twisty Beas River as its magnificent

centrepiece. Manali in the state of Himachal Pradesh is popular for its breath-

taking Himalayan beauty. A scared land, which is the abode of various Gods

and Goddesses, this striking hill resort has a full calendar of numerous colourful

events and festivals.

Popular as the queen of valleys, Manali is named after the law giver of ancient

India, Manu. Manali literally means the abode of Manu and hence this place has

huge importance from the perspective of the ethnic culture and tradition of India

Manali tourism is fuelled by two main seasons. The summer Holiday season

when many people and families travel to this place on Manali holiday packages

and the second big push to Kullu Manali tourism comes from the wedding

season with thousands of honeymoon couples heading to the region.

Manali also turns out to be an enchanting stopover for one who is driving up to

the snow-clad hues of Ladakh route some of the highest mountain passes in

India. Manali also has some of the ancient hamlets inherited by the Tibetans that

comes on your way to Leh-Ladakh. In addition, the popular treks from Manali

are - Chandrakhani - Malana trail, Beas Kund Trek and Bhrigu Lake Trek.

PLACES TO SEE IN MANALI•Rohtang Pass:The Rohtang pass is 51 KM north of

Manali and it is located on Manali

Keylong Highway at an altitude of 4111

meters (13,400 ft.). This pass opens for

tourist from April end to October end of

the year. In May, Rohtang becomes a

place for nature enthusiasts and

adventure seekers. The snow-covered mountains provide the perfect opportunity

to go skiing and snow scooter riding. All types of food stuff, coffee and drinks

are available at Rohtang pass and these are sold by local people. The weather

here is highly unpredictable and it is closed on Tuesday.

•Hadimba Temple

Hadimba Temple in Manali is one of the

major tourist attractions when it comes to

local tourist places. It is a four storey

wooden temple .The temple is

surrounded by a cedar forest at the foot

of the Himalayas. About 70 meters away

from the temple, there is a shrine

dedicated to Goddess Hadimba’s son,

Ghatotkacha who was born after she married Bhima .The sanctuary is built over

a huge rock jutting out of the ground, which was worshiped as an image of the

deity. The structure was built in the year 1553 and is one of the most visited

tourist destination in Manali.

•Solang Valley

13 km from Manali Solang valley is a

splendid valley between Manali and

Kothi which offers views of the glaciers

and snow-capped mountain peaks. The

plateau is frequently used for holding

camps by the trekking parties. Good

skiing slopes of the Mountaineering

Institute. Venue of annual winter

carnival from 2nd January to 6th January.

Bus service are available upto Palchan village (10 km) and then by jeep or on

foot during winters.

•Buddhist Monasteries

The Gadhan Thekchhokling Gompa in

Manali was constructed in the year 1969.

The architecture of the monastery

represents the Tibetan style of

architecture designed with hued frescoes.

The statue of the Lord Buddha presides

in the monastery. The monastery is run

by the local people who gather funds

through donations. Tibetan Monastery is one of the oldest and famous place in

Manali. Due to huge number of Tibetan peoples settled in Kullu Manali Tibetan

Monasteries has been set up. The main attraction of the monastery is the

handicrafts of Tibetan artistry and the carpets that are woven and sold in the

monastery.

•Vashisht Temple and Hot Sulphur Spring

The village is 6 km from Manali at the

banks of the Beas River opposite Old

Manali. Vashisht is reachable from Manali

by half an hour walk or a short drive up a

slanting road by Auto Rickshaw for Rs.50.

Most foreign tourists preferred staying here

or at the Old Manali than the downtown

Manali. Rich traditions and nice cafes are integral for backpackers. Vashisht has

all that. Like Old Manali, Vashisht is crowded with tourists during peak

seasons. Indian tourists mostly come here to bathe in the hot springs inside the

temple.

• Kothi

About 16 km from Manali ,Kothi is a quiet

but picturesque spot. If you are looking for

some peace and serenity in this busy hill

station, the small village of Kothi is a

splendid option. In earlier days, it was

considered to be the base camp for difficult

treks to Rohtang and other peaks.

Reminiscent of an old world charm, the

village has been a backdrop for a number of films. From anywhere in the

village, the view down below is simply breath taking to say the least. The river

here, flows in between a narrow, deep, gorge for a good one kilometre. Sudden

thermal springs, picturesque picnic spots and the calm of the village is sure to

take you to a different place.

•Manu Rishi Temple

Manu Rishi Temple in Manali, dedicated

to sage Manu, who according to Hindu

mythology, is the creator of human race.

Manu Rishi Temple, built in the pagoda

architecture is a noted pilgrim centre in

Manali. One can find various artefacts

along with the idols of gods and goddesses

in different postures, in this five-storeyed structure.

•Jogni Waterfall

This is nearly 3 km trek from Vashisht

templeAfter visiting the Vashisht temple

complex you can start the trek. The trek

route passes through narrow lane by the

side of temple and it goes through apple

orchids, tall pine trees small water

streams. On the way few restaurants and

guest houses are also available. A gentle

walk will take 30 minutes to reach the base of the waterfall. Jogini Mata temple

is at the base of the waterfall. From here if you can climb then can reach the top

point of the waterfall. The stiff climb will take 20 minutes more to reach at top.

CHAPTER-7JOB PROFILE IN VALLEY OF GOD TRAVELSI worked as a trainee at Valley of Gods Tour and Travels, Manali for two

months under the guidance of Mr Sanjeev Sharma.

I mainly worked at front office and also did some field work. The work I did at

the front office was to book hotels, taxi’s and buses for tourists, provided

information and guidance to the tourists , attended phone calls and send replies

to the online queries sent by our customers.

Various jobs performed are as follow:

• Hotel Booking and ReservationsI carried out advance booking of hotels on the basis of type of hotel and rooms

preferred by our customers. I mainly worked at Valley of Gods Hotel and

Chanderbhaga Hotel, Manali

• Car Rentals and Bus BookingValley of Gods Tour and Travels manages a reputed car rental service in Manali

and Volvo bus service from Manali – Delhi every day

• Collecting Deposits for advance booking and refunding of money

In case of advance booking I collected cheques, online payment and cash from

our customers and also carried out refunding of money in case of cancellation of

any trip.

• Destination ResearchBecause of the winter I got chance to do some destination research around

Kullu - Manali and explore some alternative tourist destinations to further

promote tourism in Manali.

• Resolving Queries through phone calls and e- mailsSince Valley of Gods Tour and Travels is engaged in various tourist activities

ranging from package tours to car rentals. There were lot of queries and

information which is answered either through phone calls or via emails at

Valley of Gods Tour and Travels. I also gave banking details to tourists for

online payment.

• Providing information to touristsI also provided information to the tourists about the tour hotels available

according to their preference, transportation facilities provided to them during

their time with Valley of Gods Tour and Travels and things which they will

need while travelling to Manali. Because of the heavy rain and snowfall we had

keep informing our clients about the weather conditions and make changes to

their itinerary based on it.

I was sent to Police station to submit ‘C’ Form with attached Passport copy and

Visa copy in case of foreigner tourist for safety reasons.

CHAPTER-8PERSONAL EXPERIENCEValley of Gods Tour and Travels Manali, being one of the prestigious and well

known travel agency in Manali, proved to be a good learning curve for me as

they taught me about various aspects of travel agency such as handling of

clients, booking of tours and buses, selling tour packages and provides reliable

information to tourists. I learnt how to tackle the different situations and

hardships faced in tourism industry.

With all the knowledge I had during our 2 and half years in BTA proved very

helpful during my job training as I had much more experience than others about

the various aspects of tourism industry and its working. I came to know that

there are various types of customers with specific demands whom we have to

handle and their satisfaction is the main priority for us. This not only helped in

providing better services to our customers but also maintaining a good

reputation of company in the market, for which Valley of Gods Tour and

Travels is well known in Manali.

While handling customers and providing information to them I learnt that we

need to have a good written and oral communication skills to succeed in such a

competitive industry. There are not only local and national tourists which we

have face but also international customers for which we need to have good

communication. Calmness and humble behaviour also main traits which one

must have in sales and information department.

During my time with Valley of Gods Tour and Travels, I learnt about the kind

of personality traits and standards which should be maintained by the employee

of an agency and kind of professionalism and work ethics possessed by an

individual while working for a travel agency. I came to know that how

important it is to work in a team or how to work with collaboration and perform

various tasks in tourism industry by making healthy relationship with our

colleagues and work with cooperation with others for successful running of the

company.

The main skill which I improved the most ids calling and writing mails to our

clients as these are the basic means with which we interacted with our

customers. I also improve my knowledge about the various tourism products

like accommodation, transportation, various types of camping and safaris

provided by Valley of Gods Tour and Travels. The training also helped in

overall development of my personality as we have to show confidence and

maturity while talking to customers and also have a personality to them in our

confidence. This not only helps in our own development but also helps in

creating a good and long relationship with the company we are representing

During booking of hotels and buses, I learnt that it is critically important to have

good and healthy relationship between various sectors related to our travel

agency and people associated with our organization such as hotels associated

with us , transportation wing etc. This helps in smooth and successful

functioning of a company. Even though Valley of Gods Tour and Travels is a

small travel agency as compared to others but the experience and knowledge

provided by them is unmatched At last I am sure that that everything I have

learnt while training will help me achieving my future goals easily.

MONTH WISE DESCRIPTION1. JANUARY

First day of training started with introduction to the staff at Yeti travels and I

worked under the guidance of Mr. Sanjeev Sharma. In the first week they taught

me about the vision of Valley of Gods Tour and Travels and amount of hard

work and punctuality which will be expected from me during my training.

During first 2 weeks there was lot of work because of tourists who came for

New Year and Winter Carnival Manali. I learnt about all the packages and

services provided by Valley of Gods Tour and Travels and hotels which are

associated with them. Since Valley of Gods Tour and Travels also maintained a

well reputed transportation business in Manali, I also learnt about their

associates working with them and its working.

I learnt about the various activities carried at a travel agency such as reservation

of tour packages and hotels, use of computer for online booking of buses and

hotels, providing information to tourists either through mails, telephones or

direct meetings. All the staff members at Valley of Gods Tour and Travels were

very helpful and provided their guidance during any difficulty which I faced

during my job training. During the last week I did room reservations for

tourists, answering phone calls, providing relevant information to tourists and

made bus booking for the guests and the locals travelling to Delhi.

2. FEBUARY

In this month I had a good experience as most of the work I did, independently.

Because of the bad weather conditions and off season there was not much

tourist activity as compared tourist activities from May to October, so I spend

much off the time in answering phone calls and responding online queries sent

by our customer’s related to our tour packages, trekking, motor cycle and

bicycle tours in the month of July-October.

There was lot of banking activities which I carried out such as providing bank

account details to tourists for advance booking and clamming of checks made to

Valley of Gods Tour and Travels. In case of cancellation of any trip or booking,

I also carried out refunding of money to our customers and we tried to know

their reason for cancellation of tour. There was also daily reporting to

accounting department about day to day expenses. There were lot of online

booking done by students after their exams were over in month of March. So I

gave information about the group tours and transportation facilities which will

be provided to them by Valley of Gods Tour and Travels.

During my last week I spent most of my time in escorting tourists to their

hotels and accompanying them to local tourist destinations around Manali

which helped me in getting to know about their experiences during their time

with Valley of Gods Tour and Travels.

CHAPTER-10CONCLUSIONTourism industry is essentially different from other industries as practical

knowledge plays an important role to succeed in various aspects of tourism such

as operations, sales, accounting etc. Knowledge which we get from our books is

a small part of our learning and complete knowledge and experience can only

be achieved by working in field. As we know to succeed in any field or activity

in life we need proper training and management to succeed. With that in mind I

chose to do my on the job training from Valley of Gods Tour and Travels,

Manali. With all the up’s and down’s which I faced during my job training I am

sure I have more knowledge and respect not only towards my company and all

the people who helped me while completing my 2 months job training but also

towards the tourism industry as whole .

Being a student of tourism it essential to be familiar with all the different

aspects of tourism industry and its working. Training helps us in making

decisions and giving information to the tourists depending upon the taste of

tourists, budget, interest and availability. This helps us in creating better

understanding of tourists and fulfilling their needs and demands creating a good

relationship between the company we are representing and tourists.

Need of professional and well trained persons in tourism industry is increasing

day by day and this need can only be fulfilled with the help of these type of job

training which makes us aware about the tourism industry. The work done by

me while working in Valley of Gods Tour and Travels has proved to be a good

learning curve for me in field of tourism industry. Even though I had to face lot

of difficulties in the beginning of my job training but soon I saw myself getting

adjusted to the need and demands of tourism industry will the help of all the

staff at Valley of Gods Tour and Travels. They always showed tremendous

amount of support and interest in teaching me and keeping my interest always

high. The work which I did such has hotel and bus reservations, coordinating

and communicating with local agents , guides and personnel in transportation

wing has helped in better understanding of needs and demands of a tourists and

necessary skills and traits required to fulfil those needs.

Through all the hardships which I faced during my training I acquired both

general skills that they can transfer from one job to another and specific skills

that are unique to a particular job in a travel agency. This training has helped me

in various ways and has done great in boosting my confidence and also inclined

me to pursue a career in the field of tourism.

With all the experience I had during my job training I look forward to work

more efficiently and serving the people as part of tourist industry prove myself

as an efficient worker, cooperative subordinate and motivated professional.

Being my first experience as trainee in tourism industry I believe that it was just

a small and important step in achieving further success in my future.
