Broadlands AcademyBroadlands Academy opened on 1 December 2012 and is sponsored by the Academies Enterprise Trust.  Our Principal, Dean Anderson, took up post on 1 January 2013.  Previous to becoming an Academy, Broadlands has served the families of Keynsham and South Bristol in the West of England since 1935.

We are a popular, mixed, fully inclusive comprehensive school taking children from ages 11 to 16 and remain one of the best choices for learning in the area.  We aim to value, develop and nurture each student who attends our Academy: raise their aspirations, broaden their horizons and promote a life-long love of learning.

In 2013, Broadlands Academy achieved the best examination results in the history of the school:

5A*-C including English and Maths = 60% 5A*-C = 82% 2A*-C in Science = 82% A*-C in English = 74% A*-C in Maths = 66%

These results smashed the previous best of 50% 5A*-C E&M and have enabled more students than ever to go on to study the courses they have chosen post 16.

The Academy is situated in extensive grounds and is located between Bath and Bristol.  The Academy benefits from a number of links with the local community and has an excellent reputation.  Broadlands will expand over the coming years to develop post 16 learning on site.

Through our actions and behaviours we will strive to develop young people who:

respect themselves and the community (people, property and the environment); are polite, calm, caring, honest, trustworthy and helpful; are responsible, independent and supportive of each other; are tolerant, open minded and not prejudiced; are determined and have a strong work ethic; are thoughtful and have the ability to listen; have good communication skills; offer themselves as good role models for younger students; can demonstrate strong self-belief and confidence and have high aspirations; can work together in groups and, as they develop, can begin to lead others.

Broadlands Academy teaches the National Curriculum at Key Stages 3 (Years 7 to 8) and 4 (Years 9, 10 and 11). Post 16, many of our students go on to study A/AS Levels at the nearby St Brendan´s Sixth Form College or other local providers.

A commitment to training and personal development

As we head further into the 21st century and all schools and academies come to terms with the ever changing face of the workforce, leadership and management of professional development is at the very top of the AET’s agenda. We firmly believe that personal and professional growths are key factors in staff’s perception of their worth to an organisation and consequently in how much additional effort they are prepared to put into that organisation.

The aim, therefore, of the team leading CPD across the AET is to facilitate the design, co-ordination and monitoring of coherent and effective development activities and training programmes that address the challenges and barriers facing each academy and embed training and development as the central component of workforce development and school improvement.

Our vision for our academies is to develop a learning-centred culture with the entire school workforce, including both teachers and educational support staff, giving the same attention to the design, delivery and monitoring of their professional development as is given to the teaching and learning of students. Indeed, for our academies to continue to improve, teachers and other adults need to feel that their learning and development is just as important as the students’.
