Unemployment isn’t easy for anyone, regard-less of their age. But unemployed men andwomen over 50 may find it especially difficultto find work.Whether it’s a byproduct of age-related dis-crimination or any of a host of additionalvariables, jobless older workers often struggleto find work. In a 2016 analysis of governmentfigures, the Schwartz Center for EconomicPolicy Analysis at the New School estimatedthat the jobless rate for workers 55 and olderin August of 2016, six years after the GreatRecession, was nearly 9 percent. At the time, the national jobless rate hovered around 5 per-cent.Unemployed men and women over 50 who arestruggling to find work can consider the fol-lowing strategies as they look to rejoin theworkforce.• Revisit your résumé. Unemployed men andwomen over 50 have no doubt updated theirrésumés to reflect their most recent profession-al experience. But they may need to trim some
of the fat in regard to their work life 10 ormore years ago. Today’s hiring managers mayonly be concerned with recent experience thatillustrates skillsets that are relevant to today’sjobs. Men and women over 50 may considertheir experience from 20 years ago invaluable, but if that experience does not meet the specificneeds of the jobs they’re now seeking, then theyshould remove it from their résumés so hiringmanagers can quickly access the more relevantinformation from their work histories.• Embrace 21st century job hunting. Findinga job in the second decade of the 21st centuryis unlike job hunting in decades prior, andwholly different from how men and womenover 50 looked for jobs upon beginning theirprofessional lives. Networking can mean thedifference between unemployment and land-ing a job. Go to job fairs attended by hiringmanagers and join professional organizationsthat host events where professionals in yourfield can gather.• Turn your age into a positive. Men and wom-
en over 50 should accept the likelihood thattheir new managers and/or hiring managerswill be younger than them. When interview-ing for a job, men and women over 50 shouldmake an effort to showcase their enthusiasmabout working with and learning from young-er colleagues, while also noting their desire tocommit long-term to a company. Some hir-ing managers may surprise older applicants, viewing them as potentially more reliable thanyounger workers simply looking to gain someexperience in a particular industry beforemoving on to the next opportunity.• Make use of your existing down time. Anoth-er strategy unemployed men and women over50 can try as they look for work is to makebetter use of their existing downtime. Enroll-ing in online courses can give prospective em-ployers the impression that applicants over 50are both tech-savvy and willing to learn newthings. Each of those things can help men andwomen over 50 overcome any unjustified, tech-related stigmas that hiring managers may at-
tach to older job candidates.Finding work after 50 is not always easy, andjob seekers may need to adjust their approachbefore they can get back in the workforce.
