Motivation and Creativity Goes a Long Way
PROMOTE YOUR
ORGANIZATION IN THE
COMMUNITY
Attend charitable events your organization sponsors.
Join a committee or find another way to help out.
Make sure you chat briefly with the CEO and if you
can get a picture in the newspaper with him.
VOLUNTEER
Offer to help out another
department (after your
own work is done of
course). You will learn
more about your
organization and you’ll
make internal contacts.
Educate Yourself The day you stop learning is the day you will find yourself
unemployed. Accept the fact that ongoing training in the form of
workshops, trades programs, university courses, computer learning
and more are a fact of work life. Ask your employer if the
organization offers an educational incentive. Even if they don’t your
training program is still tax deductible.
Internal NetworkingIntroduce yourself to people who work in other departments at the company picnic or Christmas dinner.
Swap business cards. Email now and then. Stay in the loop about developments in their department.
Network Outside of
Your Organization
When you attend conferences and training seminars where
other organizations are gathered make sure you introduce
yourself to the competition. Swap business cards and follow
up with an email the next day.
Head Hunters
Arrange an interview with a recruitment agency whether your
company appears that it’s about to downsize or not. Submit
your resume and tell them to contact you if something comes
up that might be a good fit. That way if you find yourself
downsized you won’t appear desperate when you give them
a call.
Assist your team by contacting
someone in your network who can
offer assistance when needed. Your
colleague might even end up with a
contract position thanks to you.
Make Yourself Visible
Stop hiding behind your
cubicle. Chat at the water
cooler. Go around and
introduce yourself to
people you don’t know.
Show some interest in
your colleagues.
Request an EvaluationAsk the boss to meet with you and discuss at least three goals
you’d like to pursue. Inquire as to a viable career path for you.
with the organization.
Promote Yourself
Write articles for the company newsletter. Organize
workshops. Book a motivational speaker. Think of
ways you can demonstrate your interest in moving
upward before a promotion becomes available.
Incorporate Outside Interests into Your
Job
Are you a basketball or softball coach? Your company doesn’t have a
team,? It does now! Organize a team of interested people and go up
against the competition. Don’t forget to bring business cards.
Attend Corporate Events
Yes they can be a snore but they’re vital. Try to
get the opportunity to introduce yourself to the
CEO. If you’re a great organizer offer to work with
the social activities team to put it all together.
