JOB CLUB NEW JOB OPPORTUNITIES

1 December 2011

Page 2: Job Club Career Opportubties 1dec2011

Show me two job hunters. Both are essentially the same age. Both have the same background. Both have the same intelligence and history. Both have been out of work for the same amount of time. It’s been many months, now. Both are struggling, financially.

They get by on what little they’ve saved, what occasionally they can sell, plus help from family and friends, the occasional brief odd job, that sort of thing. But there the similarities end.

The one is quietly smoldering with anger, barely suppressed. He is mad at the universe, and in no particular order, his former employer, his former co-workers, the government, his profession, his college, friends, and God.

He is very quiet, doesn’t talk much, and when he does talk, it is to complain about how his life has turned out. He is sullen, gloomy about his future, feels he has been declared disposable, and that his life as he knew it is essentially over.

The other is just as depressed about how his life has turned out, but he wakes up each morning glad to see the sun, puts on beautiful music, walks a great deal, counts his blessings, is in a job-support group, focuses on other people’s troubles, not just his own, is a great listener, spends each new day trying to be a better person than he was the day before, remains active in his job hunt, tries to learn or study something new each day, essentially sees life as an adventure, and is willing to wait patiently for the next chapter to unfold.

Yes, show me two job hunters, and I will show you how important attitude is. Which one of those two do you think is more likely to find a job, first?

In whatever circumstances we may find ourselves in life, attitude is everything. When we are out of work, and desperately trying to survive, we don’t just need to master more advanced job hunting techniques, but we must also pay strict attention to our attitudes.

The Three Attitudes Necessary for SurvivalFIRST IMPORTANT ATTITUDE FOR SURVIVAL WHILE OUT OF WORKSECOND IMPORTANT ATTITUDE FOR SURVIVAL WHILE JOB HUNTINGTHIRD IMPORTANT ATTITUDE FOR SURVIVAL WHILE JOBHUNTING

Page 3: Job Club Career Opportubties 1dec2011

Job hunting most always involves competing with others for the job, sad to say, and it is often our attitude that gives us the advantage. Here are three attitudes to adopt.

FIRST IMPORTANT ATTITUDE: FOR SURVIVAL WHILE OUT OF WORKSome years ago, when I was doing a lot of counseling, not just about careers, a friend of mine asked me if I would be willing to see someone he knew. Her name was Mary. She had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, or MS. She had been to a wide range of medical specialists: neurologist, psychologist, internist, you name it.

They all had declared there was nothing they could do to help her with the disease. My friend said, “Would you see her?” “Sure,” I said, “but I’m not sure there’s anything I can do.”

The next day my friend brought her over. She walked very stiffly up the front sidewalk, came in, sat down, and after exchanging a few pleasantries, I got down to business. “Mary,” I said, “what is multiple sclerosis?” “I don’t know,” she said, in a dull voice. “Well, then,” I said, “that makes us even; because I don’t know, either.

But here’s what I propose. I’m sure that a huge proportion of whatever MS is is out of your control. There’s nothing you can do about it. But that proportion can’t be 100 percent.

There’s got to be some proportion—let’s say it’s even just 2 percent—that is within your control. We could work on that. Do you want to begin that journey?” She said yes.

Over the next few weeks she improved, and finally was free of all symptoms (typical of the disease, for a spell, but this lasted for a very long time), and now—free of all stiffness—she became a model on 57th Street in New York City.

This story about Mary illustrates an important attitude: in any situation we may ever find ourselves, no matter how much we feel we are at the mercy of vast immutable forces that are totally beyond our control, we can always find something that is within our control, however small, and work on that.

Sometimes that may only change a little; sometimes it may change a lot. You just never know. But what we do know is that by working on even that 2 percent, it saves us from a feeling of complete powerlessness.

This certainly applies to any time we are unemployed, particularly if it drags on and on. To paraphrase the above, addressing it to job hunters: I’m sure that a huge proportion of the situation you are facing is out of your control.

There’s nothing you can do about it. But that proportion can’t be 100 percent.

Page 4: Job Club Career Opportubties 1dec2011

There’s got to be some proportion—let’s say it’s even just 2 percent—that is within your control. You can work on that. Who knows what a difference that may make! So this brings us to our First Important Attitude for Survival While Out of Work: While you are out of work, and feel you are up against large forces that you are powerless to change, determine to find something that is within your power to change, even if it’s just 5 percent or only 2 percent of the total; find it, and throw your energies into it. Some examples of what is within your control when you’re out of work: getting more sleep; drinking more water (we almost always need more water than we think we do, but that’s water, not just fluids); walking more; reading the book 14,000 Things to Be Happy About; doing more studying about advanced job-survival skills (reading this manual, more than once); getting into a supportive community with other job hunters, if you haven’t already; doing a detailed inventory of yourself while learning to become more observant of the world around you; listening harder to other people; and talking more to successful job hunters, to quiz them about what they did, step by step, to find work.

“If you are going through hell, keep going.” - Winston Churchill (1874–1965)

SECOND IMPORTANT ATTITUDE: FOR SURVIVAL WHILE JOB HUNTING When we are unemployed during hard times, and for long times, that’s an important thought to remember.

Some people think that any suggestion that there may be something that a Jobhunter is doing wrong, is essentially “blaming the victim” for the situation they are in.

This is nuts. Self-introspection is the way to improve any company, any marriage, and any nation. And any job-hunt. Looking forward and not backward, asking, “Is there something I could be doing better?” is often the pathway to saving that company, marriage, nation, and job-hunt! When unemployment is dragging on and on, everything should be on the table for examination. We need to question all assumptions.

Assume we are in a new world. Rethink all our strategies. Revisit everything we think we know for sure, and ask if in fact things have changed.

Think whether there is something new we need to learn, remembering always that before we can learn we sometimes need to unlearn (some things). So this brings us to our Second Important Attitude for Survival While out of Work: We need to assume that nothing that worked before will necessarily work now.

Page 5: Job Club Career Opportubties 1dec2011

We need to reexamine every job hunting method there is (next chapter), and reconsider whether there is a better way that we could be going about this. In whatever circumstances we may find ourselves in life, attitude is everything. We must never shrink from doing the hard work of rethinking our whole strategy.

THIRD IMPORTANT ATTITUDE FOR SURVIVAL WHILE JOBHUNTING I recall a talk I heard many years ago, that made a deep, lasting impression on me. It was a doctor speaking; a doctor turned researcher, as it happened. He was reporting on a study that some colleagues had made of healing, at the hospital where he worked in New York City.

They had long known that some people healed faster than others, but now they wanted to find out why. So, as I recall, they searched through their records of recent patients to find matched pairs: essentially two people of the same age, with the same background, the same basic health record, who had undergone the same procedure or operation in that hospital. One member of each pair healed faster than the other, often by far.

The doctors therefore questioned each pair at length to find out what was different about the person who healed faster. The common explanations that would occur to any thoughtful layperson proved to have no correlation with the rate of healing.

Was the one who healed faster more optimistic than the other?

No. Well, then, was it their habits: eating, sleeping, and exercising? No. Was it their family history? No. Was it their status as single or married? No. Was it a belief in God? No. Well, then, what was it?

It turned out that those who healed faster believed that everything that happened to them had meaning, even if they didn’t know what the meaning was, at the time.

They believed that nothing meaningless ever happened to them. The ones who healed slowly did not believe this. This was independent of whether they believed in God or not. The reason this talk made such an impression on me was because it demonstrated that what we are thinking actually can influence the body. It seemed to follow that it could influence our minds and spirits also. I was also struck by a part of his report that said, “… even if they didn’t know what the meaning was.”

Apparently, just to believe that nothing about our life is meaningless is a powerful idea. So, here we have it:

Page 6: Job Club Career Opportubties 1dec2011

Third Important Attitude for Survival While out of Work: We need to assume that nothing that happens to us is just senseless and meaningless, including being out of work for a long time. In the context of our total life, it will eventually turn out to have meaning, even if that meaning is the forging of our soul to make it stronger and more compassionate toward the needs of others worse off than we are.

Interesting!

In whatever circumstances we may find ourselves in life, attitude is everything. When we are out of work, we must never shrink from doing the hard work of rethinking our whole strategy.

Local job search is critical to your job search because many employers WILL REJECT applications from most of the people who live over ten miles away for the job…five miles if you tell them you have no/limited transportation or more than 30 minutes away from the job site by bus.

This is due to the fact that 80% of a decision to hire or not hire is based upon the factor(s) of dependability and flexibility. If you live within this range and you start you conversation with the phrase: “You know, I just live down the street…” you have overcome 80% and if you are excited about the job; you have a handle on the other 20%...That usually means: “YOU ARE HIRED!”

Consider that when you see an advertisement; you are one of 500+ people who see that advertisement. At that point the footrace is on and your odds of getting this job are running at 500 to 1. Not good odds…right?Consider that 97% of all companies in Arizona employ less than ten employees.Consider that many of these companies cannot afford to $250-300 advertisements or the 500 resumes that they will get from the cheap Craig List’s Advertisement. So this means that there are many companies who will run an advertisement ONLY as a last resort and ONLY if they cannot find someone by letting their current employees refer people, from the sign in the window or other cheaper means of searching. So this means that there are many companies that have current unadvertised openings and that very few (if any of those 500 people from above) job seekers know anything about these jobs or companies.

LOCAL JOB SEARCH

Page 44: Job Club Career Opportubties 1dec2011

WHAT IF we could show you a way to find these companies and to find all of these companies that are within that 5-10 mile range, broken down by occupation or industry?WHAT WOULD access to this great source of information give to you in terms of an advantage over those 500 other job seekers…?WHAT IF you had an actual script to help you start a conversation with any of these employers?

WHAT WOULD THIS MEAN TO YOUR JOB SEARCH?

Homeless man's good deed was a lifetime in the makingReturning lost bag of money was only first step

About a year ago, Dave Tally returned a sack full of cash to its rightful owner. It wasn't an easy decision for a 49-year-old man who had been living on the streets for six years. But Tally returned the $3,300. He decided it was the right thing to do.the year since then, Tally's entire life has changed.People familiar with how far Tally has come since returning the money think his story has all the makings of a Hollywood feel-good flick -- a man is down on his luck, and one right choice is all it takes to turn his life around. But Tally's story is not that simple. Giving back the money was only one step. The best way to understand how Tally's single good deed sparked a series of life-changing moments is to let him tell it.The choice A year ago, Tally was homeless. Most nights, he slept on a mat at a church-based homeless shelter run by Tempe Community Action Agency.During the day, with nowhere else to go, he walked the streets. That is where he found a backpack full of cash last November. The $3,300 might as well have been $1 million as far as Tally was concerned. He thought about the things he could pay for: a cheap apartment, a bike. The wish list was not hard to make for a man who had spent the previous six years homeless. But keeping the cash, Tally explained, "just didn't feel right."He had found the backpack at a Tempe light-rail station. He knew it likely belonged to a college kid."I just couldn't do it," he said.Stephen Sparks, director of operations at Tempe Community Action Agency, said that the caseworkers at Interfaith Homeless Emergency Lodging Program already had seen Tally's potential when he showed up for a bed each night in a shelter that required sobriety.I-HELP coordinators had selected Tally as one of the program's night monitors. That responsibility often earned him a spot in the shelter.Tally was asked to encourage people to respect the program's rules. Although many shelters struggle with violence and crime, I-HELP rarely has such troubles."The program works because people like Dave who are homeless ... don't want to do anything to hurt the people from the church who are kind enough to let them sleep there," Sparks said.At the time, Tally was working on a step-by-step recovery program. Drugs, alcohol and a string of bad decisions had dogged him for much of his life. He had lost his driver's license when he got a DUI, lost his job, and bit by bit his life unraveled.Tally had developed a plan with an agency caseworker to reach his goals.

Page 48: Job Club Career Opportubties 1dec2011

To get a job, he needed to get his driver's license reinstated. He had to pay fines related to that crime and other traffic violations. He had to get rid of some bad debt.A bag full of money would have been an easy fix.But to meet any one of those goals, he knew he would have to keep attending his recovery meetings.Sparks said his staff believed in Tally. "He was so committed to his sobriety," he said.Tally says it's hard to have faith in yourself when you've gone so far as to dig through the trash for a meal and been so low that you've hurt the people who love you most.Struggling with what to do with the money he had found, Tally confided in Sam Sumner, his mentor at I-HELP. Sumner told Tally it was up to him to make a decision about whether to keep it.Tally says the choice came down to not being able to take something he didn't earn from someone who might need it.There was no ID in the backpack, but Sumner found a flash drive and helped Tally track down the owner. The cash belonged to Bryan Belanger, an ASU student who, distracted in a conversation on his cellphone, forgot his bag. Belanger had planned to use the money to buy a car to replace one wrecked in a recent accident.Meeting Belanger and hearing the student thank and praise him for his honesty and kindness made Tally feel good about himself, he says. He hadn't had that feeling in awhile.Tally says it was more than enough thanks for a man who was used to people on the streets treating him like he was invisible. But what happened next was more than Tally ever expected. The spotlight Tally's good deed sparked an international outpouring of goodwill. People wanted to help him get off the streets. An Arizona Republic story about his act of kindness went national. He was interviewed by CNN, People magazine and ABC's Diane Sawyer. A few foreign-news outlets picked up the story. And Maxwell House coffee put him in a 30-second ad as part of a marketing campaign on the power of optimism.Sparks said agency workers worried that the spotlight might be too much for Tally."We told him anytime he wanted to take a break he could," he said. But Tally said he wanted to use his 15 minutes of fame to promote the non-profit that had given him a meal and place to sleep at night.Tally's story hit a chord with viewers. Donations started pouring in for him and for I-HELP.At final count, donations for Tally reached $10,000. A lawyer volunteered to help him fix his legal record so he could get his driver's license back. A dentist fixed his teeth. It took about six months, but Tally's lawyer arranged for him to clean up his driving record and get his license back by paying restitution and doing community service.Tally used his donation fund to pay fines. He saved most of the rest for a home.

Page 49: Job Club Career Opportubties 1dec2011

"A lot of people in Dave's shoes would have taken that money and spent it. It's sad to say, but probably one year later we'd see them back in our shelter," Sparks said. "Not Dave. He kept seeing his caseworker. He stayed with his goals."Sitting in the Tempe Escalante Community Garden earlier this month, Tally shook his head when he thought about his friends at the non-profit and the people who were willing to help a complete stranger. He thinks his commitment pales in comparison."I just want to thank everyone who was willing to help give me a second chance in life," he said. The media attention prompted job offers from around the nation. With more than three times the amount of money he had returned in his pocket, it would have been so easy for Tally to start over miles away from the Valley where he had made so many mistakes. But Tally's second chance would end up being right in front of him.The futureTally gets sad when he thinks about a homeless man whose crooning earned him national fame about the same time last year that Tally was in the news."We all know how that went bad," he said, referring to the man's relapse with substance abuse.Tally knows how easily life can spiral out of control when it comes to the disease of addiction."I didn't want to waste all the good that people had done for me," he said.Even though he had enough money to move out of the shelter right away last year, Tally asked to keep volunteering and sleeping there.Last January, Tally moved into his own apartment. He didn't want to live in a big, fancy apartment because he worried about the temptations that might come with that lifestyle.Tally chose a no-frills, five-unit complex across the street from a church where he had slept when he was homeless. He said he wanted "a reminder of where I've been and where I'm not going back again."Seeing Tally's commitment to getting his life in order, the non-profit offered him an internship at a Tempe community garden it was starting to help fill the charity's food pantry with fresh vegetables and fruits. Before Tally was homeless, he had worked as a landscape supervisor and gardener."Dave had the background, and we needed someone who understood what we were trying to do," Sparks said.Sparks offered Tally a six-month internship with the opportunity for a full-time job as the manager of the community garden depending on his performance. In June, Sparks called Tally into his office for a review."I messed with him a little, but I knew he was getting the job," Sparks said. "He'd worked so hard."Tally says that he now has his dream career."I'm blessed," he said, adding that he hopes to return to school to further his horticulture studies. He is in the garden almost every day planting, digging and cultivating food that is distributed to community volunteers and to the food pantry.

Page 50: Job Club Career Opportubties 1dec2011

"I just don't want anybody to have to take something out of the garbage to eat," Tally said, explaining why he spends so much time in the garden.Recently, he started managing an internship program that allows people who are homeless to volunteer in the garden. He doesn't preach to anyone, though."I let them know that when they're ready to make changes, it's possible," he said."I learned in my recovery program not to judge other people. I guess all I can say is that if I hadn't been at that point ... where I was working the program ... I wouldn't have been at the point to make changes in my life."Last week, Tally boarded a plane to California to visit his parents for Thanksgiving."My mom bought about 50 copies of the People magazine I was in," Tally said with a big smile.Seeing his parents' pride made it easier for Tally to believe in himself again. In the spring, when Tally's license was reinstated, he bought a motorcycle. He follows a strict budget to maintain his simple lifestyle."My bills, they get priority. Nothing else gets done until they get paid," he said. "It's a great feeling to be able to put back into society after being a person who was dependent on society for so long."At the end of a day's work, Tally gets to go home."The key that opens my door is a privilege, and I have to earn it."==========================================================================

The inaugural PHX Urban Expo presented by Greater Phoenix Urban League will bring an exciting end to 2011. Last year the longstanding organization celebrated 65 years of excellence. The event was not only a first for Greater Phoenix Urban League but it was the first of its kind for the Greater Phoenix metropolitan area.

This year, the Expo will be December 2-3 in the heart of downtown at the Phoenix Convention Center. It's free and open to the public – bringing together families, seniors and youth with businesses interested in building a better Arizona through cultural connections.

The Expo is the result of the collaborative efforts of individuals and organizations across our great state. With a focus on business, housing, career, finances and health, the Expo will provide the chance for self enhancement and engagement. Local businesses and individuals will have the opportunity to showcase products and services to thousands of Phoenix residents over two days.

The community will be able to participate in various activities leading up to and during the Expo. These include:
