JOB DESIGN AS A STRATEGY FOR MOTIVATING EMPLOYEES ON CONSTRUCTION SITES0213080001DGBACKGROUNDMotivation, as a word is derived from the Latin word movere, meaning to move can be defined as the influences that account for the initiation, direction, intensity, and persistence of behaviour (Robbins& Judge, 2013). Motivation has various sources (Cadagin, 1999) and types: intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Because of variety of factors construction site workers can be motivated in different ways. Motivating workers on site has various importance such as improving performance level of your workers on site (5 Importance of Motivate, 2015).One of the major factor that influence worker motivation is job design (Bauer et al, 2010). Job design can be defined as work arrangement or rearrangement aimed at reducing or over coming dissatisfaction and workers alienation arising from repetitive and mechanistic task.

Motivating workers is a vital instrument to increase productivity at work. Employers of the construction site have adopted different strategies to motivate their workers such as: the skilled and unskilled labourers, in other to increase output. The result however always seems to be negative (Taylor 2010). There is therefore the need to find other alternative ways of motivating workers on construction site. Job design as a different strategy with major influence over worker motivation (Bauer et al 2010).STATEMENT OF PROBLEMAIMS AND OBJECTIVES

AIMThe aim of this study is to explore the ways in which job design can be used as a strategy for motivating workers on construction site.OBJECTIVES 1.To identify the various ways jobs are designed on construction sites.2.To find out if the design of jobs for construction workers show job characteristics model.3.Find out the strategies for worker motivation on construction site. RELEVANCE OF THE STUDYThe significance of this study will help the construction industries increase productivity, without given monetary or incentives rewards to their workers. Through this strategy the workers will also develop greater satisfaction from sense of personal achievement in meeting the challenge and responsibility of ones work.LITERATURE REVIEW

This chapter review works by other authors relevant to this study. Reviewed works include web articles, journals, books and government periodicals. The review was carried out along the objectives of the study. Thus, the review discusses types of motivation, motivation in the construction industry and job design of construction work.Finally, the study identified the variables of the study.RESEARCH VARIABLES

METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION

Data will be collected from both primary and secondary sources. The researcher will undertake the data collected exercise. The questionnaires will be handed over to the respondents and they will be given at least one week to fill the instrument.RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The study will dwell in the administration of questionnaire as the data collection instrument for skilled and unskilled labors. The questionnaires will looked at job design as a strategy for motivating workers on construction site and its importance to the industry. Both open-ended and closed-ended questions.SAMPLE AND SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

Simple random sampling will be carried out for the skilled labors at the site whiles purposive sampling will be used to select unskilled labors for each construction site.METHOD OF DATA PRESENTATION AND ANALYSISThe data will first be edited and coded to ease data entries. The cording will be the numerical values to the checked responses to hasten data entries. The data will be analyzed using SPSS (statistical product and services solutions) vision 16.
